Chapter 11 - Adrian's Version of the Truth)

Adrian Marlowe lived in an ordinary house near the Connecticut coast.

No mansion.

No guards.

No visible wealth.

Clara had expected a fugitive.

Instead, she found a fifty-year-old man with tired eyes and Daniel's smile.

He made coffee.

Clara refused it.

"Why contact me?"

"Because everyone else has already chosen a side."

"And you haven't?"

"I chose mine twenty-three years ago."

Adrian led her into a basement.

The room contained filing cabinets, servers, and stacks of medical records.

Clara stared.

"You kept everything."

"Not everything."

"Enough to destroy Whitmore."

"Yes."

"Then why haven't you?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Because destroying a company is easy. Protecting patients afterward is harder."

He showed her the six death certificates.

Children aged four to thirteen.

All had participated indirectly in early Halcyon screening or related follow-up programs.

None of the official causes of death mentioned Halcyon.

Clara felt sick.

"Vivian knew?"

"Eventually."

"Charles?"

"Eventually."

"My mother?"

Adrian hesitated.

"Not all six."

Clara noticed the distinction.

"You hate Vivian."

"Yes."

"Did she kidnap you?"

Adrian laughed.

"No."

Clara stared.

"The recordings..."

"Charles misunderstood."

"Vivian said you demanded money."

"That part is true."

Clara stepped back.

"You blackmailed them?"

"I demanded compensation for the families."

"Seventeen million dollars?"

"Most of it went to families under private agreements."

"Why through Marlowe Holdings?"

"Because Whitmore lawyers refused direct payments."

Clara studied him.

"And you?"

"I kept enough to disappear."

"Why disappear?"

"Because Martin tried to kill me."

Clara froze.

Adrian explained the parking garage.

He had arranged to meet Charles.

Vivian unexpectedly arrived with Martin.

An argument became violent.

Martin attacked Adrian.

Charles intervened.

Adrian escaped through a maintenance corridor.

"What was in the equipment case?"

"Lab archives."

"So Martin didn't carry your body out."

"No."

"Why didn't you tell Daniel?"

Adrian looked away.

"Because Martin threatened him."

Daniel had recently married.

His wife was pregnant.

Martin knew their address.

Adrian believed disappearing was the only way to protect them.

Clara struggled to understand.

"You let your brother think you were dead for twenty-three years."

"Yes."

"That's cruel."

"I know."

"Why now?"

Adrian opened a drawer.

Inside was a photograph of Charles.

"Because Charles died before he could finish what we started."

"The trust."

Adrian nodded.

"Charles created it to force Vivian to share control."

"With me."

"Not originally."

Clara frowned.

"Then who?"

"With Ethan's future spouse, whoever that became."

"Why?"

"Because Charles believed Ethan would only marry someone he trusted more than the company."

Clara sat down.

"And you?"

"My beneficiary share exists only if evidence of fraud is formally submitted before activation."

Clara stared.

"So if you release everything before tomorrow..."

"I gain voting authority."

"That's why Vivian tried to stop my anniversary."

"Partly."

"What is the other reason?"

Adrian's expression changed.

"She was trying to keep you alive."

Clara stood.

"No."

"Vivian is many things. But she knows what Martin is capable of."

"Martin is still alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Then why would he care about me?"

Adrian opened another file.

"Because you're evidence."

Inside were genetic reports.

Clara read without understanding.

"What is this?"

"You weren't simply an infant participant."

Adrian took a breath.

"Your immune markers became the reference profile used to calibrate Halcyon's original system."

Clara felt cold.

"Meaning?"

"If regulators ever reopen the earliest trial data, your medical history can prove the reported baseline was falsified."

"So Martin wants me dead."

"He wanted all original evidence gone."

"Does Vivian know?"

"Yes."

Clara remembered the photographs Vivian had shown her.

The insults.

The cruelty.

The cake.

"She could have warned me."

"Vivian doesn't warn people. She controls them."

"She tried to break up my marriage."

"Because if the trust activated, your name would become public in the beneficiary filings. Martin would know exactly where to look."

Clara sat silently.

For months she had believed Vivian hated her because she was beneath the Whitmore family.

The truth was somehow worse.

Vivian had tried to drive her away rather than trust her with the danger.

Adrian walked toward a safe.

"I need you to decide something."

"What?"

"Tomorrow the trust activates."

He placed a flash drive on the table.

"If I submit this evidence, Vivian loses control and the truth becomes public."

"And Martin finds me."

"Probably."

"If you don't?"

"Vivian remains protected. The company buries Halcyon permanently."

Clara looked at the drive.

"Why is this my decision?"

"Because Charles left final authority to the person who had the most to lose."

Clara stared at him.

"Me."

Adrian nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

"What?"

He turned the phone toward Clara.

A live video appeared.
