Chapter 8 - the quarry)

Aaron did not use local police.

He contacted state tactical officers directly.

They approached the abandoned quarry before dawn without sirens.

Daniel remained at Blackwood.

It nearly broke him.

Every minute felt like an hour.

At 4:51 a.m., Aaron sent one message.

We found someone.

Daniel called immediately.

Aaron answered on the second ring.

"Is it Rachel?"

Silence.

Daniel's heart sank.

"Aaron."

"It's Thomas Bell."

Daniel sat down.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Rachel?"

"Not here."

"What happened?"

Thomas had been found locked inside an equipment shed.

Dehydrated.

Bruised.

Terrified.

He claimed Richard Hale had turned against him.

According to Thomas, he had helped move Rachel from Blackwood to Eleanor's lake house.

Then to the winery.

But he insisted Rachel was unharmed.

"Why should anyone believe him?" Daniel asked.

"We don't."

"What did he say about Vanessa?"

Aaron paused.

"That's complicated."

"Tell me."

Thomas claimed Vanessa did not know the full plan.

She knew Rachel had discovered financial irregularities.

She knew Richard wanted Rachel removed from Blackwood temporarily.

She knew the wedding needed to happen.

But Thomas claimed she believed Rachel would be paid to leave afterward.

Daniel almost laughed.

"She received a call from the lake house."

"Thomas says that was Richard."

"Using whose phone?"

"We don't know yet."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Where is Rachel now?"

"Thomas says Richard moved her after the winery."

"Where?"

"He doesn't know."

"Convenient."

"Very."

Thomas did provide one useful detail.

Rachel had stolen a second phone while at the lake house.

She hid it from her captors.

Thomas discovered it at the winery after Rachel had already sent something.

A message.

Maybe a location.

Maybe evidence.

He destroyed the phone before checking.

Or so he claimed.

Daniel immediately thought of Sophie's basket.

Rachel used trails.

Codes.

Objects.

If she had managed to send one message, she would send it somewhere meaningful.

Daniel checked his own devices.

Nothing.

Eleanor's email.

Nothing.

Rachel's work account.

No outgoing messages after her disappearance.

Then Daniel remembered someone Rachel trusted even more than him.

Her sister.

Laura Miller lived in Portland.

Daniel called.

Laura answered sleepily.

Her voice changed the instant he explained.

"I got an email yesterday."

Daniel stood.

"From Rachel?"

"I thought it was spam."

"What did it say?"

"Nothing. Just numbers."

"Read them."

Laura opened the email.

"Forty-one point seven. Seventy-three point two."

Coordinates.

Maya entered them into a map.

The location appeared seven miles east of the quarry.

A rural district near the river.

There was only one large property nearby.

A former children's hospital converted into private storage facilities.

Owned by a subsidiary of Hale Strategic Holdings.

Aaron redirected the team.

Daniel could no longer stay behind.

He drove with Maya.

Dawn broke as they reached the property perimeter.

The old hospital stood behind dead trees and a rusted gate.

Three stories.

Red brick.

Boarded windows.

Daniel felt cold despite the summer air.

Officers entered.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Then Maya's radio came alive.

"Female located."

Daniel stopped breathing.

"Condition?"

"Conscious."

Daniel ran before anyone could stop him.

He crossed the courtyard.

Entered through a side door.

Followed voices down a hallway.

A state officer blocked him.

"Sir."

"That's Rachel."

"We need to clear the building."

"Please."

The officer saw his face.

After a moment, he stepped aside.

Rachel sat on a mattress in a small office.

A blanket covered her shoulders.

Her hair was tangled.

Her face looked exhausted.

But she was alive.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

Rachel looked up.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then she said, "Sophie?"

"Safe."

Rachel closed her eyes.

A sob escaped her.

Daniel crossed the room.

She grabbed his hands.

"She didn't see them take me?"

"She saw enough to save you."

Rachel cried.

Daniel knelt beside her.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I believed you left."

Rachel stared at him.

"Vanessa told you."

"I should have known."

"Yes."

The word hurt because it was true.

Rachel squeezed his hand.

"But you came."

Daniel nodded.

"Who did this?"

Her expression changed.

"Richard planned it."

"Thomas?"

"Helped."

"Calvin?"

"Helped."

"Vanessa?"

Rachel hesitated.

Daniel felt his heart pounding.

"Rachel."

"She knew they were going to frighten me into leaving."

"Did she know you were being held?"

"I don't know."

"What did she say to you?"

Rachel looked toward the officers.

"Before they took me, Vanessa came into the archive."

"I know."

"She threatened Sophie."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Anything else?"

"She said tomorrow everything changes."

Daniel remembered Vanessa saying nearly the same thing.

Tomorrow everything will finally be ours.

Rachel continued.

"There's something you don't understand."

"What?"

"The money isn't why Richard wanted the wedding."

Daniel frowned.

"Then what is?"

Rachel looked at him.

"The ownership of Blackwood."

"The villa?"

"Not just the villa."

She took a breath.

"Eleanor discovered the original family trust has a hidden succession clause."

Daniel stared.

"What succession clause?"

"Your father changed it before he died."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Rachel shook her head.

"But Richard does."

Daniel stood.

Rachel grabbed his sleeve.

"Daniel."

He turned.

"The wedding is tomorrow."

"I know."

"You can't marry her."

"I won't."

Rachel searched his face.

"Then why do you look like you're still going through with it?"

Daniel thought about Vanessa.

Richard.

The hidden clause.

The years of stolen money.

The people inside his home who had betrayed him.

Then he said, "Because they don't know we found you."

Rachel understood.

"You want them to believe I'm still missing."

"Yes."

"And you want Richard at the wedding."

"Yes."

Rachel slowly nodded.

"Then there's one more thing you need."

"What?"

She looked at Maya.

"When they moved me from the winery, Richard came himself."

Daniel waited.

"He was angry. He thought I had found something in the original ledger."

"What ledger?"

"Your father's."

"What did you tell him?"

"Nothing."

Rachel almost smiled.

"But he told me enough."

Daniel leaned closer.

"What did he say?"

Rachel repeated the sentence exactly.

"Arthur should have buried the truth with the first child."

Daniel stared at her.

"The first child?"

Rachel nodded.

"I don't know what it means."

Neither did Daniel.

But suddenly the wedding was no longer only about exposing a criminal scheme.

May you like

There was a secret inside the Reed family itself.

And Daniel was beginning to suspect his father had spent years hiding it.
