Chapter 12 - Vivian Finally Told the Truth)

Martin Kessler was sixty-two years old.
Time had made him thinner.
It had not made him less dangerous.
He entered the mansion using security credentials that should have been deactivated years earlier.
Two guards loyal to Vivian attempted to stop him.
Both were disarmed.
Ethan had returned to the estate after discovering Clara was gone.
He never saw Martin until a gun touched his back.
Vivian was waiting in the library.
When Martin brought Ethan inside, she did not appear surprised.
"You took your time."
Ethan stared at his mother.
"You know him?"
Martin smiled.
"Your mother and I go back a long way."
Vivian ignored him.
"Where is Clara?"
Ethan said nothing.
Martin pressed the gun harder.
"Answer."
"I don't know."
Vivian studied her son's face.
"He's telling the truth."
Martin looked irritated.
"Then Adrian has her."
Ethan stared.
"You know Adrian is alive."
Vivian closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Twenty-three years."
Ethan laughed in disbelief.
"You lied to Daniel."
"I protected Daniel."
"Everyone in this family calls lying protection."
Martin walked toward Vivian.
"The files, Viv."
She stared at him.
"I don't have them."
"Charles hid copies."
"And Adrian found them."
"Then call him."
Vivian smiled coldly.
"He hates me more than you do. Why would he answer?"
Martin raised his gun.
Ethan moved.
Vivian shouted.
"No."
Martin turned the weapon toward Ethan.
Vivian's composure vanished.
"Don't touch my son."
Ethan looked at her.
For the first time in years, he saw his mother without armor.
Afraid.
Martin laughed.
"There she is."
Vivian stepped in front of Ethan.
"You want leverage? Use me."
"I already used you for thirty years."
Ethan whispered, "What does that mean?"
Martin looked delighted.
"She never told you?"
Vivian said, "Shut up."
Martin ignored her.
"Your mother didn't falsify the Halcyon results."
Ethan froze.
"Martin."
"She approved the acquisition after I told her the data was clean."
Vivian stared at the floor.
Martin continued.
"By the time she learned the truth, the company was already exposed."
Ethan looked at his mother.
"Is that true?"
Vivian did not answer.
Martin did.
"She covered it up."
Vivian finally spoke.
"Because twelve thousand employees would have lost their jobs."
"Six children died," Ethan said.
"I didn't know that yet."
"But later?"
Vivian's eyes filled.
"Later, yes."
"And you still hid it."
"Yes."
The word seemed to age her.
Ethan stared at the woman who had frightened everyone around her for decades.
"You could have told me."
"I couldn't tell anyone."
"You could have trusted Dad."
"I did."
"What happened?"
"He wanted to confess everything."
"He was right."
"I thought confession would destroy the company."
"So you destroyed people instead."
Vivian flinched.
Ethan had never seen her flinch.
Martin's phone rang.
He answered.
"Yes?"
Adrian's voice came through.
"Let Ethan go."
Martin smiled.
"Brother of the year."
"Let him go."
"Bring the drive."
"Where?"
"Here."
Adrian looked at Clara in the coastal house.
She shook her head.
Adrian continued, "I bring the drive. You release Ethan."
Martin agreed.
Then he looked at Vivian.
"Your daughter-in-law is finally useful."
Vivian's face changed.
"Clara is not coming here."
"She will."
"No."
Martin laughed.
"Why do you suddenly care?"
Vivian said nothing.
Ethan stared at her.
"You knew Martin might come after Clara."
"Yes."
"So you tried to make her leave."
"Yes."
"The photographs. The insults. The cake."
Vivian looked ashamed for the first time.
"I thought if she hated us enough, she would disappear before the trust made her identity public."
"You could have protected her without humiliating her."
"I don't know how."
The answer stunned him.
Vivian whispered, "I know how to control danger. I do not know how to ask people to trust me."
Ethan almost felt sympathy.
Almost.
Then he remembered Clara on her knees.
"You don't get forgiveness because your intentions were complicated."
"I know."
Outside, a car approached.
Martin looked toward the window.
"That will be Adrian."
Vivian shook her head.
"No."
Martin smiled.
The front door opened.
Footsteps entered the hall.

But Adrian was not the first person to walk into the library.
Clara was.
