THE CAMERA KEPT RECORDING / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - the rule no one mentioned

The family gathered in the library behind locked doors.

Teresa sat near the fireplace. Mariela stood beside the window with her arms folded. Octavio remained behind his desk while Daniel connected the memory card to an isolated laptop.

Sofia and Iker had been taken to the nursery with a trusted housekeeper named Rosa.

Camila had refused to continue the conversation until she personally checked the room’s cameras and locks.

Now, with Sofia safe for the moment, she faced her family.

“What does removed from the estate mean?”

Octavio looked at the trust document.

“It means you cannot be present on the property when the transfer is activated.”

“Why?”

“Elena designed the condition.”

“Why would my mother make the inheritance dependent on my location?”

“She wanted you to make a choice.”

“What choice?”

“To return voluntarily.”

Camila shook her head.

“That does not explain why someone wants me gone.”

Daniel enlarged the final page.

“There’s a secondary clause. If Camila is absent at 4:15, the controlling shares move into temporary administration.”

“Administered by whom?” Camila asked.

Mariela answered.

“The current family board.”

Camila turned toward her.

“And who controls the board?”

Mariela looked at Octavio.

Octavio did not respond.

Teresa finally spoke.

“Your grandfather controls 2 votes. I control 1. Mariela’s husband controls another through his company. The final vote belongs to the legal trustee.”

“So if I leave, all of you keep control.”

“For 5 years,” Daniel said. “Then the trust becomes permanent.”

Camila looked around the room.

“Every person here has a reason to force me out.”

Mariela laughed without humor.

“You think I arranged all of this because I want a vote?”

“You tried to hide the truck.”

“I wanted my son to keep the only thing in this house that made him happy.”

“It belonged to my mother.”

“Your mother gave gifts to everyone. You were not special simply because you were her daughter.”

Octavio struck his desk.

“Enough.”

Mariela’s anger shifted toward him.

“You protected Camila even after she humiliated this family. You paid for her education, her apartment, and her new life while telling the rest of us she was gone.”

Camila stared at her grandfather.

“You paid for my apartment?”

Octavio looked away.

Daniel understood first.

“The scholarship fund.”

Camila had believed an independent foundation paid her university fees. Later, when she struggled to afford rent, the same organization had offered her subsidized housing.

Octavio had been supporting her in secret.

“That does not excuse what you did,” Camila said.

“No,” he replied. “It does not.”

A knock came from the library door.

Rosa entered, holding an electronic tablet.

“I’m sorry, Señor Valdés. The security company sent a warning.”

Daniel took the tablet.

Someone had attempted to delete the courtyard camera archive at 3:12 that morning.

The request came from a device inside the estate.

A device registered to Teresa.

Everyone looked toward her.

Teresa’s face remained calm, but her fingers tightened around her handkerchief.

“My tablet was in my room.”

“Who has access to it?” Daniel asked.

“No one.”

“Does it require a password?”

“Yes.”

“Who knows it?”

Teresa hesitated.

“Mariela.”

Mariela stepped away from the window.

“You gave it to me last month.”

“For a charity account. Not for the security system.”

“I have never opened the security system.”

Daniel examined the access record.

“The password was entered correctly. Then someone tried to erase only the courtyard files between 3:00 and 5:00 tomorrow afternoon.”

“The party,” Camila said.

“And the transfer at 4:15,” Daniel added.

The planned incident was becoming clear.

Someone expected a confrontation in the courtyard. Someone wanted Camila to leave before the trust activated. Someone had prepared to erase the recording afterward.

But they had made a mistake.

The courtyard contained 2 systems.

The official Valdés cameras, which could be deleted from Teresa’s tablet.

And Elena’s hidden camera, which was connected to the underground room.

Octavio slowly rose.

“We cancel the party.”

“No,” Daniel said.

Camila looked at him.

“Why not?”

“Because the person behind this already knows we found the truck. If the party is canceled, they disappear.”

“You want us to pretend we know nothing.”

“I want them to believe their plan is still possible.”

Mariela shook her head.

“You are talking about using our children as bait.”

“No child will be placed in danger,” Daniel said. “Sofia and Iker stay with us at all times.”

Camila picked up the invitation.

The blue number on the back was no longer mysterious.

4:15.

It was not a warning about the trust.

It was an appointment.

Someone wanted them all in the courtyard when the family’s future changed.

Then Camila’s phone received a new message.

LET SOFIA TOUCH THE TRUCK TOMORROW, OR IKER WILL PAY FOR HER MOTHER’S DISOBEDIENCE.
