Chapter 13 - Clara Refused to Kneel Again)

Clara entered with empty hands.

Martin pointed the gun at her.

"Where's Adrian?"

"Not here."

"Where's the drive?"

"Safe."

Martin smiled.

"You think you're brave."

Clara looked at Vivian.

"No. I learned what fear looks like."

Vivian's eyes dropped.

Ethan stepped toward Clara.

Martin raised the weapon.

"Stay there."

Clara kept walking until she stood beside Ethan.

Martin said, "The drive."

"No."

"Clara."

"No."

"You have no idea what you're holding."

"I know exactly what I'm holding."

Martin's expression hardened.

Clara continued.

"Six dead children. Manipulated trials. Shell payments. Threats. The original Halcyon records."

Martin looked toward Vivian.

"You told her everything?"

Vivian said nothing.

Clara reached into her pocket.

Martin aimed.

Clara slowly removed her phone.

"Those records were sent to four law firms, two journalists, the state attorney general, and federal investigators twelve minutes ago."

Martin froze.

Vivian stared.

Ethan whispered, "You released them?"

Clara nodded.

Martin's face changed from confidence to panic.

"You're lying."

Clara held up the phone.

"Check the news."

Martin's accomplice looked at his own device.

His expression collapsed.

"It's everywhere."

Martin turned on him.

"What?"

The man showed him.

Breaking alerts were already appearing.

Historic Medical Trial Fraud Allegations Rock Whitmore Medical Systems.

Federal Regulators Reviewing Halcyon Acquisition Records.

Families Demand Investigation.

Martin aimed at Clara.

"You stupid girl."

Vivian stepped between them.

Martin fired.

The gunshot shattered the room.

Ethan grabbed Clara.

Vivian fell.

For a second, no one understood what had happened.

Then blood appeared near Vivian's shoulder.

Ethan tackled Martin.

The gun slid across the floor.

Martin's accomplice ran.

Security officers entered from the rear corridor.

Adrian had not come alone.

He had brought police.

Martin was restrained.

Ethan dropped beside his mother.

"Mom."

Vivian's eyes opened.

"Is Clara safe?"

Ethan looked at her.

"Yes."

"Good."

Clara knelt beside Vivian.

The image felt horribly familiar.

The marble floor.

Her knees.

Vivian looking down at her.

Except this time Vivian was the one helpless.

Clara pressed cloth against the wound.

Vivian winced.

"Don't."

"Be quiet."

Vivian almost smiled.

"You're ordering me around in my own house."

Clara looked at her.

"Get used to it."

Paramedics arrived.

Martin Kessler was led through the same front door Ethan had entered carrying flowers days earlier.

Outside, cameras were gathering.

The Whitmore name was collapsing in public.

But Ethan did not care.

For the first time, his family was telling the truth.

Daniel arrived just as Adrian stepped out of an unmarked police vehicle.

The brothers saw each other across the driveway.

Daniel stopped.

Adrian stopped.

Twenty-three years disappeared between them.

Daniel walked forward.

Then punched Adrian in the face.

Adrian stumbled.

A police officer moved.

Daniel waved him back.

"You let me bury you."

Adrian touched his bleeding lip.

"I know."

"You let Mom die believing you were dead."

"I know."

Daniel hit him again.

Then he grabbed his brother and pulled him into an embrace.

Both men broke down.

Clara watched from the doorway.

Rebecca arrived minutes later.

She saw Adrian.

He saw her.

Neither moved.

There was no magical reunion.

No immediate forgiveness.

Too many years stood between them.

Adrian finally said, "Hello, Rebecca."

She whispered, "I'm sorry."

He nodded.

"So am I."

Inside the ambulance, Vivian asked for Clara.

Clara climbed in.

Vivian looked pale.

"I hated you."

Clara almost laughed.

"I noticed."

"No."

Vivian breathed painfully.

"I hated what you represented."

"What?"

"Charles's belief that someone good could survive this family."

Clara looked at her.

Vivian continued.

"And I was afraid he was right."

"Why?"

"Because then I would have to admit what I became."

Clara held her gaze.

"You don't get to make me forgive you."

"I know."

"You don't get to call cruelty protection."

"I know."

"You don't get to decide what Ethan and I do next."

Vivian nodded.

"I know."

Clara stood to leave.

Vivian stopped her.

"Clara."

"What?"

"I didn't throw the cake because of Martin."

Clara stared.

Vivian closed her eyes.

"I threw it because you were happy."

The honesty was uglier than an excuse.

Vivian whispered, "And I resented you for it."

Clara said nothing.

Vivian continued.

"That part was simply cruelty."

Clara nodded slowly.

"Thank you for finally telling the truth."

Then she left.

The trust activated the following morning.

Vivian's controlling position disappeared.

Ethan and Clara received joint voting authority.

Adrian received a smaller protected stake pending legal review.

The board placed Vivian on indefinite leave.

Ethan refused the permanent chief executive position.

Instead, he demanded an independent investigation.

For the first time in decades, no Whitmore controlled the board alone.

The company survived the first week.

Then the second.

The stock recovered slightly.

Families came forward.

Settlements were reopened.

Records were released.

And Clara made one decision Vivian never expected.

She used her new voting authority to establish a permanent independent patient compensation fund.

Not named after Whitmore.

Not named after Halcyon.

It was called the Six Lanterns Fund.

One lantern for each child whose death had been hidden.

The main secret was finally public.

But two questions remained.

Who had sent Clara the first anonymous messages?

And why had Charles's notebook said someone called A was protecting her?

Adrian insisted it was not him.

Vivian claimed she did not know.

Daniel believed Charles had another ally.

Maya believed the answer was still buried somewhere inside Whitmore Medical Systems.

Clara thought the mystery could wait.

May you like

For one week, she wanted peace.

She would not get it.
