Chapter 13 - The Names Restored

Three weeks later, the city courthouse steps filled with families carrying photographs of the thirteen dead patients.
The federal indictment named Adrian Vale, Daniel Carter, Evelyn Shaw, six Halcyon executives, two hospital administrators, and three contractors. Charges included attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud, obstruction, unlawful human experimentation, and conspiracy.
The newspapers called it the Blue Hand Scandal. Emily refused every interview that reduced the victims to a dramatic nickname. She met their families privately and showed them the original medical reports.
One by one, the lies on their death certificates were corrected.
Sarah testified before the medical board. The hospital apologized for ignoring her warning in Noah's case and offered her a leadership position. She declined the title but accepted funding for an independent diagnostic safety unit run with public oversight.
Marcus became its first operations director.
Lily spent weeks relearning ordinary freedom: choosing when to sleep, walking through an unlocked door, standing beneath open sky. Emily visited every afternoon while her own arm healed. The sisters spoke about lost time only when they were strong enough. Sometimes they sat without speaking at all.
Noah reunited with his mother in a guarded rehabilitation center. Sarah watched from the hall as the woman touched her son's face, afraid he might vanish if she embraced him too quickly.
Adrian attempted to negotiate. Prosecutors refused. Daniel accepted a plea requiring full testimony, but the evidence ensured he would spend decades in prison.
Evelyn Shaw disappeared before agents reached her estate.
Her private aircraft was found empty in Montreal. Her accounts had been drained through transactions authorized months earlier. It appeared she had prepared to abandon everyone, including Adrian.
Emily returned once to the house she had shared with Daniel. The police had released it after their search. Flowers he bought her still stood dried in a vase. Their wedding photograph rested above the fireplace.
She removed the photograph, carried it to the kitchen, and placed it facedown in the trash.
She did not burn the house or smash the glass. Daniel had already taken enough from her. She would not give him a final scene inside her mind.
In the study, she found the old tablet she had used after waking in the cast. Its battery was dead. Beneath it lay the receipt that first proved Daniel bought the infusion equipment.
Emily gave it to Ortiz.
"Keep it," the detective said. "The digital record is stronger."
"No. I want it in the case. I want a jury to see how ordinary evil looks when it goes shopping."
Before leaving, Emily opened every curtain in the house.
Outside, reporters waited beyond the gate, but she exited through the front door. Lily stood beside Sarah and Marcus on the sidewalk.
For the first time since the cast appeared, Emily did not feel watched.
Then Marcus's phone chimed.
