Chapter 5 - The Brother Outside the Door)

Quinn motioned Daniel away from the entrance.
Her gun remained aimed at the door.
"Samuel," she called. "Put your hands where I can see them and step backward."
Samuel laughed without humor.
"There's a steel door between us."
"Then you'll have no trouble following instructions."
Daniel moved beside the wall.
"How did you find us?"
Silence.
Then Samuel said, "Because the storage manager works for them."
Quinn glanced at Daniel.
Samuel continued.
"You had maybe twenty minutes from the moment that drawer opened."
"Who are they?" Daniel demanded.
"You already know enough to be in danger."
"My son was chained to the floor."
Samuel's voice changed.
"I know."
"You knew Lucas."
"Yes."
Daniel closed his eyes.
That single admission made the last two days suddenly feel real in a new way.
"You lied in my house."
"I've lied to you for years."
"Why?"
"Because Claire asked me to."
Daniel stepped toward the door.
Quinn raised one hand, stopping him.
"Did you fake her death?"
Samuel did not answer immediately.
Daniel slammed his fist against the steel.
"Did you fake my wife's death?"
"Yes."
The word echoed.
Daniel's throat tightened.
Quinn's expression became unreadable.
Samuel continued.
"Open the door."
"No."
"You can hate me after we're alive."
"You let me bury an empty coffin."
"It wasn't empty."
Daniel went still.
Quinn frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Samuel said, "Someone died in that crash."
Daniel felt sick.
"Who?"
"No time."
"Who was in my wife's coffin?"
"Daniel, listen to me. Lucas didn't escape because he was lucky. He escaped because somebody wanted him free. If he knows you're here, this place is already compromised."
Quinn looked at her phone.
No signal.
She swore quietly.
Daniel looked toward the ventilation grate.
"How many exits?"
Quinn checked the room.
"One."
Samuel spoke again.
"There's a maintenance corridor behind Box 300."
Quinn looked at the steel wall.
"How do you know?"
"Because Claire used it."
Daniel stared at the boxes.
Samuel continued.
"Remove 301 and 302. The panel behind them opens inward."
Quinn did not move.
Daniel did.
They pulled the two narrow drawers free.
Behind them was a rectangular metal plate.
Daniel pressed.
It shifted.
A dark passage appeared.
Quinn looked at the door.
"You first," she called to Samuel.
"Gladly."
A moment later, footsteps moved away outside.
Daniel packed the drive, folder and letter into Quinn's evidence bag.
He kept Claire's ring in his pocket.
Quinn noticed.
This time she said nothing.
They crawled through the opening.
The maintenance corridor was narrow and dusty.
At the far end, Samuel waited with both hands raised.
Quinn aimed her gun at him.
Samuel looked older than Daniel remembered.
Not physically.
Tired.
Defeated.
"Keep your hands where I can see them."
"Fine."
Daniel stepped forward.
Then punched him.
Samuel hit the wall.
Quinn grabbed Daniel's arm.
"Enough."
Daniel pulled free.
"You let my son grieve for two years."
Samuel touched his lip.
"I know."
"You watched him put a toy airplane on that coffin."
Samuel closed his eyes.
"I know."
Daniel moved toward him again.
Quinn stepped between them.
"If you want answers, let him speak."
Daniel's breathing was heavy.
Samuel looked at him.
"Claire discovered Hearthline never really died. It became something else."
"The Compass Circle."
Samuel's expression sharpened.
"You opened the drive."
"Who are they?"
"Businessmen. Lawyers. police. Judges. Social workers. Contractors. People who learned that controlling desperate families was profitable."
"What were they doing?"
"Buying distressed properties. Manipulating custody cases. Laundering money through emergency housing programs. Blackmailing people whose secrets they collected."
Daniel stared.
"And you helped them?"
"At first."
Quinn's voice hardened.
"At first?"
Samuel looked at her.
"I was twenty-three when Hearthline recruited me. They paid my law school loans. Gave me clients. Introduced me to judges."
"You knew families were being hurt."
"Not initially."
"When did you know?"
Samuel said nothing.
Quinn stepped closer.
"When?"
"Too late."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"That's convenient."
Samuel looked at him.
"Claire found out because of me."
Daniel's anger paused.
"Explain."
"She was doing bookkeeping for one of my real estate companies. She saw transfers I thought I had hidden."
"Claire was a school counselor."
"She helped me with taxes."
Daniel remembered.
One weekend.
Three years ago.
Claire had spent two days organizing Samuel's company records.
She had complained afterward that he needed a real accountant.
Daniel had forgotten.
Samuel continued.
"She found payments connected to Hearthline."
"So she investigated."
"She confronted me first."
"What did you tell her?"
"The truth."
"Why?"
Samuel looked away.
"Because she was my sister."
Daniel almost struck him again.
"You don't get to use that word."
Samuel accepted it.
"Claire wanted to go to police. I told her police were part of it."
"Quinn wasn't."
"I didn't know whether Mara was still clean."
Quinn's jaw tightened.
Samuel continued.
"Claire kept digging. She found the Compass files. Then they noticed."
"They threatened Owen."
"Yes."
Daniel's hands curled.
"Who?"
Samuel looked at him.
"I never knew the highest name."
"Claire said it was someone I know."
Samuel hesitated.
"I know."
"Who?"
"She never told me."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
Daniel stepped close enough that their faces were inches apart.
"You lied about my wife's death. You lied at her funeral. You knew she was alive. Why should I believe anything?"
Samuel whispered, "Because I helped her disappear."
The anger inside Daniel shifted into something colder.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Don't."
"That's the truth. Claire insisted."
"How did you fake the crash?"
Samuel leaned against the wall.
"We knew they were watching her car. We needed them to believe she died before they acted against Owen."
Quinn asked, "Who died?"
Samuel's face changed.
"A woman named Elise Warren."
Daniel did not recognize it.
Samuel continued.
"She worked for Hearthline. She wanted out. They were going to kill her anyway."
Daniel stared.
"You used her body?"
"No. We didn't plan it that way."
"What happened?"
Samuel swallowed.
"Elise was supposed to drive Claire's car to an abandoned warehouse. Claire would disappear separately. But someone followed Elise."
"The crash."
Samuel nodded.
"They hit the car on Route 9. It went through the barrier and burned."
Quinn said, "And you identified Elise as Claire."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because the people who caused the crash needed to believe they'd succeeded."
Daniel's voice shook.
"And the police?"
"Howard Bell altered the records."
Quinn froze.
"Bell?"
Samuel nodded.
"He was still alive then."
"But Bell was Compass."
"He was."
"Why would he help Claire?"
"Because somebody inside Compass had started eliminating old members. Bell wanted insurance."
Daniel struggled to process it.
"So everyone was betraying everyone."
"That's what organizations like Compass become eventually."
A sound echoed from behind them.
Metal striking metal.
Samuel's face drained.
"We need to move."
Quinn raised her gun.
"Lucas?"
"Probably."
They hurried down the passage.
At the end was a metal staircase leading to an alley.
Samuel pushed open the door.
Daylight.
A black SUV waited across the street.
Daniel stopped.
"Is that yours?"
"No."
The driver's door opened.
Lucas Vane stepped out.
His jaw was swollen from Daniel's punch.
In his right hand was a pistol.
"Give me the drive."
Quinn aimed.
Lucas smiled.
"Detective."
"Drop it."
"You first."
Samuel whispered, "There's another man behind us."
Daniel heard footsteps in the passage.
They were trapped between Lucas and whoever was approaching from behind.
Lucas looked at Daniel.
"Where's the boy?"
Daniel's fear became rage.
"Say another word about my son."
Lucas lifted the gun slightly.
"Claire made this complicated. It didn't need to be."
Daniel reached slowly toward his jacket.
Lucas saw.
"Don't."
Daniel's fingers closed around Claire's wedding ring.
He held it up.
Lucas stared.
Daniel watched his expression.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
"You've seen this before," Daniel said.
Lucas said nothing.
"You've seen Claire."
Samuel turned toward him.
Lucas's smile returned.
"More recently than any of you."
Daniel's heartbeat thundered.
"Where is she?"
Lucas looked directly at him.
"Alive."
A gunshot exploded from the passage behind them.
Lucas dropped.
Not dead.
Hit in the shoulder.
Quinn pulled Daniel behind the wall.
Samuel ducked.
The black SUV accelerated away without Lucas.
A second figure emerged from the passage.
An older woman holding a gun.
Quinn aimed at her.
The woman raised her empty hand.
"Mara."
Quinn froze.
Daniel looked between them.
"You know her?"
Quinn's face had gone completely white.
The woman lowered the gun.
"My name is Evelyn Vale."
Daniel looked at Lucas lying wounded in the alley.
Vale.
The same surname.
Evelyn glanced at him.
"Lucas is my son."
Daniel stared.
May you like
She continued.
"And Claire sent me to keep you alive."
