Chapter 11 - Claire Came Back)

For eighteen hours, Daniel did not know whether the call had been real.
The voice was Claire's.
He knew it.
But after false deaths, altered evidence and manufactured identities, certainty had become a luxury.
Quinn traced the call.
Burner phone.
Northbridge tower.
Signal vanished immediately afterward.
Thomas was careful.
Claire was more careful.
Daniel sent one message to the number.
Owen is safe.
Nothing else.
Five hours passed.
Then a reply.
Yellow airplane.
Daniel stared.
At Claire's funeral, Owen had placed a yellow toy airplane on the coffin.
Very few people knew.
Daniel typed:
Where are you?
No response.
Then:
Is Claire with you?
Nothing.
Finally:
Owen thinks you are alive.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
A message came.
Tell him I am sorry.
Daniel's anger surged.
He typed:
Tell him yourself.
No reply.
Quinn watched him.
"Don't push too hard."
Daniel looked at her.
"She has been gone two years."
"If she's hiding while actively pursued, one wrong message could expose her."
"She abandoned her son."
"Maybe."
Daniel stared.
Quinn continued.
"Or she chose what she believed was the only way to keep him alive."
"Those aren't different things to a seven-year-old."
"No."
That evening, federal agents arrested Vanessa Cole.
Not for giving Daniel's travel schedule.
For financial conspiracy.
Quinn had followed the account numbers from Claire's drive.
Vanessa had moved money for Richard.
For years.
Under questioning, she finally admitted Richard was alive.
"He came back after the funeral."
Daniel watched through glass again.
Vanessa cried.
"He told me his death was temporary."
Quinn asked, "Why fake it?"
"Because Claire had started asking questions."
"So Richard disappeared first."
"Yes."
"Where has he been?"
"I don't know."
"How does he contact you?"
"Different phones."
"What is Compass?"
Vanessa looked down.
"My husband called it insurance."
"For what?"
"Power."
Quinn waited.
Vanessa continued.
"People joined because Compass could make problems disappear. Divorce. Lawsuits. criminal investigations. Debt. Bad press."
"In exchange for what?"
"Favors."
"Illegal favors?"
"Sometimes."
"People died."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"Did Richard order Claire killed?"
"No."
Daniel leaned toward the glass.
Quinn asked, "What did he order?"
"Bring her in."
"Why?"
"She had copied the registry."
Daniel looked at Samuel.
The registry.
Not just financial records.
Membership.
Quinn asked, "Where is it?"
"Claire took it."
"Is it under Lake Carver?"
Vanessa looked confused.
"No."
Daniel exchanged a glance with Quinn.
Another archive existed.
"What did Claire do with it?"
"I don't know."
"Did Richard?"
"No."
Vanessa's voice cracked.
"That's why he never stopped looking."
Daniel understood.
The blue key.
Box 317.
Lake Carver.
All decoys or partial evidence.
Claire had hidden the real membership registry somewhere else.
Vanessa whispered, "Richard thinks Lily knows."
Quinn asked, "Where is Richard?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"Then help us find him."
"He'll kill my daughter."
"Your daughter is in federal protection."
Vanessa looked up sharply.
Quinn slid a photograph across the table.
Vanessa's daughter entering a secure federal building.
Alive.
Safe.
Vanessa broke.
Richard maintained three fallback properties.
One was an abandoned summer camp outside Northbridge.
The camp had been operated by Hearthline fifteen years earlier.
Daniel almost laughed when Quinn told him.
"Everything comes back to Hearthline."
"Criminal organizations love property they already control."
Federal agents surrounded the camp before dawn.
Daniel was not allowed inside.
He hated that.
But Owen was with him in the command vehicle.
That mattered more.
At 5:42 a.m., agents entered.
At 5:51, Quinn radioed.
"We have Richard."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Owen looked up from the blanket wrapped around him.
"Is that good?"
"Maybe."
Richard Cole was led from the main lodge in handcuffs.
He was sixty-three.
Thin.
White hair.
Completely ordinary.
That was the worst part.
Daniel remembered backyard barbecues.
Richard teaching Owen to throw a football.
Richard standing beside Claire's coffin with tears in his eyes.
The man had attended the funeral of a woman he knew was alive.
Richard saw Daniel through the command vehicle window.
He smiled.
Daniel stepped outside.
Agents moved between them.
Richard spoke first.
"You look like Thomas."
Daniel's fists curled.
"Don't say his name."
"He was always sentimental about you."
"Where is Claire?"
Richard laughed.
"Everyone asks me that."
"Where is she?"
"If I knew, we wouldn't be here."
Daniel studied him.
Richard looked calm.
Too calm for a man facing federal conspiracy charges.
"You don't care that you were arrested."
Richard smiled.
"An organization built on judges and prosecutors doesn't fear courtrooms."
Quinn approached.
"You should."
Richard looked at her.
"Mara Quinn. Still angry after fourteen years."
"Still breathing too."
"For now."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who is above you?"
Richard's smile faded slightly.
"So Thomas finally explained."
"Not enough."
"He never does."
"Who is the board?"
Richard looked at Owen inside the vehicle.
Daniel immediately blocked his view.
Richard said, "Your son has Claire's eyes."
Daniel moved.
Two agents restrained him.
"Don't look at him."
Richard smiled again.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The Reed temper."
Quinn ordered agents to move Richard.
As they led him away, he called back.
"Ask Claire why she never came home after I was arrested."
Daniel froze.
May you like
Richard laughed.
"Ask her who she's really hiding from."
