Chapter 14 - the victory that came too easily

The new board meeting took place 1 week later.

For the first time in the company’s history, Octavio did not sit at the head of the table.

Camila did.

Sofia’s trust now owned 51 percent of Valdés Holdings. Until Sofia reached adulthood, Camila would act as guardian of the shares under independent court supervision.

Daniel sat behind her as an adviser. Rosa attended as temporary trustee. Teresa retained her single vote but agreed to an external audit of every family account.

Mariela’s position remained suspended.

Rafael was cleared of financial wrongdoing after investigators proved his signature had been copied onto several transfers. The missing money had passed through shell companies connected to Esteban and Bruno.

Some funds were recovered.

More had vanished.

Camila opened the meeting.

“This company spent years protecting its reputation instead of protecting people. That ends today.”

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

She announced a compensation fund for employees harmed by fraudulent dismissals, a complete review of the legal department, and independent security for all family trusts.

Then she placed Elena’s photograph on the table.

“My mother believed someone was using this company to hide crimes. We will find out who.”

The directors approved every motion.

Some did so because they agreed.

Others did so because Camila controlled the votes.

Afterward, Octavio waited in the empty boardroom.

“You handled them well,” he said.

“I learned from watching you.”

“I’m not sure that is a compliment.”

“It isn’t.”

He accepted the answer.

“The police searched Esteban’s office.”

“What did they find?”

“Copies of Elena’s travel records. Photographs of you during university. Daniel’s employment history. Sofia’s medical appointment schedule.”

Camila felt cold.

“He had been watching us for years.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“No one knows.”

“Esteban knows.”

“He has stopped speaking.”

Daniel entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was Esteban’s Valdés ring.

“It’s a replica,” he said. “Made 6 months before Elena’s accident.”

Octavio compared it with his own.

The copies were nearly identical.

“Who ordered it?” Camila asked.

“The jeweler died 4 years ago. His records were destroyed in a warehouse fire.”

“Another accident?”

“Probably not.”

Rosa arrived with the results of the courtyard recording analysis.

“The voice giving Bruno instructions was digitally altered,” she said. “But the software recovered a section beneath the distortion.”

She played the file.

A woman’s voice whispered, “The child must leave before the transfer.”

Camila listened again.

The voice felt familiar.

Not because she recognized the speaker.

Because she recognized the rhythm.

The careful pauses.

The soft breath before certain words.

Her mother had spoken that way.

“That isn’t possible,” Camila said.

Daniel stopped the recording.

“Voice similarities can happen.”

“That sounded like Elena.”

Octavio looked toward the windows.

“No.”

Camila turned to him.

“You heard it too.”

“Elena is dead.”

“Rosalía was declared dead, and she is standing beside us.”

“I saw Elena’s body.”

“Did you?”

Octavio’s face changed.

Teresa entered the room.

“He saw a sealed coffin.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Teresa continued before Octavio could stop her.

“The hospital said the injuries made identification difficult. Esteban recommended a closed funeral.”

Camila’s heartbeat quickened.

“Who identified her?”

“Esteban brought us her necklace and the ring she always wore.”

Daniel looked at Rosa.

“Were dental records used?”

“The report says they were,” Rosa replied. “But the dentist who signed the confirmation left the country the following week.”

Octavio sank into a chair.

“For 11 years, I believed I buried my daughter.”

Camila took the brass deposit box key from her pocket.

“The Geneva bank can tell us who opened the box.”

Daniel shook his head.

“They already replied. The person used Elena’s original biometric access.”

The room became silent.

Camila stared at the key.

A person matching her mother’s biological identity had opened the box.

May you like

Either Elena was alive.

Or someone had spent more than a decade preparing to become her.
