Chapter 9 - the name on the birth certificate

Margaret read the sentence again.

You were watching the wrong mother.

Adrian took the copied notebook.

"What does this mean?"

No one answered.

Ellen asked, "Mom, what have you gotten involved in?"

Margaret touched her daughter's arm.

"I don't know."

That was the frightening truth.

Detective Ortiz arrived thirty minutes later.

She placed the envelope inside an evidence bag.

"No prints visible."

Adrian paced.

"Wrong mother."

Ortiz looked at him.

"Is there any question regarding Noah's maternity?"

"No."

"Was he conceived naturally?"

Adrian hesitated.

Margaret noticed.

Ortiz repeated, "Mr. Cole?"

Adrian sat down.

"We used IVF."

Vanessa had suffered two miscarriages.

After several fertility treatments, they used an embryo created from Adrian's sperm and Vanessa's egg.

At least that was what Adrian had always believed.

Ortiz asked, "Do you have the records?"

"Somewhere."

Daniel immediately contacted the fertility clinic.

The clinic had changed ownership two years earlier, but archives remained.

The next morning they received confirmation that records existed.

But access required legal authorization.

Adrian signed everything.

Hours later, the clinic called.

There was a problem.

One page in Vanessa's file did not match the digital database.

The physical record listed one embryo identification number.

The laboratory archive listed another.

Adrian stared at Daniel.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel replied, "We don't know yet."

Margaret looked toward Noah.

The boy sat on the floor building a tower.

Adrian whispered, "Could Noah not be Vanessa's biological child?"

Daniel said, "Do not jump ahead."

But everyone already had.

A court approved expedited genetic testing because of the active custody case.

Adrian submitted a sample.

Noah submitted a sample.

Vanessa refused.

Her attorney argued there was no legal basis.

The judge ordered compliance.

Vanessa finally submitted.

Forty eight hours later, the results arrived.

Adrian opened them with shaking hands.

Probability of paternity exceeded 99.99 percent.

He was Noah's biological father.

Then he reached the second page.

Probability that Vanessa Cole was Noah's biological mother.

0.00 percent.

Adrian did not move.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel reread the page.

"This needs independent confirmation."

They repeated the test.

Same result.

Vanessa was not Noah's biological mother.

The custody case exploded.

Vanessa claimed the clinic had made an error.

Adrian believed that at first too.

Then Ortiz recovered data from Claire's damaged phone.

Most of it was corrupted.

One voice memo survived.

Claire's voice sounded distant.

Breathing quickly.

"If anything happens to me, check the fertility trust."

The recording continued.

"Vanessa cannot have what Robert promised her unless there is a biological Cole heir."

Adrian stopped breathing.

The words made no sense.

Noah was his biological child.

That made Noah a Cole heir.

Why would Vanessa's maternity matter?

Ortiz played the next section.

Claire said, "She thinks Adrian will never forgive her if he learns whose egg she used."

Then the recording ended.

Margaret whispered, "Whose egg?"

No answer.

The clinic began an internal investigation.

Records revealed that the embryo transferred to Vanessa had been created three years earlier.

The father's genetic material belonged to Adrian.

But the egg donor code did not belong to Vanessa.

The donor code corresponded to a woman in a private fertility preservation program.

The donor's name had been sealed.

Daniel sought a court order.

Vanessa's attorney fought it.

The judge approved limited disclosure.

At 4:07 PM the clinic released the name.

Adrian read it.

Then dropped the paper.

Margaret picked it up.

The name printed beside the donor identification number was Claire Bennett.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Adrian stood at the window.

The city stretched beneath him.

Noah was biologically Adrian's son.

And Claire's.

Vanessa had carried him.

Given birth to him.

Raised him publicly as her own.

But genetically, the woman who had died years earlier was Noah's mother.

Margaret remembered the photograph hidden in the closet.

Claire.

Vanessa.

Adrian.

She remembered Noah saying, Mommy lady.

Perhaps Vanessa had shown him Claire's photograph.

Perhaps not.

Nothing seemed impossible anymore.

Adrian whispered, "Claire froze eggs?"

Daniel nodded.

"According to the clinic."

"I didn't know."

"She may have done it privately."

"How did my sperm get used?"

That question silenced everyone.

The clinic had records showing Adrian's genetic material had been stored during the fertility treatment process.

Someone with high level authorization transferred it.

Someone altered the donor code.

Someone arranged the embryo.

Vanessa had given birth to Claire's biological son without Adrian knowing.

Ortiz said, "This was planned."

Adrian looked at her.

"By Vanessa?"

"Maybe."

"Why?"

Ortiz looked toward the financial documents recovered from the estate.

"Forty two million dollars may be a good place to start."

That night Adrian sat beside Noah's bed.

He studied the boy's face.

Had Claire known?

Had she known there could someday be a child?

Had she consented?

Or had something been taken from her?

Noah opened his eyes.

"Daddy?"

"I'm here."

"Mommy coming?"

Adrian hesitated.

"Which mommy?"

Noah's eyes moved toward the closet.

May you like

Then he whispered a name no one had ever taught him.

"Claire."
