Chapter 32 - The Eighteen Million Dollars

Samuel’s arrest broke the network.
Crane Strategic Services collapsed within days.
Its owner accepted a cooperation agreement and turned over records identifying the men responsible for the attacks on Eleanor’s house and Peter’s confinement.
Bank accounts were frozen.
Servers were seized.
Garrison Equity’s structure unraveled.
The eighteen million dollars Marlow originally traced proved to be only part of the fraud.
Investigators found additional diverted funds spread across eleven entities.
Some belonged to investors.
Some came from businesses Samuel had quietly drained.
Some came from the preservation account.
Most was recovered.
Peter was cleared of wrongdoing.
His credentials had been used under coercion.
Daniel surrendered every family document he possessed.
Marianne agreed to cooperate.
And Trent Holloway finally stopped pretending he had merely been caught in someone else’s scheme.
He admitted signing false business statements.
He admitted hiding assets from Rachel.
He admitted installing surveillance equipment.
And he admitted striking Eleanor.
Rachel never visited him.
When his attorney requested a meeting to discuss “closure,” she declined.
She did not require his explanation to recover.
The divorce moved forward.
A court granted orders preventing him from contacting her or Eleanor outside legal channels.
Weeks later Rachel received a letter from Trent.
She did not open it.
She handed it to her attorney.
Eleanor asked, “You’re sure?”
Rachel nodded.
“I spent four years listening to him explain himself.”
She placed the envelope on the desk.
“I know enough.”
Nathan remained in town.
Not because he wanted money.
Not because he wanted the Holloway name.
He wanted facts.
A DNA test confirmed what Arthur’s records had already shown.
Charles Holloway was Nathan’s biological father.
Marianne was his biological mother.
Trent was his paternal half-brother.
Nathan sat with the result for a long time.
Then folded it.
“My parents are still the people who raised me.”
Rachel smiled.
“Yes.”
“What does this make us?”
She thought.
“Complicated.”

Nathan laughed.
It was the right answer.
