Chapter 4 - Clara's Mother Was Never Missing)

Clara called her mother six times.
Rebecca Bennett did not answer.
On the seventh call, Clara left the mansion.
Ethan wanted to come.
Clara refused.
"I need to hear this from her."
"You're not driving alone."
"I've been alone in this house for months."
The sentence stopped him.
He handed her the keys to his car.
"Call me."
Clara drove three hours toward Pennsylvania.
Every memory of her childhood seemed different now.
Her mother had never talked about working in biotechnology.
Rebecca had always said she worked in medical administration before Clara was born.
She hated hospitals.
She avoided company reunions.
She refused to take photographs at public events.
Clara had assumed those were personality traits.
Now they looked like hiding.
When Clara arrived at her parents' house, her father was repairing a lawn mower in the garage.
Frank Bennett looked up.
His face changed immediately.
"Your mother told me you might come."
Clara got out of the car.
"So she's here."
Frank wiped his hands.
"Inside."
"Did you know?"
He said nothing.
"Did you know she helped found Halcyon Biotech?"
Frank looked older than Clara remembered.
"Yes."
Clara's eyes filled.
"My whole life?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Go talk to your mother."
Rebecca sat at the kitchen table.
A cup of untouched tea stood in front of her.
She looked nothing like the confident young scientist in Daniel's photograph.
But it was her.
Clara placed the photograph on the table.
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"Where did you get that?"
"Why did everyone think you disappeared?"
Rebecca looked toward the window.
"Because I wanted them to."
Clara sat across from her.
"Why?"
Rebecca's hands trembled.
"Halcyon wasn't supposed to become what it became."
"What was it?"
"A diagnostics company. We were developing early screening technology for autoimmune diseases."
"What happened?"
"We discovered that one of our prototype systems could identify certain inflammatory markers years before symptoms appeared."
Clara waited.
Rebecca continued.
"It could have changed treatment for millions of people."
"So why disappear?"
"Because the data was manipulated."
"By who?"
Rebecca looked at her daughter.
"Whitmore Medical Systems."
Clara felt cold.
Rebecca explained.
Whitmore wanted Halcyon's technology.
But the system produced too many false positives to receive approval quickly.
Investors were impatient.
Halcyon's other founder, Dr. Martin Kessler, agreed to adjust testing criteria.
Rebecca refused.
When she threatened to expose the manipulated trial data, someone broke into her apartment.
Her files disappeared.
Then her laboratory computer was destroyed.
"Did Vivian know?"
Rebecca's eyes filled with something deeper than fear.
"Vivian ordered it."
Clara stood.
"No."
"Sit down."
"No. You let me marry her son."
"I didn't know who Ethan was when you met him."
"But when I told you his name?"
Rebecca began crying.
"I begged you not to marry him."
Clara remembered.
Her mother had said the Whitmore world would swallow her.
Clara had thought she meant wealth.
"You should have told me."
"I was afraid."
"Of Vivian?"
"Of what would happen to you."
Clara turned away.
Rebecca whispered, "Charles helped me escape."
Clara looked back.
"What?"
"Charles discovered what Vivian had done. He came to me privately."
"Why didn't he expose her?"
"He said he needed time to secure evidence."
"Did he?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Some."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Then what did he do?"
"He arranged money, new documents, and legal protection. I moved. Met your father. Built another life."
Clara stared at Frank through the kitchen doorway.
"He knew?"
"Everything."
"And you never told me."
Rebecca wiped her face.
"You were a baby when Whitmore acquired Halcyon."
Clara froze.
"A baby?"
Rebecca nodded.
"I was pregnant during the final testing."
Clara calculated the years.
Something did not fit.
"Mom, Ethan's father created the trust before he died."
"Yes."
"He named another beneficiary."
Rebecca's face changed.
Clara noticed.
"You know."
Rebecca stood.
"Clara."
"Who is it?"
"I promised Charles."
"Who is the other beneficiary?"
Rebecca walked toward a cabinet.
She removed a small locked box.
Inside was an envelope.
She placed it on the table but did not open it.
"Charles came to see me again shortly before he died."
"What did he say?"
"He said if you ever married into his family, it would mean fate had done something neither of us could have predicted."
Clara stared.
"He knew Ethan and I were together?"
"Yes."
"Before we got married?"
"Yes."
Rebecca pushed the envelope toward her.
On the front were words in Charles Whitmore's handwriting.
For Clara Bennett, if Vivian forces the truth.
Clara's heart pounded.
She opened it.
Inside was a certified birth record.
Not Clara's.
A boy's.
Born thirty-four years earlier.
Mother: Rebecca Vale.
Father: Charles Whitmore.
Clara stared at the page.
"No."
Rebecca began crying.
Clara whispered, "You had a child with Ethan's father?"
Rebecca shook her head.
"Not with Charles."
Clara looked again.
"Then why is his name here?"
"Because he protected the baby."
Clara's fingers trembled.
"Who is he?"
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"His name is Adrian."
Clara waited.
Rebecca whispered the rest.
May you like
"Adrian Mercer."
Daniel Mercer's younger brother.
