Chapter 12 - the lawyer’s final vote

They returned to the estate shortly before sunset.
When Mariela entered the courtyard beside Rafael, Iker ran toward them.
Rafael dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around his son.
Mariela knelt beside them.
For several moments, no one spoke.
Camila stood near the steps with Sofia in her arms. She watched Iker press his face against his father’s shoulder and felt some of the anger she carried toward Mariela loosen.
Not disappear.
But loosen.
Inside the library, Esteban remained seated beside the fireplace. His jacket had been removed, and his phone rested on the desk.
Octavio stood opposite him.
Rosa had found messages connecting Esteban’s legal office to Bruno’s private account, but the messages contained only codes. Esteban insisted they related to routine security payments.
Rafael entered with Daniel.
Esteban’s expression did not change.
“You appear healthier than expected,” he said.
“You kept me locked in a storage room.”
“I have no idea where you have been.”
“You forced me to confess to stealing company money.”
“Your signature appears on the confession.”
“Because Bruno threatened my son.”
Esteban looked toward Daniel.
“Do you have a recording of that threat?”
“Not yet.”
“Then you have an emotional story and no admissible proof.”
Daniel placed the photographic film on the desk.
Esteban looked at the final image.
The movement was almost invisible, but Rosa saw it.
“You know the woman under the umbrella,” she said.
“I know a photograph of a woman whose face cannot be seen.”
“Elena identified her as family.”
“Elena died before explaining anything.”
Camila stepped closer.
“You sound very certain she never explained.”
Esteban looked toward her.
“I handled the investigation after her accident.”
“You controlled the witnesses.”
“I protected the family from scandal.”
“You erased Rosalía from the report.”
“A clerical mistake.”
“You declared a living woman dead.”
“The coroner identified the passengers.”
“There was only 1 passenger,” Rosa said.
Silence filled the room.
Esteban turned toward her.
For the first time, the calmness left his face.
“You should not have returned.”
Rosa smiled faintly.
“The camera heard that.”
A red light blinked above the bookshelf.
Esteban looked toward it.
Daniel collected the phone from the desk.
“You also made another mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“You believed the trust transfer required Camila to remain on the property until 4:15.”
“That is what the document states.”
“The document on the memory card was incomplete.”
Octavio opened a hidden compartment in his desk.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
“Elena gave me this 11 years ago,” he said. “I was told to open it only if someone tried to remove Camila from the estate on the transfer date.”
Esteban stood.
Octavio broke the seal.
The page inside contained a final amendment.
If any person attempted through intimidation, deception, or manufactured danger to force Camila or Elena’s grandchild from the estate, the administrator responsible would immediately lose all voting authority.
Octavio read the final line aloud.
“The trustee’s vote shall pass temporarily to the person who documents the interference.”
Everyone looked toward the hidden camera.
Rosa had documented everything.
Esteban’s final vote was gone.
Camila remained on the property at 4:15.
The controlling shares had transferred to Sofia’s trust.
Esteban had lost before the cup touched the floor.
His eyes moved toward the library door.
Daniel stepped in front of it.
“The police are waiting outside.”
Esteban laughed quietly.
“You think a trust amendment proves kidnapping or murder?”
“No,” Daniel said. “Rafael’s testimony, Bruno’s payment records, your recorded threat to Rosa, and the location history from your phone will begin that process.”
“My phone never entered the olive building.”
“Correct.”
Daniel placed a second device on the desk.
“But the hidden phone sewn inside your jacket did.”
Esteban stared at it.
A siren sounded beyond the estate gate.
He slowly sat down.
“You have no idea what Elena discovered,” he said.
Camila looked at him.
“Then tell me.”
May you like
Esteban smiled.
“The moment you learn, you will wish I had succeeded.”
