Chapter 15 - room 317
Police reached the Belmont House before dawn.
Adrian was told to remain behind.
He refused.
Ortiz compromised.
He could wait downstairs.
Margaret stayed with Noah at the Park Avenue apartment.
The little boy woke at six.
"Where Daddy?"
"Helping someone."
"Claire?"
Margaret looked at him.
No one understood how Noah knew the name.
Perhaps Vanessa had spoken it.
Perhaps he had seen photographs.
Children heard more than adults realized.
"Maybe," Margaret said.
Noah returned to his blocks.
At the Belmont House, Ortiz and two detectives climbed to the third floor.
Room 317 was locked.
No response.
The manager provided a key.
The room was empty.
But someone had lived there recently.
A cup remained beside the sink.
Clothes hung in the closet.
A suitcase sat open.
On the desk was a photograph of Noah.
Taken from a distance.
Central Park.
Three months earlier.
Claire had been watching him.
Adrian stared at the photograph when Ortiz brought him upstairs.
"She was here."
Ortiz nodded.
A laptop remained on the desk.
Encrypted.
A note lay beneath it.
ADRIAN, IF YOU FOUND THIS, DO NOT LOOK FOR ME UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND WHY ROBERT NEEDS NOAH ALIVE.
Adrian read it twice.
"He threatened to kill her."
Ortiz said, "Maybe that threat was designed to force your signature."
"Or maybe he has her."
"Forensics will tell us when this room was last occupied."
They searched.
Inside a drawer detectives found photographs of Robert.
Airports.
Restaurants.
Private residences.
Claire had been tracking him for years.
Another drawer contained documents linking Robert to accounts in six countries.
Enough evidence to support an international investigation.
Adrian should have felt relief.
Robert's empire was finally exposed.
Instead he stared at the empty room.
"Where is she?"
Ortiz did not know.
Back at the apartment, Margaret received a call.
Unknown number.
She did not answer.
It rang again.
Then a voicemail appeared.
She played it.
Claire's voice.
"Margaret, please do not tell Adrian you heard this."
Margaret's heart stopped.
The message had been recorded less than an hour earlier.
Claire was alive.
Claire continued.
"Robert does not have me."
Margaret sat down.
"I let him believe he does."
The message continued.
"There is one part of the truth Adrian cannot know yet."
Margaret whispered, "What?"
Claire's voice came through the phone.
"Noah was not the first child created from those embryos."
Margaret stopped breathing.
The voicemail ended.
She immediately called Ortiz.
Before the detective answered, another message arrived.
A photograph.
A boy stood beside a lake.
Perhaps six or seven years old.
Dark hair.
Blue eyes.
He looked remarkably like Adrian.
Margaret stared.
Below the photograph was one sentence.
ROBERT HAS THE OTHER BOY.
Margaret felt the room tilt.
Noah walked toward her carrying Captain.
"Mar-gret?"
She locked the phone screen.
"I'm okay."
The elevator opened.
Adrian returned.
His face looked exhausted.
"Claire's gone."
Margaret stared at him.
She had promised nothing.
Claire had asked her not to tell him.
But a second child might be in danger.
Adrian noticed her expression.
"What happened?"
Margaret looked at Noah.
Then at Adrian.
Before she could speak, Adrian's phone rang.
He answered.
Robert's voice came through the speaker.
"Did you enjoy room 317?"
Adrian's face hardened.
"Where is Claire?"
Robert laughed.
"Still asking the wrong question."
"What do you want?"
"I already told you."
"I am not signing anything."
"Then perhaps you need another reason."
A video message appeared.
Adrian opened it.
The same boy from Margaret's photograph stood inside a dark room.
He looked frightened.
Behind him was a steel door.
Adrian stared at the child's face.
Robert spoke through the phone.
"You recognize him, don't you?"
Adrian whispered, "Who is he?"
Robert answered slowly.
"The son you never knew you had."
Silence filled the apartment.
Adrian looked at Margaret.
Margaret could no longer hide what she knew.
She held out her phone.
Adrian saw Claire's photograph.
The boy beside the lake.
His hands began shaking.
Robert continued speaking.
"Claire kept one secret from everyone."
Adrian could barely speak.
"What secret?"
Robert laughed softly.
"The real reason she disappeared."
Then the call ended.
Adrian immediately tried calling back.
Nothing.
Ortiz began tracing the number.
Margaret opened Claire's voicemail again.
Noah stood beside Adrian.
The room seemed suddenly too small for the truth filling it.
Adrian looked at his son.
Then at the photograph of the older boy.
Two children.
Two biological heirs.
Two lives built around secrets created before either child was born.
Vanessa was facing prosecution.
Noah was finally safe from her.
The trust accounts had been frozen.
Victor was cooperating.
Robert Cole had been exposed as alive.
For the first time, Adrian had enough evidence to tear apart the empire his father had built.
That should have felt like victory.
And in one way, it was.
Noah no longer flinched when Adrian entered a room.
He no longer hid crackers beneath his pillow.
He no longer cried when Margaret left for the evening.
The immediate nightmare was ending.
But a larger one had just opened.
Ortiz called.
"We traced Robert's last signal."
Adrian grabbed his coat.
"Where?"
There was a pause.
Ortiz answered.
"Connecticut."
Adrian froze.
His father's old estate had been in Connecticut.
The place where Robert supposedly died.
The place Adrian had spent half his childhood.
The place he had not entered in eight years.
Margaret looked at him.
Adrian understood immediately.
Robert had gone back to the beginning.
Adrian crouched beside Noah.
"I need to go somewhere."
Noah held up Captain.
"Daddy come back?"
Adrian's eyes filled.
"Always."
He hugged his son.
Then stood.
Margaret walked him to the elevator.
"Bring that boy home."
Adrian looked at her.
"You believe him?"
"I believe there is a child."
"Robert could be lying."
"Then prove it."
The elevator doors opened.
Adrian stepped inside.
Before the doors closed, Noah ran toward him.
"Daddy."
Adrian held the doors.
Noah pointed toward the photograph on Margaret's phone.
The older boy.
Then Noah said something neither adult expected.
"Brother."
Adrian stared.
"How do you know that word?"
Noah pointed again.
"Brother Daniel."
Margaret's blood turned cold.
Daniel.
Their attorney.
Daniel Ruiz.
Adrian looked at her.
Margaret looked back.
Neither spoke.
Because Daniel had never met the boy in the photograph.
At least not in front of them.
The elevator doors began closing.
Adrian stopped them.
He called Daniel.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
Margaret opened Claire's voicemail details.
A hidden attachment appeared beneath the audio.
She had not noticed it before.
One document.
Password protected.
The password hint contained two words.
TRUST DANIEL?
Margaret looked up.
Adrian saw the screen.
The penthouse investigation had begun with a security camera, a terrified child and one bloody footprint on a white apron.
They had believed Vanessa was the center of the story.
Then Claire.
Then Robert.
Now Adrian realized there might have been someone else standing quietly beside them from the beginning.
Someone who knew the law.
Someone who knew the trust.
Someone who had access to every document Adrian signed.
Someone who had repeatedly advised him where to go, what to file and what not to pursue.
Daniel Ruiz.
Adrian stepped out of the elevator.
"No."
Margaret whispered, "What are you thinking?"
Adrian looked toward the locked document on her phone.
"I think my father was right about one thing."
"What?"
"We have been asking the wrong questions."
His phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
DO NOT GO TO CONNECTICUT.
A second message appeared.
ROBERT KNOWS YOU FOUND OUT ABOUT THE OTHER CHILD.
A third.
AND HE KNOWS CLAIRE IS COMING FOR NOAH.
Margaret stared.
Adrian typed quickly.
Where are you?
Daniel did not answer.
Then the building security system announced that someone had entered the private garage using Daniel's credentials.
Adrian opened the camera feed.
A black car waited beside the elevator.
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
Not Daniel.
Robert Cole.
Alive.
Older.
Real.
Standing beneath Adrian's building.
Robert looked directly into the garage camera.
Then lifted one hand.
He was holding Captain.
Noah's blue stuffed rabbit.
Margaret turned.
Noah was standing beside her.
His hands were empty.
She had seen him holding Captain less than one minute earlier.
Noah looked down.
Then toward the hallway.
His face changed.
Fear returned.
He whispered one sentence.
"Grandpa took him."
Adrian froze.
Robert had been inside the building.
Perhaps inside the apartment.
And if he had been close enough to take Noah's rabbit without anyone seeing him, then nothing they believed was safe anymore.
The garage feed suddenly went black.
The elevator began moving.
Upward.
Floor 3.
Floor 11.
Floor 24.
Floor 39.
Adrian grabbed Noah.
Margaret locked the apartment.
Floor 52.
Floor 61.
Floor 68.
Noah began crying.
Margaret stared at the elevator display.
70.
The doors did not open.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then Adrian's phone vibrated one final time.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Claire standing outside the apartment door.
Taken only seconds earlier.
She was looking directly toward the camera.
Behind her stood Daniel Ruiz.
And between them was the older boy.
The child in the photograph.
Adrian's unknown son.
May you like
The message beneath the image contained only six words.
CHOOSE WHICH SON YOU WANT BACK.
