Chapter 11 - the dead man in the photograph

Adrian believed the date had to be wrong.

His father had died of a heart attack eight years earlier.

Adrian saw the body.

He attended the funeral.

He signed the death certificate paperwork.

Yet the photograph appeared authentic.

Detective Ortiz sent it for examination.

No obvious manipulation.

The metadata had been stripped.

But the printed date visible on a wall calendar in the background matched two years after Robert's death.

Margaret studied Robert's face.

"Could it be his brother?"

"No," Adrian said. "Thomas looked different."

"Then how?"

Adrian had no answer.

Daniel investigated the death.

Robert Cole collapsed at his Connecticut home.

A private physician pronounced him dead.

The body was transferred to a family funeral home.

There was no autopsy.

Adrian remembered how quickly everything happened.

His father's instructions had been unusually specific.

Closed casket after private family viewing.

Cremation.

No public service.

At the time Adrian believed Robert simply disliked ceremony.

Now everything looked different.

Ortiz said, "We need to verify whether your father's death occurred as recorded."

Adrian stared at her.

"You're telling me my father might have faked his death?"

"I'm telling you evidence is inconsistent."

Margaret asked, "Why would he?"

Daniel looked at the financial scheme.

"Money."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"My father had hundreds of millions."

"Then maybe not his money."

Ortiz reopened Robert's records.

The physician who signed the death certificate had retired to Switzerland.

The funeral home closed four years later.

The cremation paperwork contained inconsistencies.

Adrian felt as if his entire life had become a manufactured story.

Then Victor Hale returned.

He walked into a police station in New Jersey and asked to speak with Detective Ortiz.

He brought a lawyer.

And a deal.

Victor admitted helping Vanessa move money.

He admitted falsifying trust documents.

He admitted confronting Claire.

But he denied killing her.

"Vanessa was supposed to scare her," he said.

Ortiz asked, "At the estate?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"Claire refused to give us the original records."

"Then?"

"She left."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Where did she go?"

Victor looked toward his attorney.

Then answered.

"To meet Robert."

Ortiz remained still.

"Robert Cole was dead."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

Adrian watched the recorded interview later.

Victor continued.

"Robert staged his death because federal investigators were getting close to accounts he had hidden overseas."

"Who knew?"

"Me. Claire eventually. Vanessa later."

"Adrian?"

"No."

"Why keep his son uninformed?"

Victor laughed.

"Robert did not trust his son."

Adrian stopped the recording.

Pain crossed his face.

Margaret said, "You don't have to watch."

"Yes, I do."

He continued.

Victor explained that Robert lived under another identity.

Claire discovered him while investigating the missing trust money.

She confronted him.

Robert told Claire that the trust had been designed as leverage over Adrian.

A biological heir from two Cole bloodlines would unlock funds Robert had concealed.

Claire was horrified.

She told Robert she would expose everything.

The night Claire died, she drove to the estate to collect records.

Vanessa followed.

Victor followed Vanessa.

Claire left the estate alive.

Victor insisted on that point.

"Who followed Claire?" Ortiz asked.

Victor looked frightened for the first time.

"Robert."

"Then what?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I swear."

"What happened at 11:42?"

Victor lowered his eyes.

"Claire called me."

"What did she say?"

"She said Robert had stopped her car."

"Where?"

"Old quarry road."

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

Ortiz stared.

Victor's voice broke.

"I did nothing."

Claire's car was found miles away from the estate.

Victor believed Robert moved it.

But he had no proof.

Then Ortiz asked the question Adrian had been waiting for.

"Where is Robert Cole now?"

Victor looked directly toward the camera.

"I don't know."

"Is he alive?"

A long pause.

Then Victor said, "He was six months ago."

Adrian stopped the recording again.

Margaret whispered, "Your father is alive."

Adrian did not answer.

His phone rang.

A video call.

Unknown number.

He nearly ignored it.

Then accepted.

The screen showed darkness.

A man's face slowly appeared.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray hair.

But unmistakable.

Robert Cole.

Adrian's dead father.

Robert smiled.

"Hello, son."

Adrian could not speak.

Robert continued.

"I imagine you have questions."

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere Vanessa cannot reach me."

"Did you kill Claire?"

Robert's smile disappeared.

"No."

"Did Vanessa?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

Robert leaned closer to the camera.

"That is the wrong question."

Adrian's hands tightened.

"What is the right question?"

Robert answered.

May you like

"Why does everyone assume Claire is dead?"

Then the connection ended.
