Chapter 10 - the first child)

The wedding chairs remained in rows long after the ceremony ceased to exist.
Nobody knew whether to leave.
Daniel did not care.
He followed Samuel into his father's study.
Rachel came with him.
Aaron and Maya stayed near Richard.
Vanessa remained in the garden.
She looked as shocked as anyone.
Daniel closed the study door.
"Start talking."
Samuel sat slowly.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize. Explain."
Samuel rested both hands on his cane.
"Arthur was nineteen."
Daniel waited.
"He was in college. He fell in love with a girl named Catherine Moore."
Daniel had never heard the name.
"They had a child?"
"Yes."
"A son?"
Samuel hesitated.
"A daughter."
Daniel stared.
"I have a sister."
"Half sister."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
"You tell me my father had another child and you don't know where she is?"
"Arthur lost contact."
"How do you lose contact with your own daughter?"
Samuel looked ashamed.
"Your grandfather interfered."
Daniel understood immediately.
The Reed family in those days had been even more obsessed with reputation.
Arthur Reed was the heir.
Catherine Moore came from an ordinary family.
Pregnancy outside marriage would have been considered scandalous.
"What did they do?"
Samuel looked toward the window.
"They paid Catherine to leave."
Daniel felt sick.
"My father agreed?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Arthur wanted to marry her."
Samuel's voice softened.
"Your grandfather threatened to disinherit him. Catherine disappeared before Arthur could stop it."
"Disappeared?"
"She took the baby and left."
"Where?"
"Arthur spent years searching."
Daniel looked at Rachel.
She was pale.
"Did Eleanor know?"
Samuel nodded.
"Later."
Daniel remembered his grandmother's video.
The hidden succession clause.
"What does this have to do with the trust?"
Samuel explained.
Arthur inherited most Reed assets after Daniel's grandfather died.
Years later, overwhelmed by guilt, Arthur amended the family trust.
If his first child or her descendants were ever found, they would receive priority rights to Blackwood Villa and several associated holdings.
Daniel stared.
"He took my inheritance."
"No."
Samuel shook his head.
"He corrected what he believed had been stolen from your sister."
Daniel struggled to process it.
"Then why didn't he tell me?"
"He planned to."
"When?"
"Before he died."
Arthur died suddenly in a boating accident.
Daniel had been twenty-nine.
No final conversation happened.
The trust amendment remained hidden inside confidential files.
Thomas Bell found it years later.
Richard Hale learned about it.
Rachel asked, "Why would Daniel marrying Vanessa matter?"
Samuel looked at her.
"The clause has a second condition."
Daniel almost laughed from exhaustion.
"Of course it does."
"If Arthur's first bloodline could not be located, trustees could vote to dissolve the priority clause after Daniel's marriage created a new legally recognized family branch."
Rachel understood.
"So Richard wanted Daniel married quickly, then wanted trustees under his influence to eliminate the claim."
Samuel nodded.
"After that, there would be no risk of the missing heir returning."
Daniel paced.
"And Vanessa would obtain authority through the revised trust."
"Yes."
"Richard steals the assets, controls Vanessa, and the first child loses the right forever."
"Essentially."
Daniel opened the study door.
Richard stood in the foyer between two officers.
Daniel walked straight toward him.
"Where is she?"
Richard smiled.
"Who?"
"My sister."
"I have no idea."
"You knew about her."
"I knew about a clause."
"Thomas investigated."
Richard's smile remained.
"Thomas investigated many things."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Did he find her?"
Richard said nothing.
That silence was answer enough.
Daniel turned to Maya.
"Search everything."
Richard laughed.
"You think warrants will give you twenty years of work?"
Maya replied, "No. Thomas Bell will."
Richard's smile disappeared.
Vanessa stood near the stairs.
"Father."
Richard ignored her.
She walked closer.
"Did you use me to get the trust?"
He looked at her.
"Don't be dramatic."
"Did you?"
"Everything I did protected your future."
"You told me Daniel loved Rachel."
Richard exhaled impatiently.
"You were jealous. It was useful."
Vanessa looked as if he had slapped her.
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
Only sadness.
Vanessa asked, "You told me Rachel was stealing."
"She was stealing information."
"You said she was planning to take Sophie and disappear."
"Would you have helped otherwise?"
Vanessa began crying.
Richard looked disgusted.
"This weakness is why I had to manage everything."
Something inside Vanessa changed.
She straightened.
Then she removed the engagement ring from her finger.
Daniel watched.
She placed it on the marble table between them.
"I deleted the cameras."
Richard stared.
Vanessa continued.
"I gave my father Rachel's archive schedule. I told him when she would be alone."
Her attorney rushed forward.
"Vanessa, stop talking."
She ignored him.
"I threatened Rachel because I believed she wanted to destroy my marriage."
Daniel listened.
"I knew my father planned to scare her into leaving."
Vanessa looked at Sophie.
"I did not know they were going to hold her."
Sophie moved closer to Rachel.
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"I am sorry."
Rachel said nothing.
Vanessa turned to Maya.
"I'll tell you everything I know."
Richard's composure finally cracked.
"You ungrateful fool."
Vanessa looked at him.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"You taught me exactly what loyalty meant to you."
Officers led Richard away.
It should have felt like an ending.
It did not.
Because Daniel now knew someone else existed.
A sister.
Older than him.
Possibly alive.
May you like
And if Thomas had found her, Richard might have done more than hide information.
He might have hidden a person.
