Chapter 34 - The Sentences

The legal cases did not end dramatically.

They ended slowly.

With hearings.

Documents.

Depositions.

Testimony.

And consequences.

Samuel Prescott was convicted on federal fraud, kidnapping, obstruction and related charges stemming from the attacks and financial network.

The recording of his midnight confrontation destroyed his claim that he had acted only to protect Arthur’s estate.

Crane’s owner received a reduced sentence after cooperating.

Several associates pleaded guilty.

Marianne admitted her role in the old financial scheme and her more recent obstruction.

Her cooperation mattered.

It did not erase what she had done.

Daniel visited her before sentencing.

Nathan did not.

Not yet.

Marianne wrote him one letter.

He kept it unopened in a drawer.

He told Rachel, “Maybe someday.”

Rachel said, “Someday is allowed.”

Trent’s case was separate.

The financial evidence showed he had participated in false transactions, though Samuel had designed the larger network.

The domestic violence evidence required no interpretation.

Arthur’s camera had recorded the foyer.

The video showed Eleanor telling Trent to leave.

It showed him block her access to the phone.

It showed Rachel flinch.

And it showed the punch.

Trent pleaded guilty rather than force Rachel and Eleanor through a full trial on those charges.

He also accepted responsibility for unlawful surveillance and financial offenses connected to Garrison.

At sentencing Rachel was permitted to speak.

She stood without notes.

Trent looked at her.

For the first time since they met, she did not wonder what expression he wanted from her.

She simply spoke.

“You spent years teaching me that peace meant keeping you calm.

“It didn’t.

“It meant keeping me quiet.

“I don’t hate you.

“But I no longer confuse understanding you with forgiving what you did.”

Trent lowered his eyes.

Rachel continued.

“You do not get to be the ending of my story.”

Then she returned to her seat.

Outside the courthouse, Eleanor asked how she felt.

Rachel looked up at the clear sky.

“Hungry.”

Eleanor blinked.

May you like

Then laughed.

They went for pancakes.
