Chapter 15 - the phone call from a dead man)

Three weeks later, Blackwood Villa became quiet again.
The flowers were gone.
The wedding chairs were gone.
The newspapers moved on to other scandals.
Richard Hale remained in custody while investigators unraveled years of financial transactions.
Thomas Bell was cooperating.
Calvin Ross had agreed to testify about the surveillance deletion and Rachel's abduction.
Vanessa moved out of the state.
She gave investigators extensive records from her father's private files.
Daniel never asked where she went.
The engagement ring remained in an evidence envelope.
Rachel returned to Blackwood with Sophie.
Not as an employee.
Daniel offered her something Eleanor had apparently intended years earlier.
A permanent seat on the Blackwood archival trust.
Rachel initially refused.
Then Sophie announced that she wanted to live near the room with Grandma Eleanor's piano.
Rachel accepted.
For the first time since the wedding, there was laughter inside the foyer.
Sophie ran across the same marble floor where she had once stood crying with her wicker basket.
Daniel watched from the staircase.
She stopped beneath the chandelier.
"Uncle Daniel."
Daniel smiled.
Technically he was her great-uncle.
Sophie thought that sounded ridiculous.
So Uncle Daniel remained.
"Yes?"
"Mom says I can't slide on the floor."
"Your mom is right."
"Grandma Eleanor let me."
"Grandma Eleanor broke many rules."
Sophie smiled.
Rachel appeared behind her.
"Do not encourage her."
Daniel raised his hands.
"I said nothing."
Life had not returned to normal.
It had become something new.
Rachel was safe.
Sophie was safe.
The wedding had been stopped.
Richard's control was broken.
Millions in diverted Reed assets were being frozen and recovered.
Daniel finally understood that losing Vanessa was not the destruction of his future.
It was the destruction of a lie.
That felt like enough.
Almost.
There were still unanswered questions.
Caroline remained missing.
Michael Bennett's disappearance remained unsolved.
And the grave beneath Arthur Reed's name had yielded the most disturbing answer of all.
The body was not Arthur.
DNA results confirmed it.
The man buried for nine years was unrelated to the Reed family.
Investigators had not yet identified him.
Daniel stood in his father's study holding the report.
Rachel entered.
"You knew before you opened it."
"I suspected."
"That's different."
He placed the report down.
"My father survived the boat."
"Maybe."
"Or never got on it."
Rachel sat across from him.
"Caroline said Arthur disappeared."
"Which means she knew."
"Or believed."
Daniel rubbed his eyes.
Maya had traced the mysterious phone connected to A.R. through several towers.
Whoever carried it moved frequently.
No registered address.
No financial trail.
No digital identity.
The phone had been silent for three weeks.
Daniel began to wonder whether it would ever ring again.
Then Sophie appeared at the study door holding an old wooden box.
"Look what I found."
Rachel frowned.
"Where did you get that?"
"Grandma Eleanor's closet."
Daniel recognized the box.
Eleanor used it for photographs.
Sophie placed it on the desk.
Most pictures were ordinary.
Family vacations.
Christmas dinners.
Daniel as a child.
Arthur sailing.
Then Rachel found a photograph tucked beneath the lining.
Four people stood outside Blackwood Villa.
Arthur.
Eleanor.
A young Caroline.
And Michael.
Daniel stared.
The date printed on the back was seven years after Arthur's supposed death.
His father had been alive.
Standing beside his hidden daughter and grandson.
Eleanor had been there too.
Everyone had known except Daniel.
He turned the photograph over.
A sentence was written in Arthur's handwriting.
If Daniel learns the truth before Richard is removed, we all die.
Rachel read it twice.
"What truth?"
Daniel shook his head.
Sophie pointed at the photograph.
"I know that man."
Daniel looked at her.
"Which man?"
She pointed directly at Arthur.
"My grandpa."
Rachel froze.
"Sophie, you've never met him."
"Yes I did."
Daniel crouched.
"When?"
Sophie thought.
"When Mommy was sleeping."
Rachel's face drained of color.
"What?"
"At the hospital."
Daniel stared.
The hospital where Rachel had been held.
Sophie had never been there.
Or so everyone believed.
Rachel knelt beside her.
"Sophie, tell me exactly what you mean."
The child looked confused by their fear.
"The man came to Grandma Eleanor's room."
"When?"
"Before she went to heaven."
Daniel stopped breathing.
Sophie continued.
"He gave me candy."
The same detail she once remembered about Thomas.
But this time she was pointing at Arthur.
"He told me I looked like Michael."
Rachel grabbed the edge of the desk.
Daniel whispered, "What else did he say?"
Sophie looked at him.
"He said I couldn't tell you."
"Why?"
"He said you would try to find him."
Daniel stood.
His phone rang.
Everyone jumped.
Unknown number.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Rachel whispered, "Answer."
He pressed the button.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then breathing.
A man's voice.
Older.
Calm.
Painfully familiar.
"Daniel."
His knees nearly gave way.
He knew that voice.
He had heard it thousands of times as a child.
Calling him downstairs for breakfast.
Shouting across a lake.
Reading stories beside his bed.
Daniel could barely speak.
"Dad?"
Rachel covered her mouth.
The voice answered.
"You were never supposed to open Eleanor's box."
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"Where are you?"
"That doesn't matter."
"You've been alive for nine years."
"I know."
"You let me bury someone else."
Silence.
Daniel's anger exploded.
"You let me think you were dead."
"I had no choice."
"Everyone says that."
"Daniel, listen to me."
"No. You listen to me. Caroline is missing. Michael disappeared. Rachel was kidnapped. Sophie was threatened. Richard stole from our family. If you know anything, you tell me now."
Arthur breathed slowly.
Then he said something Daniel did not expect.
"Richard was never the person I was hiding from."
Daniel became still.
"Then who?"
Arthur did not answer.
Daniel shouted, "Who?"
The line crackled.
Arthur finally spoke.
"Look at the photograph again."
Daniel looked.
Arthur.
Eleanor.
Caroline.
Michael.
Four people.
"What am I looking for?"
"The window."
Daniel stared at the Blackwood Villa window behind them.
At first he saw only reflected sky.
Then he noticed a face.
Someone standing inside the house.
Watching the photograph being taken.
Daniel moved closer.
The image was blurry.
Older man.
Dark jacket.
Hand against the glass.
Daniel recognized him.
Impossible.
He looked toward Rachel.
She recognized him too.
Samuel Reed.
Daniel's great-uncle.
The man who claimed he had only seen Arthur once after his supposed death.
Arthur whispered through the phone.
"Samuel did not accidentally discover that I survived."
Daniel's heart pounded.
"What did he do?"
"He arranged the boat."
Daniel stopped breathing.
Rachel whispered, "Oh my God."
Arthur continued.
"Richard stole money because Samuel allowed him to."
"Why?"
"Because Richard was useful."
"For what?"
Arthur was silent.
Daniel gripped the phone.
"Dad."
"There is one thing Eleanor never learned."
"What?"
"Why Samuel wanted the first bloodline erased."
Daniel looked at Sophie.
The child stood beside Rachel, confused.
Arthur's voice dropped.
"Do not let Samuel near Sophie."
Daniel's blood turned cold.
"He's been near her for years."
"I know."
"Then tell me why."
A sound came through the phone.
A door closing.
Arthur's breathing changed.
"Dad?"
No answer.
"Dad."
Arthur whispered, "He found me."
The call ended.
Daniel immediately dialed back.
Nothing.
Maya began tracing the number.
Rachel rushed Sophie upstairs.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Samuel behind the glass.
Watching.
Planning.
Waiting.
Then Daniel noticed something else.
A detail hidden beneath Arthur's handwritten warning.
There was another line.
So faint it was almost invisible.
He held the photograph beneath the desk lamp.
The sentence slowly became readable.
Samuel is not a Reed.
Daniel stared at it.
Everything stopped.
If Samuel was not a Reed, then the man who had controlled family decisions for decades was hiding an identity nobody had questioned.
Daniel reached for Eleanor's records.
Before he could open the first folder, the front doorbell rang.
Three slow chimes echoed through Blackwood Villa.
Martha appeared in the study doorway.
Her face was white.
"Mr. Reed."
Daniel stood.
"What?"
She looked toward the foyer.
"You need to come downstairs."
Daniel moved past her.
Rachel stood at the top of the staircase holding Sophie's hand.
Two state officers were near the entrance.
The massive dark wooden doors were open.
A man stood outside.
Rain covered his long black coat.
His hair was gray.
His face looked older than the photographs.
But Daniel recognized him immediately.
Arthur Reed.
His father.
Alive.
Daniel could not move.
Arthur looked past him.
Past Rachel.
Directly at Sophie.
Then he said the words that ensured none of them would sleep peacefully again.
"Take Sophie and leave Blackwood now."
Daniel found his voice.
"Why?"
Arthur stepped inside.
His eyes moved toward the second-floor balcony.
May you like
Fear crossed his face.
"Because Samuel is already in the house."
