Chapter 10 - the camera kept recording

The sound of breaking porcelain silenced the courtyard.
Sofia began to cry, startled by the noise. She was safely beyond the marked line, but none of the guests knew the incident had been staged.
Camila rushed toward her daughter.
“What did you do to my daughter?”
The words were part of the plan, yet the anger behind them was real.
For several seconds, Mariela forgot the prepared response.
Then her phone vibrated again.
SAY THE WORDS OR RAFAEL DISAPPEARS.
Mariela pointed toward Sofia.
“She touched Iker’s toy. It was only a joke!”
The guests began whispering.
Teresa rose exactly as Daniel had instructed.
“Take that child and leave our house.”
Her voice sounded so convincing that Camila almost believed the words came from years earlier.
Iker stepped forward.
“I gave her the truck.”
That was not part of the plan.
Mariela stared at him.
“Iker, go inside.”
“No.”
Esteban moved toward the security panel beside the gate.
Daniel watched from the edge of the courtyard.
At 4:14, Esteban entered a command.
The gate appeared to lock.
The official camera’s red light went dark.
The hidden camera remained active.
Camila lifted Sofia.
The little girl clung to her, still holding the red truck.
Her tears slowed as Camila whispered reassurance.
Then Daniel called.
“I recovered the footage,” he announced through Camila’s phone. “It shows someone told Mariela exactly what to do before the party.”
The performance changed.
Every guest turned toward Mariela.
She had expected to confess only after Rafael was found. Now Daniel was forcing the person behind the order to react.
Octavio looked down at his signet ring when Daniel mentioned the symbol on the recording.
Esteban looked toward the upstairs window.
The cameras rotated.
The courtyard doors slammed shut.
Guests shouted and moved toward the gate.
Esteban pressed another command.
Nothing happened.
His expression remained calm, but Daniel saw his right hand enter his jacket.
“Don’t,” Daniel said.
Esteban stopped.
“What are you accusing me of?”
“I haven’t accused you of anything.”
“You have spent 2 days interfering with private family business.”
“And you have spent 11 years trying to erase Elena’s recordings.”
Esteban smiled.
“That is an extraordinary claim.”
Rosa’s voice came from the balcony.
“Then perhaps you can explain this.”
She appeared above the courtyard holding a tablet.
The hidden camera footage played across the outdoor presentation screen.
It showed Mariela standing near the fountain that morning. A person wearing a dark coat approached her from behind. The person’s face was turned away, but a Valdés ring was visible on one hand.
The figure gave Mariela the cup and pointed toward the exact place Sofia would stand.
Esteban looked toward Octavio.
“It appears your own family arranged this.”
Daniel paused the footage.
“Watch the reflection.”
In the glass doors behind Mariela, the figure’s face was visible.
It was Bruno.
The guests erupted in shocked conversation.
Esteban relaxed slightly.
Daniel noticed.
“So Bruno planned everything?” Teresa asked.
“No,” Daniel replied. “Bruno delivered the instructions.”
He played the next section.
After Mariela left, Bruno remained beside the fountain and answered a call.
The recording captured only his side of the conversation.
“Yes, sir.”
“The documents are gone.”
“No, she doesn’t know.”
“I’ll lock the gate at 4:14.”
Then Bruno turned toward the hidden camera.
“I found Elena’s lens.”
He reached upward.
The image shook.
The screen became dark.
Esteban spread his hands.
“There is no evidence connecting that guard to me.”
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
A message from Rosa appeared.
THE OLIVE HOUSE IS OPEN.
Daniel looked toward Camila.
“We have a location for Rafael.”
Mariela moved toward the gate.
Esteban stepped into her path.
“You are not leaving.”
It was the first command he had spoken without pretending politeness.
Octavio heard it.
So did every guest.
Mariela stared at him.
“You know where my husband is.”
Esteban’s expression changed.
May you like
Only slightly.
But the hidden camera recorded it.
