Chapter 33 - The Second Beneficiary

Peter left the hospital three weeks later.

He went directly to Eleanor’s house.

He stood on the porch for almost a minute before knocking.

Not three times.

Just once.

Eleanor opened the door.

They stared at each other.

This was Arthur’s son.

And she had never known.

Peter spoke first.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For existing in a secret?”

He did not know how to answer.

Eleanor stepped aside.

“Come in.”

They sat at the kitchen table.

Rachel joined them.

Peter placed Arthur’s original beneficiary papers between them.

The trust divided certain remaining assets equally between Rachel and Peter.

Peter had signed documents years earlier declining personal distributions.

Rachel stared.

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t want Arthur’s money.”

“Were you angry?”

“For a long time.”

“And then?”

“I realized refusing his money didn’t punish him. He was dead.”

Eleanor gave a small laugh.

Peter continued.

“So I redirected my share into the preservation fund.”

Rachel looked through the papers.

“What happens now?”

Peter answered.

“You choose.”

The recovered trust funds legally available to them could be divided.

Kept.

Donated.

Used.

Rachel thought of hidden cameras.

Of locked accounts.

Of women explaining bruises.

Of people whose finances had been controlled by someone who claimed to love them.

She looked at Eleanor.

“I know what I want.”

Together Rachel and Peter established a foundation providing emergency housing, legal assistance and financial support to people leaving coercive relationships.

They named it neither after Arthur nor after the Whitmores.

Rachel refused.

“This is not a monument to Dad.”

Peter agreed.

It was called The Open Door Fund.

Eleanor approved immediately.

“No secret entrances?”

Peter smiled.

“No secret entrances.”

Nathan accepted no inheritance because none belonged to him.

But he volunteered to help establish the fund’s financial controls.

“Two signatures on everything,” he said.

Rachel raised an eyebrow.

“Trust issues?”

May you like

“Experience.”

For once the answer made everyone laugh.
