THE CAMERA KEPT RECORDING

Rosa’s real name was Rosalía Varela.

She had been Elena’s personal assistant, closest friend, and the final person known to have spoken to her before the car crash that supposedly ended her life.

According to the family records, Rosalía had died in the same accident.

“I was not in the car,” she explained.

The family gathered in Octavio’s private study while Bruno was held in a locked guest room under Daniel’s supervision.

“I was meant to travel with Elena that night,” Rosa continued. “She told me to remain at the estate and copy several files. Twenty minutes later, someone entered the archive.”

“Bruno?” Camila asked.

“No. Bruno was a junior guard then. He was paid to erase the gate recording afterward.”

“Who entered the archive?”

Rosa looked toward Teresa.

“Esteban Rivas.”

Teresa’s face tightened.

“That is impossible.”

“I watched him remove documents from Elena’s cabinet.”

“Why didn’t you testify?”

“Because the police report declared me dead before I could reach the station.”

Octavio sat heavily behind his desk.

“You disappeared.”

“I survived because Elena created a second identity for me. She knew someone inside the family’s legal office was preparing to take control of the company.”

Daniel placed the photograph of Rafael on the desk.

“Did you know about the olive building?”

“I began monitoring it 3 months ago. Deliveries were arriving at night.”

“Why didn’t you rescue him?”

“I did not know Rafael was inside.”

Mariela stepped forward.

“You watched people enter and did nothing?”

“I had no proof of who they were holding. And if I moved too soon, I would lose the only path to the person giving the orders.”

Camila studied her.

“You sent the invitation.”

“Yes.”

“You entered our apartment building.”

“Yes.”

“You warned us about the truck.”

“Yes.”

“Then why tell me not to let Sofia touch it?”

“Because Esteban had discovered the memory compartment.”

Daniel looked toward the red truck resting on a side table.

“What did he do to it?”

“He ordered Bruno to replace the rear axle with one containing a tracking sensor. The device would activate when the truck moved beyond the estate boundary.”

“Why?”

“To prove Camila had removed trust property from the house,” Rosa said. “That accusation could delay the transfer.”

Octavio’s face hardened.

“Why did you not tell us all of this immediately?”

“Because I did not know who was still loyal to Esteban.”

Her gaze moved around the room.

“That includes you.”

Octavio did not argue.

Daniel opened the compartment beneath the truck.

The memory card was gone. He had already secured it elsewhere. Behind the axle, he found a device smaller than a coin.

A green light blinked once.

“They know we opened it,” he said.

Mariela looked toward the window.

“Then they know I told you about Rafael.”

Her phone rang.

The screen displayed no number.

Daniel signaled for everyone to remain silent.

Mariela answered.

A distorted voice filled the room.

“You were given a simple task.”

Mariela’s lips trembled.

“I want to speak to my husband.”

“You will see him when Camila leaves the estate.”

“How do I know he is alive?”

A sound played through the phone.

Rafael’s voice.

“Mariela, don’t do what they say. The room is wired. They are listening to everything.”

A sharp noise interrupted him.

Then silence.

Mariela gripped the phone with both hands.

The distorted voice returned.

“Tomorrow at 4:10, place the coffee on the white table. At 4:12, put the truck beside Sofia. At 4:13, break the cup. At 4:14, force Camila through the front gate.”

“And if she refuses?”

The voice paused.

“Then the security system will create the emergency we prepared.”

The call ended.

Daniel turned toward Bruno’s access card.

“What kind of emergency can the security system create?”

Octavio answered quietly.

“It can lock every exterior door.”

Teresa looked toward him.

“And the gas suppression system?”

“The courtyard has no gas system.”

“The archive does.”
