Chapter 9 - the bride walked down the aisle anyway)

The next afternoon, Blackwood Villa looked like a wedding venue again.
Fresh roses covered the garden arch.
White chairs stood in perfect rows.
Musicians tuned their instruments.
Only thirty guests had been invited back.
Mostly family.
Vanessa believed Daniel wanted privacy after the scandal.
She did not know twelve of the guests were investigators.
She did not know Rachel Miller was alive.
She did not know Thomas Bell was in custody.
She did not know Calvin Ross had been arrested after trying to cross the state line.
And she did not know Daniel was wearing a microphone beneath his tuxedo shirt.
Richard Hale arrived at two fifteen.
Calm.
Confident.
He embraced Daniel.
"Today we move forward."
Daniel smiled.
"Today everything changes."
Richard seemed pleased by the phrase.
Vanessa descended the staircase at three.
For one terrible second Daniel remembered why he had loved her.
She looked beautiful.
Not the cold woman shouting at Sophie.
Not the frightened woman searching underground rooms.
The woman he had met three years earlier.
The woman who brought soup when he was sick.
The woman who spent hours choosing Eleanor's favorite music for the memorial.
Daniel wondered how much of her had been real.
That was the cruelest part.
Villains in stories were simple.
Real people were not.
Vanessa reached him.
"You came."
Daniel looked at her.
"Where else would I be?"
She smiled nervously.
The ceremony began.
The officiant spoke about trust.
Daniel almost laughed.
Then came the vows.
Vanessa read hers first.
She promised loyalty.
Honesty.
Partnership.
Daniel watched Richard in the front row.
Richard checked his watch.
Waiting.
For what?
The legal signing would happen after the ceremony inside the library.
Daniel had arranged it exactly as Thomas originally planned.
Maya believed Richard would reveal his priorities once he thought the marriage was complete.
The officiant turned to Daniel.
"Daniel, do you take Vanessa"
Daniel interrupted.
"Before I answer, I need to ask her something."
Vanessa's smile stiffened.
The guests shifted.
Daniel took her hands.
"Did you know Rachel Miller was being held against her will?"
Silence fell.
Vanessa's fingers went cold.
"Daniel."
"Just answer."
She glanced toward her father.
Daniel saw it.
So did Maya.
Richard remained motionless.
Vanessa whispered, "This isn't the place."
"Actually, I think it is."
"You're humiliating me."
"Sophie cried in this house yesterday and you told her that her mother was gone."
Vanessa pulled her hands away.
"Because I thought she was."
"Why?"
"Because Rachel left."
"No."
Vanessa stared.
Daniel continued.
"Rachel didn't leave."
Richard stood.
"This ceremony is over."
Daniel turned.
"Sit down, Richard."
Richard laughed.
"You're behaving like a child."
Daniel looked back at Vanessa.
"Where was Rachel?"
"I don't know."
"Your father's lake house?"
Vanessa blinked.
"The old winery?"
Her lips parted.
"The hospital near the river?"
Her face emptied of color.
Richard moved toward the aisle.
Two plainclothes officers stepped in front of him.
He stopped.
Vanessa looked around.
Then back at Daniel.
"You found her."
It was not a question.
Daniel's voice cracked.
"Yes."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
The guests erupted in whispers.
Daniel asked, "You knew."
She shook her head.
"I knew my father wanted her out of Blackwood."
"How?"
"He said she was stealing."
"Did you believe him?"
Vanessa began crying.
"I wanted to."
"Did you help delete the cameras?"
Silence.
"Vanessa."
"Yes."
Daniel closed his eyes.
The word destroyed the last remaining illusion.
"Why?"
"My father said Rachel was trying to ruin us."
"Us?"
"He said she wanted you."
Daniel stared.
"What?"
"He said Rachel was obsessed with you. That she was trying to break the engagement."
Daniel almost laughed.
Rachel had never shown romantic interest in him.
Not once.
Richard had understood exactly which insecurity to use against his daughter.
Daniel asked, "Did you threaten Sophie?"
Vanessa looked toward the villa.
"I was angry."
"You told Rachel to think about her daughter."
"I didn't mean they'd hurt her."
"You told a six-year-old her mother was gone."
"I was terrified."
"So was she."
Vanessa covered her face.
Richard suddenly said, "Enough."
Everyone turned.
He stepped forward.
"My daughter made mistakes because Daniel Reed is incapable of managing his own household."
Vanessa lowered her hands.
"Father."
Richard ignored her.
"Rachel Miller stole confidential records. Eleanor was senile. Thomas was incompetent. And Daniel has spent years pretending inherited money makes him qualified to run an empire."
Daniel stared.
There it was.
The mask gone.
Richard continued.
"The Reed holdings would have collapsed without me."
"So you stole from them?"
"I stabilized them."
"By moving millions into your companies?"
"By moving capital where it could survive."
Daniel glanced at Maya.
She remained seated.
Recording everything.
Richard realized too late that he had begun explaining.
He stopped.
Daniel said, "You needed the wedding."
Richard smiled.
"You still don't understand."
"Then explain it."
"Don't."
The voice came from behind them.
Rachel.
Everyone turned.
She stood at the garden entrance.
Sophie held her hand.
Martha stood beside them.
Daniel had not expected Rachel to come.
Neither had Richard.
His face changed completely.
Rachel walked toward the aisle.
Sophie saw Vanessa.
Her grip tightened.
But she did not hide.
Rachel stopped ten feet from Richard.
"You told me Daniel's marriage would unlock the entire trust."
Richard said nothing.
"You told me after Vanessa became Daniel's wife, you could force the succession vote."
Vanessa looked at her father.
"What succession vote?"
Richard turned sharply.
"Be quiet."
Vanessa stepped back.
Daniel asked, "What vote?"
Rachel looked at him.
"The original Reed trust does not transfer only through inheritance."
Richard's jaw clenched.
Rachel continued.
"It transfers through bloodline priority."
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.
"What does that mean?"
A voice answered from the front row.
"It means you were never supposed to inherit Blackwood."
Everyone turned.
The speaker was eighty-year-old Samuel Reed.
Daniel's great-uncle.
A man who had barely spoken to Daniel in fifteen years.
Samuel stood with a cane.
His face looked gray.
Daniel stared.
"What are you talking about?"
Samuel looked at Richard.
"You should have left Arthur's secret buried."
Richard smiled.
"Too late."
Samuel looked at Daniel again.
"Your father had another child."
No one moved.
Daniel heard Vanessa whisper, "What?"
May you like
Samuel's next words changed the Reed family forever.
"And that child was born before you."
