Chapter 24 - T.M.H.
T.M.H. had never been a person.
It stood for Thomas Mercer Holdings.
Daniel learned the truth sitting beside Peter’s hospital bed.
His father, Thomas Mercer, had created the company decades earlier as a legitimate holding vehicle.
When Charles Holloway and Marianne began diverting Whitmore Industrial money, they routed several transactions through dormant Mercer entities.
Thomas discovered it.
Instead of joining Charles, he went to Arthur.
That decision destroyed the brothers’ relationship.
Thomas changed his name and walked away.
Arthur later used the remaining entity as a controlled account to recover stolen funds and protect people connected to the investigation.
Years later it became the T.M.H. Preservation Account.
Its two beneficiaries were Rachel and Peter.
But its real purpose was not inheritance.
It was insurance.
If anyone restarted the old shell network, T.M.H. would release funds for legal protection, forensic investigators and victim restitution.
Peter controlled it after Arthur died.
Samuel had helped draft the structure.
Which meant Samuel knew exactly how it worked.
“Why eighteen million?” Eleanor asked.
Peter answered from the hospital bed.
“Because Samuel expanded it.”
After Arthur’s death Samuel began using dormant companies from the old investigation.
Small transfers first.
Then larger ones.
Investor money entered through Garrison Equity and related entities.
Some of it went toward Trent’s failing businesses.
Some moved offshore.
Some returned through fake consulting contracts.
Peter noticed the pattern.
He began gathering evidence.
Samuel realized it.
“So he made you disappear,” Rachel said.
Peter nodded.
“He needed my credentials.”
Nathan stood near the window.
“And Marianne?”
Peter looked at him.
Nathan’s expression tightened.
Peter knew what he was really asking.
“Your mother knew Samuel was moving money.”
Nathan’s jaw clenched.
“Did she help?”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Peter continued.
“But not the way Samuel wanted.”
Marianne had initially helped recreate several shell companies because Samuel told her they were being used to recover funds Charles had hidden years earlier.
When she discovered the truth, she tried to withdraw.
Samuel threatened to reveal Nathan’s identity to Trent and blame Nathan for the missing money.
Nathan stared.
“So she protected me.”
Peter shook his head.
“She also protected herself.”
That distinction mattered.
Nobody in this story was going to be turned innocent simply because someone worse existed.
Eleanor looked at Peter.
“What is Samuel still looking for?”
Peter answered immediately.
“The master archive.”
“We found the archive.”
“No.”
He looked directly at her.
“You found Arthur’s records.”
