Chapter 5 - The Brother Daniel Never Mentioned)

Ethan arrived at Clara's parents' house after midnight.

Clara had called him only once.

"I found something."

That was all she said.

He drove three hours without stopping.

When he entered the kitchen, Clara handed him the birth record.

Ethan read it twice.

Then he looked at Rebecca.

"My father is listed as Adrian Mercer's father."

Rebecca nodded.

"But he wasn't."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Adrian's biological father was dangerous."

"Who?"

Rebecca looked at Frank.

Frank nodded.

Rebecca said, "Martin Kessler."

The other founder of Halcyon Biotech.

The man who had agreed to manipulate the trial data.

Clara sat beside Ethan.

Rebecca explained that she and Martin had been involved briefly during graduate school.

When Halcyon began, their relationship was already over.

Rebecca discovered she was pregnant shortly before the company's first major financing round.

Martin became increasingly unstable as Whitmore's acquisition approached.

"He wanted money," Rebecca said.

"He knew the technology wasn't ready. He didn't care."

After Rebecca threatened to expose the false data, Martin told her he would take the baby if she interfered with the acquisition.

Charles Whitmore helped arrange the child's placement with a family connected to Daniel Mercer.

Daniel's parents adopted Adrian privately.

Charles put his own name temporarily on sealed records to prevent Martin from locating the child through legal searches.

"Daniel knows?"

Ethan asked.

"Yes."

"All these years?"

"Yes."

Clara thought about Daniel's face at the mansion.

The anger.

The hesitation.

"He knew Adrian was his adopted brother."

Rebecca nodded.

Ethan looked at the birth record again.

"Where is Adrian now?"

Rebecca looked frightened.

"No one knows."

Clara's stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

"He disappeared ten years ago."

"Like you?"

"No."

Rebecca's voice shook.

"Adrian disappeared for real."

The room went quiet.

According to Rebecca, Adrian grew up believing the Mercers were his biological family.

Daniel was nine years older and deeply protective of him.

When Adrian turned twenty-one, Charles told him the truth.

Adrian became obsessed with Halcyon.

He began investigating the acquisition.

He believed Vivian had built part of the Whitmore fortune on falsified medical data.

Six years later, Adrian vanished.

His car was found at an airport parking garage.

His passport had not been used.

His bank accounts remained untouched.

Police eventually classified him as a missing adult.

Daniel never accepted that Adrian had left voluntarily.

Ethan leaned back.

"My father created the trust because of Adrian."

"Partly," Rebecca said.

"Adrian is the other beneficiary."

"I think so."

Clara asked, "Why would Charles give him shares?"

"Because Adrian was the only person still searching for proof."

Ethan stood and walked toward the window.

His father's final years suddenly made sense in a terrible way.

Charles had become withdrawn.

He spent hours in his private study.

He stopped attending board meetings.

Vivian told everyone he was depressed because of cancer.

Maybe he was investigating his own company.

Clara approached Ethan.

"What are you thinking?"

"That my mother knows where Adrian is."

Rebecca's face went pale.

"Don't assume that."

"She tried to destroy the letter."

"That doesn't prove she knows."

Ethan turned.

"She spent months trying to end my marriage before the trust activated. She hid what my father wrote. She lied about Clara. She destroyed evidence in front of us."

Frank spoke for the first time.

"Men who become angry around powerful people usually make mistakes."

Ethan looked at him.

Frank continued.

"If your mother has hidden something for years, don't give her a reason to destroy it tonight."

Clara touched Ethan's arm.

"He's right."

Ethan did not like it.

But he knew they were both correct.

The next morning, Daniel called.

Ethan answered on speaker.

"You left the estate," Daniel said.

"Yes."

"With Clara?"

"Yes."

"Good."

Ethan frowned.

"Why good?"

Daniel paused.

"Because Vivian knows Rosa gave you Charles's letter."

"So?"

"So Rosa is gone."

Clara stood.

"What do you mean gone?"

"No one has seen her since last night."

Ethan's voice hardened.

"Call the police."

"I already did."

"Where's my mother?"

"At the office."

"Acting normal?"

"Completely."

Clara looked at Rebecca.

The older woman was shaking.

Daniel continued.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"Someone broke into my apartment last night."

"Was anything taken?"

"Only one thing."

Daniel's voice broke slightly.

"My file on Adrian."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Daniel, listen to me carefully. Was Adrian the other beneficiary in my father's trust?"

Long silence.

"Yes."

"Then we need to find him."

Daniel breathed slowly.

"I have been trying to find my brother for ten years."

Clara looked at the birth certificate on the table.

"What if Adrian doesn't want to be found?"

Daniel heard her.

"Clara?"

"Yes."

"Adrian didn't leave willingly."

"How do you know?"

Daniel's answer changed everything.

"Because three days before he disappeared, he mailed me a key."

"A key to what?"

"I never knew."

"Do you still have it?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Daniel paused.

"That is the problem."

Ethan's patience snapped.

May you like

"What problem?"

"The key was inside the file stolen from my apartment."
