Chapter 17 - Arthur’s Letter to Eleanor

Agent Marlow arrived eight minutes later.

By then Samuel had an explanation.

He claimed Arthur once mentioned a boy named Nathan in connection with a sealed guardianship case.

Nathan called it a lie.

Marlow separated them.

The house became a crime scene again.

Broken glass.

Smoke residue.

Tire marks.

A second violent intrusion in less than forty-eight hours.

Eleanor sat at the dining table with Arthur’s envelope in front of her.

She had spent years believing she knew her husband.

Now every piece of paper he left behind seemed capable of changing the past.

Rachel sat beside her.

“Open it.”

Eleanor looked at Nathan.

He nodded.

She broke the seal.

Inside were three pages.

A photograph.

And a brass key no longer than Eleanor’s thumb.

The photograph showed Arthur standing outside a California clinic.

Beside him was a woman Eleanor recognized immediately.

Marianne Mercer.

In Arthur’s arms was an infant boy.

On the back, Arthur had written a date.

Thirty-eight years earlier.

Nathan stared at it.

His face collapsed.

“That’s me.”

Rachel turned toward him.

Nathan swallowed.

“My adoptive parents told me I came through a private placement. They never knew the biological family.”

Eleanor unfolded Arthur’s letter.

His handwriting was unmistakable.

The message was not sentimental.

Arthur had never been sentimental on paper.

He explained that Marianne had given birth to Charles Holloway’s child.

Charles wanted the existence of the baby hidden because it could expose the financial relationship between himself and Marianne.

Arthur had discovered the clinic payment while tracing stolen company money.

For eleven days, Arthur had been named temporary guardian while a protected adoption was arranged.

Nathan closed his eyes.

“So Arthur saved me.”

Daniel whispered, “And never told any of us.”

Eleanor continued reading.

Near the bottom was a warning.

Nathan Cole is not the second beneficiary.

Samuel shifted in his chair.

Rachel noticed.

Eleanor read the next line.

If Nathan returns to this house, then Peter has failed to contain the danger.

Marlow leaned forward.

“What danger?”

The final paragraph answered only partly.

The identity of the second beneficiary must remain sealed until Rachel knows why I tested her blood when she was seventeen.

Rachel’s face tightened.

Then came the last sentence.

Samuel knows there was a test.

Peter knows what it proved.

Nobody spoke.

Eleanor slowly turned toward Samuel.

He looked suddenly very tired.

“I told you Arthur never gave me the result.”

Nathan shook his head.

“That isn’t what Peter told me.”

Samuel stood.

Marlow immediately blocked him.

“Sit down.”

He obeyed.

Nathan reached across the table and touched the tiny brass key.

“There’s one more problem.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“What?”

Nathan pointed at it.

“I’ve seen that key before.”

May you like

“Where?”

“In Peter Vale’s hand.”
