Chapter 6 - The Woman Claire Trusted)

They took Lucas to an abandoned clinic instead of a hospital.

Daniel hated every second of it.

Quinn hated it more.

But Evelyn Vale refused to call an ambulance.

"Compass has people watching emergency departments."

Quinn glared at her.

"He's bleeding."

"He'll live."

"He's your son."

"That stopped meaning what you think it means years ago."

Lucas was conscious.

His wound had passed through the upper shoulder.

No artery.

Evelyn cleaned it while Lucas cursed her.

"You always were dramatic, Mom."

She tightened the bandage.

He hissed.

Daniel stood across the room.

"You chained my son."

Lucas looked at him.

Daniel took one step forward.

Quinn intercepted him.

Lucas smiled.

"Kid's tougher than you think."

Daniel pulled against Quinn's arm.

"Daniel."

He stopped.

Barely.

Evelyn looked at her son with disgust.

"Who gave the order?"

Lucas turned away.

"Who?"

"Go to hell."

She pressed two fingers directly against his wound.

Lucas shouted.

"Enough," Quinn said.

Evelyn ignored her.

"Was it Samuel?"

Lucas laughed through the pain.

Samuel stood near the doorway.

"No."

Evelyn looked at him.

Lucas continued.

"Samuel couldn't order lunch without permission anymore."

Daniel looked at Claire's brother.

Samuel said nothing.

"Who sent you?" Daniel asked.

Lucas stared at him.

"The Shepherd."

Quinn frowned.

"Name."

"You think I know his name?"

Evelyn stepped back.

Daniel remembered the files.

"Who is Shepherd?"

Evelyn answered.

"The person who rebuilt Hearthline."

"When?"

"After the original investigation."

"Why doesn't Samuel know?"

Samuel said, "Compass is compartmentalized. Nobody knows everyone."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"And you?"

"I helped create that system."

Silence.

Quinn's eyes hardened.

Evelyn sat opposite them.

"Fourteen years ago, Hearthline was laundering money. That part you know."

Quinn nodded.

"What you didn't know was why."

"Tell me."

"Because the charity was useful."

"For what?"

"Finding vulnerable people."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

Evelyn continued.

"Families in debt. Parents facing custody disputes. People desperate for housing. Business owners behind on taxes. Hearthline learned everything about them."

"Then blackmailed them," Quinn said.

"Sometimes. Other times they bought property cheaply, forced settlements, manipulated court outcomes."

Daniel thought about the files.

"Why children?"

"Leverage."

The word sickened him.

Evelyn noticed.

"Your son was not part of the original operation."

"He became part of it the moment somebody wrapped a chain around him."

"Yes."

Daniel stepped closer.

"So explain Claire."

Evelyn looked toward Lucas.

He laughed quietly.

"Mom loves this part."

Evelyn ignored him.

"Claire discovered a ledger."

"The Northbridge file?"

"Part of it."

"What was in it?"

"Names tying Compass members to current companies, judges, private contractors and police officials."

Daniel felt Quinn tense.

"Claire copied it?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't she publish it?"

"Because then they sent her a photograph of Owen sleeping."

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had seen that photograph on the drive.

Taken through the bedroom window.

Evelyn continued.

"Claire understood exposure alone wouldn't protect her family. She needed leverage and time."

"So she faked her death."

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

Daniel laughed once.

No humor.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because Claire was intelligent."

"She was my wife."

"And that made you a weakness."

The sentence hit him.

Daniel stepped toward Evelyn.

Quinn again moved between them.

Evelyn remained calm.

"If you knew where she went, Compass would have taken Owen and made you tell them."

"They did take Owen."

"Because they thought Claire had broken protocol and contacted you."

Daniel stared.

"Did she?"

Evelyn's eyes moved to the ring inside his hand.

"Apparently."

Daniel looked down.

"She deposited the ring eight months ago."

"Then she was alive eight months ago."

"Lucas says she's alive now."

Everyone looked at him.

Lucas smiled from the clinic bed.

"She is."

Daniel approached.

Quinn did not stop him this time.

"Where did you see her?"

"Six weeks ago."

Daniel's pulse hammered.

"Where?"

"Portland."

"Maine?"

"Oregon."

"What was she doing?"

"Running."

"From you?"

"From everyone."

Daniel leaned closer.

"If you lie to me again, the police won't be your biggest problem."

Lucas studied him.

"She had short hair. Dark jacket. Scar on her left hand."

Daniel's breath caught.

Claire had a burn scar near her thumb from a baking accident.

"She was with someone."

"Who?"

"A girl."

"What girl?"

"Teenager. Maybe fifteen."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She seemed surprised.

Lucas continued.

"Claire saw me. Could've run. Instead she came over."

"Why?"

"She wanted a message delivered."

Daniel's hands trembled.

"What message?"

Lucas smiled.

"She said if I ever touched Owen, she'd kill me."

Daniel stared at him.

Lucas's smile faded.

"I guess I should've listened."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Why didn't you tell Shepherd you saw Claire?"

Lucas turned his face away.

For the first time, he looked conflicted.

Evelyn understood before Daniel did.

"You were protecting her."

Lucas said nothing.

"Why?" Daniel asked.

Lucas looked at him.

"Because your wife saved my life."

Daniel waited.

"Years ago, before the crash. Shepherd ordered me to scare her. I was supposed to make it look like a robbery."

Daniel's fists tightened.

Lucas continued.

"I went into your house."

"When?"

"Three months before she disappeared."

Daniel remembered returning home one night to find the kitchen window broken.

Nothing stolen.

Police called it a failed burglary.

Lucas said, "Claire caught me."

"What did she do?"

"Hit me with a frying pan."

Despite everything, Quinn almost smiled.

Lucas looked toward the ceiling.

"Then she could've called police."

"But?"

"She asked who sent me."

"You told her?"

"Eventually."

"Why?"

"Because she showed me photographs of my mother."

Evelyn's expression changed.

"I had been told she was dead."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She said quietly, "I disappeared when Lucas was nineteen."

"Why?"

"Compass."

Lucas continued.

"Claire proved Mom was alive. She told me Compass had lied to both of us. She let me walk away."

Daniel struggled with the contradictions.

"You owed her."

"Yeah."

"So why attack Owen?"

Lucas's face hardened.

"Because Shepherd found out I had seen Claire in Portland."

"And ordered you to prove loyalty."

Lucas nodded once.

"Get the key."

Daniel's anger returned.

"You could have walked away."

"I tried."

"You chained a seven-year-old boy."

Lucas looked at him.

"I said I owed Claire. I never said I was a good man."

Daniel wanted to hit him.

Instead he asked the only question that mattered.

"What was Claire doing with the girl?"

Lucas closed his eyes.

"Finding the last witness."

Evelyn stopped breathing for a moment.

"What witness?"

Lucas looked at her.

"You really don't know?"

"No."

Lucas laughed quietly.

"Then Claire got further than all of you."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Who was the girl?"

Lucas opened his eyes.

"Her name was Lily."

Daniel waited.

Lucas added, "Lily Bell."

Quinn went pale.

Daniel recognized the surname.

"Howard Bell?"

Evelyn whispered, "His granddaughter."

Lucas nodded.

"The dead commissioner's granddaughter."

"Why is she important?" Daniel asked.

May you like

Lucas looked toward the shuttered window.

"Because before Howard Bell died, he told her the real name of the Shepherd."
