Chapter 10 - Eleven Days Became Three)

The trust activation date suddenly felt less like an anniversary and more like a deadline.

Maya arranged private security.

Ethan suspended travel.

Daniel moved into the same hotel.

Rebecca stayed nearby.

Vivian continued attending board meetings as though nothing had happened.

Then North River Fiduciary contacted Ethan.

The trust activation date had changed.

Not legally.

Procedurally.

Because Ethan had formally assumed permanent executive authority during the acquisition negotiations, the second trigger had already occurred.

The trust would activate in three days.

Ethan stared at the notice.

"My mother knows this."

Maya nodded.

"Probably."

Clara looked at the documents.

"So she has three days."

"To do what?" Rebecca asked.

Maya answered.

"Anything."

The next morning Whitmore Medical Systems' stock fell eight percent.

An anonymous report had been sent to financial journalists alleging historic patient data manipulation.

The report included partial Halcyon records.

Vivian called an emergency board meeting.

Ethan attended remotely.

Vivian sat at the head of the table.

"We are facing a coordinated attack," she said.

"Someone is releasing stolen documents to damage this company before the succession trust activates."

One director asked, "Are the documents authentic?"

Vivian paused.

"Some appear to be."

Ethan watched faces around the table change.

Vivian continued.

"The board must temporarily suspend Ethan's executive authority."

Ethan almost laughed.

There it was.

The move.

A director named Samuel Pierce spoke.

"On what grounds?"

"Conflict of interest."

Vivian looked into the camera.

"Ethan's wife is connected to Halcyon's original founder."

Murmurs spread through the room.

Ethan said, "My wife didn't know that until this week."

Vivian replied, "Convenient."

Samuel frowned.

"Vivian, are you suggesting Clara orchestrated this?"

"I am suggesting we protect the company."

The vote failed by one.

Vivian's face did not change.

But Ethan knew her.

She was furious.

After the meeting, Maya received another anonymous file.

This one contained video.

Security footage dated May 29, 2003.

An underground parking garage.

Adrian Mercer appeared on camera.

He entered an elevator.

Three minutes later, Vivian appeared.

Then Charles.

Then a fourth person.

Martin Kessler.

Rebecca screamed when she saw him.

"He was supposed to be in Europe."

The footage skipped.

Twenty minutes later Vivian and Martin exited.

Charles did not.

Adrian did not.

Clara stared.

"What building was this?"

Maya examined the timestamp.

"Halcyon Research Annex."

The facility had been demolished in 2006.

Daniel whispered, "That's the last day I saw Adrian."

Maya looked at him.

"Where did you think he went?"

"He told me he was meeting Charles."

"Did you know Vivian would be there?"

"No."

The next clip showed Charles leaving the building four hours later.

Alone.

He appeared injured.

Blood stained his collar.

Ethan leaned closer.

"My father never told me."

Rebecca whispered, "Something happened inside."

The final video clip was recorded the next morning.

Martin exited through a service entrance.

He was pushing a large equipment case.

Daniel turned away.

"No."

Maya paused the video.

"We don't know what's inside."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I know."

His brother had never been seen again.

That afternoon, police reopened Adrian's missing-person case.

Vivian's attorneys denied involvement.

Martin Kessler could not be located.

Public pressure intensified.

Then, with forty-eight hours remaining before the trust activation, Clara disappeared.

Not violently.

Not publicly.

She left the hotel suite at five twelve in the morning.

Security footage showed her walking alone into an elevator.

At five fifteen, she exited the lobby.

At five seventeen, she entered a black sedan.

Ethan woke at six.

Her side of the bed was empty.

On the pillow was a note.

Do not follow me.

I need to know who Adrian really is.

Ethan read it twice.

Then his phone rang.

Clara's number.

He answered immediately.

"Clara?"

A man's voice replied.

"She's safe."

Ethan's blood went cold.

"Adrian."

"Yes."

"If you hurt her..."

"I have spent twenty-three years making sure your family couldn't."

"Where is she?"

"With me."

"Put her on."

A pause.

Then Clara's voice.

"Ethan."

"Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Come back."

"I can't yet."

"Why?"

"Because he showed me something."

"What?"

Clara began crying.

"The child who died in the Halcyon trial wasn't the only one."

Ethan closed his eyes.

May you like

Clara continued.

"There were six."
