Chapter 13 - what the family owed

Esteban was taken from the estate in handcuffs.
Bruno was found 2 hours later at a private airfield, attempting to leave the country with forged documents and $180,000 in cash. The serial numbers matched money withdrawn from an account controlled by Esteban’s legal office.
The evidence was enough to hold them both.
It was not enough to explain everything.
Three days after the failed birthday celebration, the Valdés family gathered once more in the courtyard.
The broken cup had been removed, but a faint coffee stain remained between the stones.
Sofia sat on a blanket beside Iker, rolling the red truck back and forth. Daniel had permanently removed the tracking device and checked every part of the toy.
Rafael remained near his son. He looked exhausted, but he was free.
Mariela approached Camila.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
Camila watched the children.
“You frightened Sofia.”
“I know.”
“You spent years treating me like an enemy.”
“I know that too.”
“And when someone threatened your family, you allowed them to use my daughter.”
Mariela’s eyes filled with tears.
“The cup was cold. I measured the distance. I believed she would be safe.”
“You had no right to make that decision.”
“No.”
Camila finally looked at her.
“I understand why you were afraid. That does not erase what you did.”
Mariela nodded.
“What happens now?”
“You and Rafael take Iker somewhere safe. You speak to the investigators. You tell them everything.”
“And the company?”
“You lose your board position until the investigation is finished.”
Mariela accepted the decision without protest.
“What about us?”
Camila looked toward Sofia.
“That depends on whether your apology becomes a change or remains a sentence you said because you were caught.”
Mariela wiped her face.
“I’ll prove it.”
“I hope you do.”
Teresa waited beneath the balcony.
She appeared older than she had a week earlier. Without the certainty of authority, her perfect posture seemed fragile.
“I defended this family’s name while someone inside it destroyed our family,” she said.
Camila remained silent.
“I told myself sending you away was protection. The truth is that it was easier than admitting we had failed Elena.”
“You did fail her.”
“Yes.”
“And you failed me.”
Teresa nodded.
“I cannot repair 10 years.”
“No.”
“But I would like to stop adding to them.”
Sofia carried the red truck toward Teresa.
“Play?”
Teresa looked at Camila before accepting it.
Camila gave a small nod.
The elderly woman lowered herself carefully onto the edge of the blanket.
For the first time, Sofia did not hide from her.
Octavio watched from the courtyard table.
When Camila approached, he removed the Valdés signet ring from his hand.
“This belongs to the head of the family,” he said.
“I don’t want it.”
“It belongs to Sofia now.”
“She is 2. She doesn’t need a symbol that made adults believe they could control her future.”
Octavio closed his fingers around the ring.
“What do you want?”
“The truth about my mother.”
“I told you everything I know.”
“No. You told me everything you were ready to admit.”
He looked toward the olive orchard.
Camila placed the film photograph in front of him.
“Who is the woman with the red umbrella?”
“I don’t know.”
“Elena said she was family.”
“She may have meant the company.”
“That isn’t what she said.”
Octavio’s hand trembled against his walking stick.
Camila saw it.
“You do know something.”
“I know Elena feared someone who understood our family better than Esteban ever could.”
“Who?”
Octavio reached inside his jacket and removed a small brass key.
“This opens a deposit box registered under your mother’s name.”
“Where?”
“A bank in Geneva.”
Daniel, standing several feet away, turned toward them.
Octavio continued.
“Elena arranged for the box to become accessible after Sofia’s trust activated.”
“What is inside?”
“I have never opened it.”
“Then why are you afraid?”
“Because the bank contacted me this morning.”
Camila took the key.
May you like
“What did they say?”
“The box was opened 2 days before the party.”
