Chapter 5 - the recording eleanor hid)

The memory card contained three files.

Daniel watched the first in his father's study with Aaron standing beside him.

The footage had been recorded six weeks earlier.

Eleanor Reed sat in the same room.

She looked thin.

Tired.

But her voice was steady.

"If Daniel is watching this, then I failed to tell him myself."

Daniel sat down.

His grandmother stared through the screen as if she had known exactly where he would be sitting.

"I made mistakes with this family. Your father made mistakes too. We trusted men who knew how to make theft look like administration."

Aaron glanced at Daniel.

Eleanor continued.

"Thomas Bell has been redirecting money from the family trust for years."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Thomas.

The man who handled his father's funeral.

The man who sat beside Eleanor at board meetings.

The man who had called Daniel "son" more than once.

"Thomas did not act alone."

Eleanor took a breath.

"I believe Richard Hale became involved after Arthur's death."

Daniel opened his eyes.

"Vanessa's father?"

Aaron nodded toward the screen.

Eleanor answered the question herself.

"Richard needed access to our holdings. Thomas needed protection. Their companies began moving money through property investments that appeared legitimate on paper."

She lifted a folder.

"Then Vanessa entered Daniel's life."

Daniel felt sick.

He met Vanessa at a charity dinner three years earlier.

She had laughed at his terrible joke about auction wine.

She had pretended not to know who he was.

Or so he thought.

Eleanor continued.

"I do not know whether Vanessa approached Daniel intentionally. I only know that after their engagement, Thomas prepared a revised trust instrument granting Vanessa unusual authority after marriage."

Daniel remembered signing.

A stack of papers.

Vanessa kissing his cheek.

Thomas telling him everything was routine.

"I confronted Thomas," Eleanor said. "He denied wrongdoing."

The video changed.

A second file.

Hidden camera footage.

Eleanor's study.

Thomas Bell stood near the fireplace.

Richard Hale faced him.

The audio was low but clear.

Richard said, "After the wedding, access stops being a problem."

Thomas replied, "Only if Daniel signs the final transfer."

"He will."

"And Eleanor?"

A pause.

Richard looked toward the door.

"She won't be a problem much longer."

Daniel stood so quickly the chair scraped the floor.

Aaron paused the video.

Daniel's hands shook.

Eleanor died of heart failure.

She had been eighty-two.

Her doctors had documented declining health.

Nothing had seemed suspicious.

Daniel looked at Aaron.

"Was my grandmother killed?"

"We don't know that."

"You heard him."

"I heard an ambiguous statement. We investigate facts."

Daniel paced.

Aaron resumed the video.

Thomas spoke again.

"Rachel is becoming curious."

Richard replied, "Then give her something else to catalog."

The recording ended.

The third file had been created three days before Eleanor died.

Eleanor appeared alone.

"If anything happens to Rachel Miller, do not believe the first explanation you are given."

Daniel stared.

It felt as though Eleanor had reached through time and slapped him.

He had believed the first explanation.

Immediately.

The door opened.

Martha entered with Sophie.

The child looked exhausted.

"Mr. Daniel?"

Daniel shut the laptop.

He forced himself to smile.

"What is it?"

Sophie held the wicker basket.

"I remembered something."

He crouched beside her.

"What?"

"The man."

"What man?"

"The one by Mommy's car."

Aaron joined them.

Sophie looked toward the window as if trying to reconstruct the scene.

"He had shiny shoes."

Aaron smiled gently.

"Anything else?"

"He was old."

"Older than Daniel?"

Sophie nodded.

"Did you know him?"

She thought.

"Maybe."

Daniel's heart began to pound.

Sophie looked at him.

"He came to Grandma Eleanor's birthday."

Daniel remembered the dinner.

Nearly forty guests.

Business partners.

Family friends.

Thomas Bell had been there.

Richard Hale had been there.

Sophie pointed toward the laptop.

"That man."

Daniel froze.

He had not realized the paused video was visible.

Thomas stood on the screen beside Eleanor's fireplace.

Sophie pointed again.

"Him."

Aaron asked, "You're sure?"

"He gave me chocolate."

Daniel felt anger rise.

Thomas Bell had helped move Rachel's car.

Maybe more.

Aaron immediately called officers already heading to Thomas's home.

No answer.

Thomas was not there.

His housekeeper said he left before sunrise.

His office was locked.

His phone was turned off.

His passport was missing.

By evening, police had issued an alert.

Vanessa remained at Blackwood with her attorney because she was not under arrest.

Richard left after refusing further questions.

Daniel wanted both of them gone.

But Aaron gave him an idea.

"Don't change anything yet."

"Why?"

"If they think you know everything, they run."

"They already know police are involved."

"They don't know what was on that card."

Daniel understood.

So he walked into the drawing room where Vanessa sat in her wedding dress, staring out at the garden where she should have been married hours earlier.

"Nothing useful was on the card."

She turned.

"What card?"

Daniel almost admired the discipline.

"The one Rachel hid."

Vanessa looked away.

"I'm tired of being treated like a criminal."

"Then help me find her."

"I don't know where she is."

"Thomas does."

That got her attention.

"Thomas?"

"Sophie saw him with Rachel's car."

Vanessa stood.

"She's wrong."

"How do you know?"

Silence.

Daniel stepped closer.

"How do you know she's wrong?"

Vanessa looked at him.

For a moment he saw the woman he had loved.

Or believed he loved.

Her eyes filled.

"Daniel, please."

"Please what?"

"Don't do this."

"Rachel is missing."

"Our life is disappearing."

"Maybe our life wasn't real."

She flinched.

Daniel hated himself for feeling sympathy.

Then Vanessa whispered, "You don't understand my father."

Daniel stopped.

It was the first crack.

"What about him?"

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"Nothing."

"Vanessa."

"I said nothing."

She walked away.

Daniel let her.

At midnight, the house became quiet.

Sophie slept in Eleanor's old bedroom with Martha nearby.

Aaron stationed an unmarked car outside.

Daniel remained awake in his father's study.

At 12:43 a.m., Vanessa left her room.

She did not know Daniel was watching the security monitor.

She entered the east corridor.

Then disappeared beneath the staircase.

Daniel called Aaron.

Together they followed.

They found Vanessa inside the underground vault.

She was standing beside the old desk.

Holding Rachel's dead phone.

Daniel said her name.

Vanessa spun around.

The phone fell.

"What are you doing?"

She backed away.

"I came to see what you found."

"At midnight?"

"I couldn't sleep."

Aaron stepped inside.

Vanessa looked trapped.

Then a sound came from the corridor behind them.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Heavy.

Everyone stopped.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Daniel grabbed a flashlight.

The sound came again.

Not from the villa.

From behind the second steel door.

The tunnel toward the carriage house.

Aaron drew his weapon and ordered Vanessa to remain where she was.

Daniel followed him into the darkness.

They reached the wooden door.

Another knock.

Closer.

Aaron opened it.

The carriage house was empty.

But the outside door stood open.

Rain blew in.

A package lay on the floor.

Brown paper.

No name.

Inside was Rachel's green scarf.

And a photograph.

Daniel picked it up.

Rachel sat in a chair inside an unfamiliar room.

She was alive.

A newspaper rested on her lap.

Today's date was visible.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written one sentence.

Finish the wedding, or the next photograph will be different.
