Chapter 14 - rachel's secret)

Rachel asked everyone to leave the lighthouse except Daniel.

Maya refused at first.

Daniel insisted.

Finally the investigators waited outside.

Rachel stood near the window overlooking the sea.

Daniel held Caroline's letter.

"Who was Sophie's father?"

Rachel closed her eyes.

"His name was Michael."

"Michael what?"

"Michael Reed."

Daniel stared.

"I don't know a Michael Reed."

"You wouldn't."

"Why?"

"Because he didn't use the name."

Rachel turned.

"When I met him, he called himself Michael Lane."

Daniel tried to follow.

"Was he related to me?"

"I didn't know."

"But now?"

Rachel nodded.

"Now I think he was."

Daniel sat.

Rachel began from the beginning.

Seven years earlier, before she worked at Blackwood, Rachel was a graduate student studying archival preservation.

She met Michael at a university exhibition.

He was quiet.

Funny.

Private.

They dated for eight months.

Rachel became pregnant.

Michael was frightened but happy.

They planned to live together.

Then he disappeared.

No explanation.

No call.

Nothing.

Rachel searched.

The address he had given her was false.

His employer had never heard of him.

His phone was disconnected.

She believed he had abandoned her.

Months later, after Sophie was born, Rachel received an envelope.

Inside was money.

And a letter.

I am sorry. Keeping you away is the only way I can keep her safe.

Rachel kept the letter.

She never understood it.

Two years later she applied for a temporary archival position at Blackwood.

Eleanor noticed her surname.

Asked questions about Sophie.

Asked questions about Michael.

Rachel thought the old woman was simply curious.

Eventually Eleanor offered her permanent work.

Daniel stared.

"My grandmother hired you because of Sophie."

"I think so."

"Why didn't she tell you?"

"She never said."

"Did she know Michael?"

Rachel shook her head.

"Not by that name."

Daniel looked at the ocean.

"If Michael was a Reed, whose child was he?"

Rachel opened her bag.

She removed a folded photograph.

"I found this in Eleanor's papers the night before I was taken."

Daniel looked.

A young man stood beside Arthur Reed on a dock.

The photograph was perhaps fifteen years old.

Arthur looked younger.

Beside him stood a man in his early twenties.

Daniel recognized something immediately.

The eyes.

Sophie had those eyes.

On the back Eleanor had written:

Arthur and M.

Daniel whispered, "Michael."

Rachel nodded.

"Why would my father know him?"

"I don't know."

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Arthur had another child?

Impossible.

Caroline was his first.

Daniel his younger son.

Could Michael be another secret child?

Rachel said, "Eleanor's trust notes mention descendants, not just Caroline."

Daniel felt the puzzle shifting.

"Caroline's son."

Rachel looked at him.

"What?"

"Thomas's photograph showed Caroline with a teenage boy."

Daniel's mind raced.

"What if Michael was Caroline's son?"

Rachel went pale.

"He'd be too young."

"Maybe the photograph date was wrong."

"Michael was about twenty-seven when I met him."

"Caroline would have been around forty."

Rachel slowly sat.

"Possible."

If Michael was Caroline's son, then Sophie was Arthur Reed's great-granddaughter.

A direct descendant of the first bloodline.

The succession clause would not end with Caroline.

Sophie would inherit priority after her.

That explained why Richard cared about Sophie.

Daniel felt sick.

"He threatened a child because she's an heir."

Rachel covered her face.

"I brought her into Blackwood."

"You didn't know."

"Eleanor did."

"Maybe that's why she wanted you here."

To protect Sophie.

To keep the missing bloodline close.

Suddenly Daniel remembered how Eleanor treated the child.

Not merely affection.

Recognition.

She had given Sophie gifts from the family collection.

She had insisted Sophie be included in holidays.

She had once joked that Sophie belonged at Blackwood more than anyone.

Daniel thought it was kindness.

Maybe it had been truth.

Maya entered after Daniel called her.

They examined the photograph.

Facial comparison software suggested a likely relationship between Michael and Caroline's teenage son shown years earlier.

Not proof.

But enough to investigate.

Then Maya received another call.

The exhumation order for Arthur's grave had been approved faster than expected due to the criminal investigation.

Results would take time.

Meanwhile Thomas Bell identified the young man in the photograph.

Michael Bennett.

Caroline's son.

Daniel stared.

So it was true.

Michael was his nephew.

Sophie was his grandniece.

Rachel began crying silently.

Daniel sat beside her.

"You didn't know."

"I spent six years thinking her father abandoned us."

"Maybe he was trying to protect you."

"Then why disappear completely?"

They did not know.

But Caroline's letter suggested Arthur had disappeared too.

The same family pattern.

People vanishing to protect others.

Or being forced to vanish.

Daniel returned to Blackwood that evening.

Vanessa had been allowed to collect personal belongings under supervision.

She found Daniel in the foyer.

The same place where she screamed at Sophie.

She looked different without the wedding gown.

Smaller.

Tired.

"Rachel told you about Sophie?"

Daniel stopped.

"You knew?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"My father mentioned a child. He never said Sophie."

"When?"

"Months ago."

"What did he say?"

"He said if the original heir had descendants, the marriage wouldn't solve everything."

Daniel stared.

"And you didn't ask what that meant?"

"I didn't understand."

"You didn't want to."

She accepted that.

"No."

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

"I loved you."

Daniel's expression did not change.

"I think part of you did."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I know that isn't enough."

"No."

"I was jealous of Rachel. I thought she looked at you like she knew you better than I did."

"She knew my family better than either of us."

Vanessa nodded.

"My father knew exactly how to use that."

Daniel wanted to hate her completely.

It would have been easier.

But Vanessa had also been manipulated.

She had still made choices.

She had threatened Rachel.

Deleted footage.

Lied.

She had helped create the danger even if she had not understood its full shape.

Daniel said, "Sophie asked me not to marry the mean lady."

Vanessa laughed through tears.

"Smart girl."

Then she removed something from her bag.

A small sealed envelope.

"My father gave this to me the morning of the wedding."

Daniel did not take it.

"What is it?"

"He told me to open it after we were married."

Daniel finally accepted it.

Inside was a copy of a property transfer.

And a handwritten note from Richard.

Once Daniel signs, contact A.R. immediately.

Daniel stared at the initials.

A.R.

Arthur Reed.

Vanessa whispered, "I thought it meant asset review."

Daniel could not breathe.

"Where was the contact information?"

"On the back."

He turned the paper over.

A phone number.

No name.

Daniel gave it to Maya.

She traced it.

Prepaid.

Active.

Last used two days earlier near the southern coast.

Near the lighthouse.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

Then at the phone number.

If A.R. meant Arthur Reed, his father might not only be alive.

May you like

He might have been communicating with Richard Hale.

And suddenly none of them knew which side Arthur was on.
