Chapter 6 - what claire discovered
Adrian did not sleep.
At two in the morning he opened an old encrypted storage drive he had not touched in years.
Margaret made coffee.
Neither of them spoke much.
Noah slept in the guest room with Captain the rabbit beside his face.
Adrian searched through archived files.
Photographs.
Emails.
Company documents.
Most were meaningless.
At three seventeen, he stopped.
Margaret looked over.
"What?"
Adrian opened an email.
It had been sent by Claire five years earlier.
Three months before her death.
Adrian read silently.
Then again.
Margaret waited.
Finally he turned the screen.
Claire had written only four lines.
Adrian,
There are accounts your father never disclosed.
Vanessa knows more than she is telling you.
Do not confront either of them until I have copies.
C.
Margaret felt cold.
"Did you ever see this?"
"No."
"It was in your email."
"In an archive folder."
"Could someone have moved it?"
Adrian nodded slowly.
"Vanessa knew my passwords back then."
Margaret looked toward Noah's bedroom.
"Why would Claire investigate your father?"
"She worked for the foundation's compliance team."
"And the accounts?"
"I don't know."
Adrian searched again.
There were no later messages from Claire.
He opened his calendar from that year.
The day after Claire died had one deleted event.
He restored metadata.
A meeting had been scheduled for eight thirty in the morning.
Claire Bennett.
Location unknown.
Adrian leaned back.
"She was going to meet me."
Margaret said, "You told Vanessa that yesterday."
"I remembered the meeting, but not the reason."
"What did Claire tell you?"
"Only that it concerned my father."
Adrian rubbed his face.
"I thought it might be about old foundation records."
Margaret asked carefully, "Did Vanessa know about the meeting?"
"I don't remember telling her."
"Could she have known anyway?"
Adrian looked at the archived email.
"Yes."
At four fifteen, Noah woke.
Margaret brought him into the kitchen.
He climbed into Adrian's lap.
"Daddy sad?"
Adrian held him.
"No."
Noah touched his face.
"Daddy sad."
Adrian closed the computer.
For the next hour, they sat together.
The moment was simple.
Quiet.
But Margaret noticed something.
Noah did not ask for Vanessa.
Not once.
At seven, Adrian called an attorney named Daniel Ruiz.
By nine, Daniel arrived.
He listened carefully as Adrian described the locked room, Margaret's notebook and the surveillance footage.
Daniel's expression remained serious.
"You should document everything."
"I already am."
"Do not confront Vanessa alone."
"Why?"
"Because if she believes you're preparing for custody litigation, behavior can escalate."
Adrian looked toward Noah.
"What do I do?"
"Speak with a child specialist. Follow professional recommendations. And until we know more, keep him somewhere safe."
Adrian nodded.
Then said, "There is something else."
He told Daniel about Claire.
Daniel's posture changed.
"That is separate."
"Maybe."
"Adrian, your son's immediate safety must remain the priority."
"It is."
"Then don't mix an old death with a current domestic situation unless evidence connects them."
Margaret agreed.
But evidence came sooner than anyone expected.
At eleven thirty, Adrian received a notification.
Motion detected at penthouse security control panel.
He opened the camera feed.
Vanessa stood inside the control room.
She was not alone.
A man in a gray jacket was beside her.
Adrian zoomed in.
"Who is that?" Daniel asked.
Adrian's face hardened.
"Victor Hale."
"Who?"
"My father's former accountant."
Victor had retired seven years earlier.
Or at least that was what Adrian believed.
On screen, Vanessa handed Victor a small black drive.
Victor inserted it into the security computer.
Daniel stood.
"What are they doing?"
Adrian opened remote system logs.
Someone was attempting to access archived video.
"She's deleting something."
He locked the system remotely.
The screen showed Victor reacting.
Vanessa looked toward the security camera.
Directly at it.
Adrian felt an unexpected chill.
She knew he was watching.
Then Vanessa smiled.
She lifted her phone.
Seconds later Adrian's phone rang.
He answered.
Vanessa said, "Enjoying the show?"
"Get away from the system."
"You left me in my own home like a criminal."
"Who is Victor?"
"You know Victor."
"Why is he there?"
"Because I asked him to come."
"What is on the drive?"
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
Then at Victor.
Finally she said, "Something Claire died trying to protect."
Adrian stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.
"What did you say?"
Vanessa ended the call.
On the security feed, Victor removed the black drive.
He and Vanessa walked toward the elevator.
Adrian called building security.
Too late.
The elevator descended.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Daniel said, "Do not follow them."
Adrian grabbed his coat.
"She just admitted Claire's death was connected."
"She implied it."
"That's enough."
Daniel blocked him.
"Your son is here."
That stopped Adrian.
Noah stood in the hallway holding his rabbit.
Adrian looked at him.
Then at the empty camera feed.
He lowered his coat.
Margaret understood what Vanessa had done.
She had thrown a mystery in front of Adrian because she knew he would chase it.
But Adrian did not.
Not this time.
He picked up Noah instead.
"You're right," he told Daniel.
Then Adrian looked toward Margaret.
"We deal with Noah first."
Margaret nodded.
But later that afternoon, she found something inside Noah's stuffed rabbit.
Something hard beneath the fabric.
She opened a small tear in the seam.
Inside was a memory card.
Margaret stared at it.
She had never put it there.
Adrian had never put it there.
And Noah was too young.
May you like
Someone had hidden it.
Someone who believed the safest place in the penthouse was inside the toy of a frightened little boy.
