Chapter 14 - The Night the Compass Broke)

The Northbridge Civic Museum glittered with light.

Luxury cars lined the circular drive.

Politicians.

Judges.

Corporate executives.

Donors.

Reporters.

The gala celebrated the opening of a new family services wing.

Daniel almost laughed at the cruelty of it.

Half the people arriving had probably supported the same system that terrorized vulnerable families for decades.

Quinn coordinated federal agents outside.

Not local police.

No one knew which officers could be trusted.

Samuel entered using his invitation.

He had attended Compass events for years without understanding their true structure.

Evelyn entered through catering access.

Thomas disappeared before they arrived.

Daniel hated that.

His father said he had another job.

Wouldn't explain.

Some things had not changed.

Daniel wore a black suit borrowed from Quinn's prosecutor friend.

He entered alone.

The museum's main atrium was full.

He scanned faces.

Then doors.

Main entrance behind him.

Service corridor left.

Emergency stairwell right.

Second exit.

Claire would choose the east gallery.

Daniel moved.

He saw Richard Cole nowhere.

Still in federal custody.

But Richard had been one branch.

The board remained.

Daniel entered the east gallery.

Paintings.

Soft music.

Guests holding champagne.

Then he saw her.

Claire.

Twenty feet away.

Alive.

For two years Daniel had practiced conversations with a dead woman.

He had spoken to her photograph.

Her grave.

The empty side of the bed.

None prepared him for the way she looked at him now.

Claire stopped moving.

Her glass slipped slightly in her hand.

Daniel forgot Compass.

He forgot Quinn.

He forgot the museum.

He walked toward her.

Claire whispered, "Danny."

He stopped three feet away.

She looked thinner than in the station video.

There was a faint scar near her temple.

Same brown eyes.

Same way she pressed her lips together when trying not to cry.

Daniel had imagined this moment with anger.

Instead he reached out and touched her face.

Claire closed her eyes.

Then Daniel pulled her into his arms.

She broke.

He felt it.

Two years of control disappeared against his chest.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel held her tighter.

"I'm so sorry."

He could not speak.

When he finally pulled back, anger returned exactly where love had left space for it.

"Owen thinks you abandoned him."

Claire's face crumpled.

"I know."

"He asks why you didn't trust him."

"He was five."

"He was your son."

"I know."

"You let him bury you."

Tears ran down her face.

"I know."

Daniel wanted to shout.

Instead he whispered, "You don't get to say I know like it fixes anything."

"It doesn't."

"Then why?"

Claire looked around the gallery.

"Not here."

"Richard is arrested."

"Richard is replaceable."

"Who is board?"

Claire glanced toward the atrium.

"Seven people."

"Names."

"Four are here."

"Who?"

Claire hesitated.

Daniel stepped closer.

"No more secrets."

Her eyes met his.

"Judge Malcolm Hayes."

Daniel knew him.

Family court.

"Dr. Rebecca Cole."

Richard's sister.

"Senator Anthony Ward."

Daniel felt sick.

"And?"

Claire looked toward the far side of the gallery.

An elderly man stood speaking with donors.

Daniel recognized him.

Everyone did.

Charles Mercer.

Billionaire philanthropist.

Founder of three hospitals.

Chairman of the Mercer Community Trust.

No known relation to Daniel.

At least none Daniel had ever known.

Claire whispered, "Arthur Mercer's oldest surviving son."

Daniel stared.

"My mother's brother."

"Yes."

"My uncle."

"Yes."

"He's running Compass?"

"Not exactly."

Daniel looked at her.

"Then what?"

"He's protecting the structure because he believes the Mercer assets belong to him."

"Why Owen?"

"Because Owen's claim outranks his."

Daniel's fists tightened.

Claire touched his arm.

"Daniel, Lily's brother is here."

"Thomas told me."

Claire's face changed.

"When?"

"At Lake Carver."

"You saw Thomas?"

"That's a long conversation."

Claire almost laughed through her tears.

"Yes."

Daniel looked around.

"Where is Lily?"

"Upper gallery."

"Lucas?"

"Federal custody."

"Not anymore."

Claire stared.

Daniel explained.

"Quinn arranged a supervised transfer. Evelyn is bringing him."

Claire exhaled.

"Then we might still have a chance."

"To dissolve Compass?"

She looked at him sharply.

"Thomas told you."

"He told me everything."

"No, he didn't."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"What did he leave out?"

Before she could answer, applause began in the atrium.

Charles Mercer stepped onto a small stage.

Claire whispered, "Too late."

"For what?"

"He knows we're here."

Charles lifted a microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen."

His warm public voice filled the museum.

"Tonight is about family."

Daniel felt Claire grip his hand.

Charles continued.

"About protecting children."

The hypocrisy was almost unbearable.

Then the east gallery doors closed.

Security guards moved into position.

Claire looked at Daniel.

"Those aren't museum guards."

Daniel touched the concealed communication device in his sleeve.

"Quinn."

Static.

Jammed.

Claire looked toward the service exit.

"Second door."

They moved.

A guard blocked it.

Daniel struck first.

Fast.

Claire grabbed the man's access card.

They ran into the service corridor.

Behind them, alarms began.

Not fire alarms.

Security lockdown.

Daniel and Claire reached the stairwell.

Lily waited one floor above.

Fifteen years old.

Dark hair.

Green backpack.

Beside her was Evelyn.

And Lucas.

Lucas looked at Daniel.

"No chains this time."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Don't test me."

Lucas nodded.

Fair.

Lily stepped forward.

"Where's Noah?"

Claire looked at Daniel.

"Lily's brother."

Daniel understood.

"Noah is here somewhere."

Evelyn held out documents.

"Vale authorization is ready."

Lily removed a small metal case from her backpack.

"Bell authorization."

Claire looked at Daniel.

"We need Mercer."

Daniel shook his head.

"Owen isn't here."

"You."

"Thomas said I'm legally compromised."

Claire reached inside her coat.

She handed him a document.

"Not anymore."

Daniel read.

The false accounts under his name had been exposed and invalidated months earlier.

Claire had cleared him.

"You did this?"

"I've been working for two years."

Daniel stared at her.

"You could've sent this."

"If Compass knew your authority was restored, they would have taken Owen sooner."

Again.

A choice made for him.

But there was no time.

"How do we activate?"

"Trust terminal in Charles's private office."

"Of course he has one here."

"This museum sits on Mercer trust property."

Lucas laughed quietly.

"Rich people love symbolism."

They moved.

Federal agents finally breached the west entrance.

Gunfire was avoided because the museum remained full of civilians.

Compass security tried to evacuate board members through underground parking.

Quinn intercepted Judge Hayes.

Samuel stopped Rebecca Cole by locking an elevator remotely.

Evelyn confronted one of her former Compass associates near the archive room.

Daniel, Claire, Lily and Lucas reached Charles Mercer's office.

Charles was already there.

Calm.

Waiting.

Beside him stood a frightened nine-year-old boy.

Noah Bell.

Charles rested one hand on the boy's shoulder.

Lily gasped.

"Noah."

The boy started crying.

Charles looked at Daniel.

"Family reunions everywhere tonight."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Let him go."

Charles smiled.

"You have Helen's eyes."

Daniel hated hearing it.

"My mother tried to destroy you."

"Your mother was emotional."

"You poisoned her."

Charles's smile disappeared.

"Richard did."

Claire whispered, "He's lying."

Charles looked at her.

"Still brave."

"Still old."

Lucas almost smiled.

Charles ignored him.

"You believe pressing a few signatures into a trust terminal destroys Compass?"

Lily raised her authorization case.

"It destroys your financial control."

"Money is replaceable."

Claire answered, "Not this money."

Charles looked at her.

Claire continued.

"Every shell company is cross-collateralized. Dissolve the founding trust and the network freezes automatically."

For the first time, Charles looked concerned.

Daniel saw it.

Charles tightened his hand on Noah's shoulder.

"Then Lily won't sign."

Lily stepped forward.

"Yes, I will."

"He gets hurt."

Noah sobbed.

Daniel's vision narrowed.

A child used as leverage.

Again.

Exactly how Compass had survived.

Threaten the child.

Control the adult.

Daniel looked at Lucas.

Lucas looked back.

Something passed between them.

Lucas moved first.

He kicked a chair into Charles's security guard.

Claire pulled Noah away.

Daniel tackled Charles.

Lily ran to the terminal.

Alarms screamed.

Evelyn entered and restrained the second guard.

Lucas was struck in the shoulder where he had been wounded earlier.

He fell.

Daniel wrestled Charles against the desk.

The older man was stronger than expected.

Charles hissed, "You think you're different from us?"

Daniel slammed his hand away from a concealed pistol.

"Yes."

"Your father killed for Compass."

"I'm not my father."

"Your wife lied to her child."

Daniel froze half a second.

Charles used it.

He struck Daniel.

Claire shouted.

Daniel recovered and drove Charles against the wall.

"Don't talk about my family."

Behind them, Lily inserted her Bell authorization.

Evelyn helped Lucas stand.

He pressed his thumb to the Vale terminal.

Accepted.

Claire looked at Daniel.

"Your turn."

Daniel released Charles.

The older man collapsed beside the desk.

Daniel approached the terminal.

MERCER AUTHORITY.

The screen requested confirmation.

Daniel placed his hand on the scanner.

A message appeared.

SUCCESSION VERIFIED.

Then another.

DISSOLVE FOUNDING CONTROL STRUCTURE?

Daniel looked at Claire.

At Lily holding her brother.

At Lucas bleeding beside his mother.

At Charles Mercer on the floor.

At decades of secrets.

He pressed YES.

The terminal processed.

Charles laughed.

Daniel turned.

"What?"

Charles shook his head.

"You really don't know."

The screen flashed.

DISSOLUTION ACCEPTED.

Claire closed her eyes.

Relief.

Then another message appeared.

SECONDARY AUTHORITY REQUIRED.

Everyone stared.

Daniel looked at Claire.

"What secondary authority?"

She went pale.

"I don't know."

Charles laughed again.

"Arthur Mercer always planned for betrayal."

Daniel grabbed him.

"Who is the secondary authority?"

Charles smiled through a split lip.

"The Shepherd."

Daniel stared.

"Richard?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Charles looked toward the doorway.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Heavy.

Familiar.

Thomas Reed entered.

Daniel released Charles.

His father carried a black case.

Claire whispered, "Thomas?"

Thomas looked at the terminal.

Then at Daniel.

"I'm sorry, son."

Daniel felt the world tilt again.

Thomas opened the case.

Inside was a silver compass.

Not a pin.

An original engraved compass.

May you like

Charles smiled.

"Meet the Shepherd."
