Chapter 15 - the woman beneath the red umbrella

The family left for Geneva the following morning.
Camila refused to bring Sofia into another unknown situation, so the little girl remained at a secure residence with Daniel’s sister, Rosa, and 2 independent protection officers.
Teresa stayed with her.
It was the first time Camila had trusted her grandmother with Sofia, even under supervision.
Octavio traveled with Camila and Daniel.
During the flight, he spoke very little. He held Elena’s photograph in his hands and stared through the window as though expecting the clouds to provide an answer.
The bank occupied a quiet stone building near the river.
A senior manager named Luc Moreau met them in a private conference room.
“You requested information concerning deposit box 417,” he said.
Camila placed the brass key on the table.
“It belonged to my mother.”
Moreau examined the key.
“The registered owner accessed the box 9 days ago.”
“Do you have surveillance footage?”
“The private vault corridor has cameras. However, the account includes an unusual confidentiality order.”
“Created by whom?”
“Elena Valdés.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“When?”
“Eleven years ago.”
Moreau opened a folder.
“The order states that footage may be released only after the trust connected to Elena’s first grandchild becomes active.”
“It is active,” Camila said.
The manager verified the documents.
Then he led them to a small viewing room.
The footage began at 10:42 in the morning.
A woman entered the vault corridor wearing a dark coat and a red scarf. Her hair was hidden beneath a hat. Large glasses covered part of her face.
She moved directly toward box 417.
The scanner accepted her fingerprint.
The retinal system accepted her eye.
She inserted a key identical to Camila’s and opened the box.
Octavio stood so quickly that his chair struck the wall.
“Elena.”
The woman’s posture, height, and movements matched Camila’s mother.
But the camera never captured her face clearly.
She removed a black folder and replaced it with a red envelope.
Before closing the box, she looked directly toward the camera.
Then she raised one finger to her lips.
Camila stopped breathing.
It was the same gesture Elena used when sharing secrets with her as a child.
“Play the exit footage,” Daniel said.
Moreau changed the camera angle.
The woman left the bank and entered a black vehicle. A red umbrella opened beside the passenger door.
Another person was waiting.
The face remained hidden.
Octavio placed one hand against the screen.
“My daughter is alive.”
“We still cannot prove it,” Daniel said.
“She used Elena’s biometric identity.”
“That proves the person had access to more than forged documents. It does not prove motive or loyalty.”
Camila looked toward the red envelope left in the deposit box.
“Open the vault.”
Moreau escorted them downstairs.
Box 417 contained only the envelope.
Camila broke the seal.
Inside was a memory card and a handwritten note.
Camila,
If you are reading this, Sofia’s trust survived the first attack.
Do not celebrate yet.
Esteban was never the person in control.
The person who ordered him to remove you has been inside the Valdés family longer than you have been alive.
Do not trust the confession.
Do not trust the photograph.
And most importantly, do not trust the woman who tells you she is your mother.
Camila read the final line twice.
Beneath it was a date.
Tomorrow.
And an address in Madrid.
Daniel inserted the memory card into an isolated reader.
The first file was the complete courtyard recording from the day of Octavio’s party.
It continued beyond the section they had already seen.
After Bruno discovered Elena’s hidden camera, he did not immediately disable it. He looked toward the upstairs window and asked, “What should I do if Esteban fails?”
A woman behind the curtain replied.
“Then we let Camila win.”
Bruno seemed confused.
“Why?”
“Because victory will make her open the Geneva box.”
The footage showed the woman stepping away from the window.
Only her hand remained visible.
She wore Teresa’s pearl bracelet.
Octavio stared at the screen.
“That bracelet was missing for 12 years.”
Camila’s phone began ringing.
The call came from Teresa.
Camila answered immediately.
“Is Sofia all right?”
For several seconds, there was no response.
Then Sofia’s small voice came through the phone.
“Mama?”
“I’m here, sweetheart.”
“Lady brought truck.”
Camila’s heart stopped.
“What lady?”
A woman spoke in the background.
Her voice was soft, careful, and painfully familiar.
“Hello, Camila.”
Octavio covered his mouth.
Camila gripped the phone.
“Who are you?”
The woman gave a quiet laugh.
“You still ask questions exactly the way you did when you were little.”
Camila looked at Daniel.
He was already tracing the call.
“Where is Sofia?”
“She is safe. I would never hurt my granddaughter.”
The line went silent for a moment.
Then the woman added, “But someone in that house will.”
A warning appeared on Daniel’s screen.
The call was not coming from Teresa’s residence.
It was coming from inside the Valdés estate.
The woman continued.
“Come to Madrid alone tomorrow. Bring the red truck and the Geneva recording.”
“How do I know you’re Elena?”
“You don’t.”
A door creaked through the phone.
Sofia whispered, “Mama, Grandma is sleeping.”
Camila’s blood turned cold.
“What did you do to Teresa?”
“Nothing permanent.”
Daniel wrote a message on his phone and held it up.
ROSA CANNOT FIND SOFIA.
Camila struggled to keep her voice steady.
“Let me speak to my daughter again.”
“You will see her after you hear the truth.”
The woman lowered her voice.
“Esteban wanted the company. Bruno wanted money. Mariela wanted her husband returned. Your grandparents wanted forgiveness.”
“What do you want?”
The woman paused.
“I want you to remember what happened the night you were sent away.”
“I remember.”
“No, Camila. You remember the story we placed in your mind.”
The call ended.
At the same instant, the security feed from Teresa’s residence appeared on Daniel’s laptop.
The nursery was empty.
The guards were unconscious but breathing.
Rosa stood in the hallway, staring at a message painted across the wall.
THE CAMERA KEPT RECORDING.
Beneath the words was the Valdés family crest.
But the olive branches around the tower had been reversed.
Octavio stepped back from the screen.
“That is not our crest.”
“Whose is it?” Camila asked.
He looked toward the memory card.
“The family Elena belonged to before she became a Valdés.”
Daniel’s tracing software found one final signal from Sofia’s cloth rabbit.
It was moving rapidly south.
Toward an airfield.
Camila ran from the vault with the red envelope in her hand.
As the bank doors opened, she saw a woman standing across the street beneath a red umbrella.
The woman lifted her face.
Camila saw her mother’s eyes.
Then a black car passed between them.
When it was gone, the woman had disappeared.
Camila’s phone vibrated with a new video.
Sofia sat safely in the back seat of a moving car, still clutching the red truck.
Beside her was the woman from the bank footage.
The woman looked into the camera.
“Come alone, Camila.”
She turned the phone toward the front seat.
For one brief second, the driver’s face appeared in the mirror.
Daniel froze the image.
Octavio whispered the man’s name.
Camila stared at him.
The driver was someone whose funeral they had attended years before.
Someone Elena had trusted with every family secret.
Someone whose name was written on the first page of Sofia’s trust.
Before Camila could ask how he was alive, another message arrived.

It contained only 6 words.
MADRID IS NOT WHERE WE ARE GOING.
