Chapter 13 - The Family Compass Was Built Around)

Daniel wanted to stop listening.
Every answer created another grave that might be empty.
Thomas sat on a metal case beneath the lake.
For the first time in Daniel's memory, his father looked frightened of him.
Not because Daniel might hit him again.
Because of what he had to say.
"Helen discovered who Arthur Mercer was when she was thirty-six."
Daniel remained standing.
"My mother knew she was adopted."
"Yes."
"She never knew her biological father."
"That's what she told you."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
Thomas continued.
"Arthur Mercer created Hearthline with three families."
"Families?"
"Mercer. Bell. Cole. Vale."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Quinn looked at her.
"You knew?"
"Not all of it."
Thomas nodded toward her.
"Evelyn was second generation. Howard Bell too. Richard Cole."
Daniel understood.
"And my mother."
"She was the hidden Mercer heir."
"Why hidden?"
"Arthur didn't trust his partners. He placed Helen for adoption and removed her from public records."
Daniel looked at the succession chart.
"So what does control authority mean?"
Thomas hesitated.
"Arthur set up the original assets through a private trust."
"Money?"
"Properties. Companies. Cash. Later, shell corporations."
Samuel stared.
"How much?"
Thomas looked at him.
"Enough to keep Compass alive for decades."
Daniel's skin crawled.
"And Helen owned it?"
"She had the deciding share."
"Did she know?"
"Eventually."
"What happened?"
"She wanted to dissolve everything."
Daniel's chest tightened.
"So Compass killed her."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
"Then where is she?"
"She died."
Daniel stared.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Thomas looked down.
"She tried to move the trust assets into public charities. Richard and Howard stopped her."
"How?"
"They contaminated her medication."
Daniel felt Quinn move closer.
Thomas continued.
"Slowly."
Daniel's voice barely worked.
"She was poisoned."
"Yes."
"And you knew?"
"Not until the end."
Daniel turned away.
His childhood rearranged itself again.
Hospital rooms.
His mother getting weaker.
Doctors saying treatment had failed.
Thomas drinking in the garage at night.
Daniel had thought his father could not handle grief.
Maybe he had been drowning in guilt.
Thomas said, "Before Helen died, she changed the succession terms."
Daniel turned.
"To me."
"Eventually."
"Eventually?"
"First you. Then any child of yours."
Daniel looked at Owen's file.
"Candidate."
"Yes."
"For control."
"Yes."
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
"My seven-year-old is being hunted because he might inherit a criminal trust?"
"Not inherit."
"What then?"
"Authorize."
Thomas stood.
"The assets can't be fully moved or liquidated without approval from the Mercer line."
Samuel frowned.
"But Daniel is Mercer blood."
Thomas looked at him.
"Daniel's authority was suspended when Compass created a false criminal liability under his name."
Daniel stared.
"What liability?"
"Accounts. Offshore companies. Evidence designed to make it appear Daniel benefited from Hearthline."
Quinn swore.
"So if Daniel attempted to take control, they could discredit or imprison him."
Thomas nodded.
"But Owen is clean."
Daniel understood.
"He's the next valid authority."
Thomas nodded.
Rage spread through Daniel slowly.
"They chained my son because they need his name on something."
"Eventually."
"He's seven."
"The trust activates automatically when he turns eighteen."
"Then why now?"
"Because Claire found a way to accelerate it."
Everyone looked at Thomas.
Daniel stepped closer.
"What did she do?"
"She located Lily Bell."
"Lily knows Shepherd."
"More than that."
Thomas removed a document from inside his coat.
"Lily is Howard Bell's granddaughter."
"We know."
"She is also the last Bell heir."
Evelyn understood first.
"The four families."
Thomas nodded.
"Mercer controls assets. Bell controls records. Vale controls enforcement protocols. Cole controls legal structure."
Quinn looked disgusted.
"A criminal dynasty."
"It became one."
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"And Lucas?"
"Vale blood."
Thomas nodded.
"Which is why Shepherd needed him."
Samuel asked, "What happens if representatives from three lines cooperate?"
Thomas looked at Daniel.
"They can dissolve Compass."
Silence.
Daniel finally understood Claire's plan.
She had Daniel and Owen representing Mercer.
Lily representing Bell.
Lucas representing Vale.
Richard represented Cole but would never cooperate.
Three lines were enough.
Claire had not only been running.
She had been assembling the people who could legally destroy the machine.
Daniel whispered, "She was trying to end it."
Thomas nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why didn't she come to me?"
"Because the Mercer authority required you to remain legally clean and uninvolved until activation."
Daniel laughed angrily.
"So she destroyed our family to protect a technicality."
Thomas's face hardened.
"She protected Owen."
"She broke him."
"She kept him alive."
Daniel stepped close.
"You don't get to defend abandoning a child. You did it too."
Thomas took the words.
"You're right."
That stopped Daniel.
Thomas continued.
"I thought disappearing would protect you. It didn't. It just meant I wasn't there when you needed me."
Daniel stared at his father.
For the first time, Thomas did not sound like a man defending a plan.
He sounded ashamed.
"I won't ask you to forgive me," Thomas said.
"Good."
"But don't make my mistake."
"What mistake?"
"Don't confuse protecting Owen with deciding his entire life for him."
Daniel thought of Owen asking to come to the lake.
Mom did that too.
The words hurt.
Quinn picked up the succession document.
"How do we dissolve Compass?"
Thomas looked toward the deepest storage case.
"We need the original trust charter."
"Where?"
"Claire has it."
Daniel's heart sank.
"Of course she does."
Thomas continued.
"And Lily has Bell's authorization."
"Lucas?"
"Evelyn can transfer Vale authority to him."
Evelyn frowned.
"He'd have to accept."
"He will."
"How do you know?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Because Claire already convinced him."
Daniel thought of Lucas letting Claire walk away years earlier.
Maybe that debt went deeper.
Samuel asked, "Where are Claire and Lily?"
Thomas looked at Daniel.
"I was with them this morning."
Daniel moved.
"Where?"
"An old church outside Ashford."
"Are they still there?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Claire saw Richard's arrest."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"Richard said she wouldn't come home even after his arrest."
"Because Richard isn't the board."
"Who is?"
Thomas looked toward the entrance.
"The board meets tonight."
Quinn stared.
"Where?"
"Northbridge Civic Museum."
Samuel laughed once.
"There's a charity gala tonight."
"Exactly."
Daniel understood.
Public place.
Important people.
Security.
Perfect camouflage.
Thomas continued.
"Claire plans to go."
"Why?"
"To identify every remaining board member."
"That's insane."
"Yes."
"Stop her."
Thomas looked at Daniel.
"I tried."
"And?"
"She's Claire."
Despite everything, Daniel almost smiled.
That sounded like his wife.
Then Thomas's expression changed.
"There's another problem."
"What?"
"Claire doesn't know Shepherd has Lily's younger brother."
Daniel froze.
"Lily has a brother?"
"Nine years old."
"Where?"
"Compass found him yesterday."
Daniel felt sick.
"They'll trade him for Lily."
Thomas nodded.
"And if Claire goes to that museum without knowing, she walks into a trap."
Daniel reached for his jacket.
Quinn stopped him.
"Daniel."
"My wife is walking into a trap."
"We need a plan."
Daniel looked at his father.
"Did Claire leave anything for me?"
Thomas hesitated.
Then handed him a folded note.
Daniel opened it.
Only one sentence.
Danny, if you still know me, you know where I'll stand when the room becomes dangerous.
Daniel stared.
Quinn asked, "What does it mean?"
Daniel already knew.
At every crowded event they attended during twelve years of marriage, Claire had the same habit.
She hated being trapped.
She always stood near the second exit.
Never the main door.
The second one.
May you like
Daniel folded the note.
"I know where she'll be."
