Chapter 4 - A Dead Woman's Wedding Ring)

Daniel did not touch the ring at first.

He stared at it.

There were tiny scratches along the inner edge from years of wear.

One came from the time Claire had caught her hand against a metal fence while chasing Owen's escaped puppy.

Daniel remembered taking the ring to a jeweler.

Claire had refused to let them polish the scratch away.

"It's part of the story now," she had said.

There was no mistake.

This was her ring.

Quinn put on gloves.

"Daniel, we need to treat everything inside as evidence."

"My wife wore that for ten years."

"I know."

"She was buried with it."

Quinn looked at him.

"You're sure?"

Daniel almost laughed.

"I dressed her body for the viewing."

The words sounded impossible even as he said them.

He had not literally dressed Claire himself, but he had chosen everything.

Her dark blue dress.

The necklace Owen made in kindergarten.

Her wedding ring.

Daniel had stood beside the open coffin.

He remembered touching her fingers.

Cold fingers.

The ring had been there.

Hadn't it?

He pressed a hand to his forehead.

Grief had turned those days into fragments.

Quinn took photographs.

Then she carefully lifted the red folder.

Inside were financial records.

Property transfers.

Copies of court orders.

Lists of names.

Dates.

Dozens of photographs.

Daniel flipped through them.

Many showed Samuel.

Some showed men Daniel did not recognize.

Others showed families.

Children.

Houses.

"What is this?"

Quinn scanned a document.

"These are old Hearthline files."

"I thought the investigation ended fourteen years ago."

"So did I."

She turned another page.

"These are recent."

One document was dated five months earlier.

Daniel stared.

"Hearthline closed."

"The public charity did."

Quinn pointed to a company name.

"Hearthline Asset Management."

Daniel had never heard of it.

Quinn continued scanning.

"Same initials. Different legal structure."

Daniel picked up the envelope beneath Claire's ring.

On the front was his name.

Daniel.

Nothing else.

He opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

He recognized Claire's writing immediately.

Danny,

If you are reading this, the first plan failed.

Daniel sat down hard on the narrow bench behind him.

Quinn did not speak.

He kept reading.

I need you to believe one thing before everything else.

I never left because I stopped loving you.

I left because they learned about Owen.

Daniel's hand trembled.

He forced himself onward.

Samuel is involved, but he is not the person in control.

Do not confront him until you know who wears the compass.

There are more of them than I understood.

If Lucas Vane has come near our family, then they found the Northbridge file.

Take Owen somewhere safe.

Do not go to the police unless you find Mara Quinn.

She tried to stop them once.

She may be the only one who understands what Hearthline became.

Daniel slowly looked at Quinn.

She had gone pale.

"She named you."

Quinn took the letter.

Daniel let her read.

The next paragraph hurt worse.

I know what you believe happened to me.

I am sorry.

One day I hope I can explain why the lie was necessary.

If I failed, please tell Owen that the last true thing I ever said to him was that I loved him.

Daniel could no longer see clearly.

For two years he had lived inside grief.

He had woken reaching for someone who was not there.

He had watched Owen cry himself to sleep.

He had stood at a grave every November.

And Claire had written this after she was supposedly dead.

Anger came before hope.

It came because hope was too dangerous.

Daniel crumpled the edge of the paper.

"She let us believe she was dead."

Quinn said nothing.

"She let our son believe his mother was dead."

"We don't know the circumstances."

"She wrote this eight months ago."

"We don't know when she entered it."

Daniel pointed to the storage receipt.

"Eight months."

Quinn looked again.

She could not argue.

Daniel stood.

"If she's alive, where is she?"

"We need the flash drive."

Quinn plugged it into an isolated laptop from her bag.

Encrypted.

A password screen appeared.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

There was a hint.

The place where the sky turned green.

Daniel knew immediately.

"Iceland."

Quinn looked at him.

Daniel typed REYKJAVIK.

Wrong.

He tried NORTHERNLIGHTS.

Wrong.

Then he remembered their honeymoon.

Claire had wanted Iceland.

They could not afford it.

Instead, Daniel drove her to a cheap planetarium show in Boston where artificial northern lights moved across the ceiling.

Afterward they had eaten terrible pizza beside a fountain.

Claire called it their budget Iceland.

The planetarium had been called Aurora Hall.

Daniel typed AURORA.

The drive unlocked.

Folders appeared.

Hearthline.

Samuel.

Bell.

Vale.

Compass.

Claire.

Owen.

Daniel clicked Owen.

Quinn stopped him.

"Maybe I should."

"No."

Inside were surveillance photographs.

Owen leaving school.

Owen at a playground.

Owen asleep in the back seat of Daniel's car.

Daniel felt physically sick.

The earliest photograph was dated three weeks before Claire's death.

"They were watching him."

Quinn nodded.

Daniel opened the Compass folder.

It contained photographs of silver pins like the one Samuel wore.

Documents referred to something called the Compass Circle.

No membership list.

Only initials.

S.B.

H.B.

R.C.

E.V.

M.K.

Daniel pointed.

"Samuel Bennett. Howard Bell."

"Probably."

"Who are the others?"

"I don't know."

The last file was a video.

Daniel clicked it.

Claire appeared on the screen.

Alive.

Her hair was shorter than when she died.

She sat in a room with a blank wall behind her.

The recording date showed eleven months earlier.

Daniel's heart stopped.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"If Daniel is watching this, then Lucas found the house."

Daniel and Quinn exchanged a look.

Claire continued.

"That means Samuel failed to contain him."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Samuel is guilty of terrible things. But listen carefully. He is also afraid."

Claire took a breath.

"The person controlling Hearthline is someone Daniel knows."

The screen flickered.

Claire glanced off camera.

For the first time she looked frightened.

"If I name that person and this file is intercepted, Owen dies."

Daniel whispered, "Claire."

On the screen, his wife continued.

"Look at the original police report from my accident. Not the copy Daniel received. The original."

Then the video ended.

Quinn stared at the black screen.

Daniel looked at her.

"You investigated the accident."

"No."

"You were a detective in the same department."

"I was transferred to financial crimes by then."

"Who handled it?"

Quinn's expression changed.

Daniel saw the answer before she spoke.

"Samuel."

"Samuel wasn't a cop."

"No."

Quinn turned the laptop toward him.

"He wasn't the investigator."

"Then what?"

"He was the person who identified Claire's body."

Daniel felt the room tilt.

He had arrived at the hospital two hours after the crash.

Samuel had already been there.

The doctors told Daniel the injuries were severe.

They advised him against seeing Claire until the funeral home had prepared her.

Samuel had held Daniel in the hospital corridor and said three words.

It's really her.

Daniel had believed him.

Because Samuel was Claire's brother.

Quinn closed the laptop.

"We need the original accident file."

Daniel reached for Claire's ring.

Quinn stopped him gently.

"We log it."

"I'm taking it."

"Daniel."

"My son lost his mother because of whatever this is."

"If Claire is alive, that ring is evidence of how she created the illusion."

Daniel looked at it again.

A tiny engraving inside read D and C Always.

Then someone knocked on the steel door of the storage room.

Three slow knocks.

Quinn immediately reached for her gun.

Daniel turned.

No one should have known they were there.

A voice came from the corridor.

"Daniel."

He recognized it.

May you like

Samuel.

"You need to open the door before Mara gets both of you killed."
