Chapter 12 - the woman who died twice
Claire's body had been identified after the crash.
That fact seemed impossible to challenge.
Dental records matched.
Personal belongings matched.
Family confirmed the identification.
The death certificate was valid.
Yet Robert's question infected every conversation.
Why does everyone assume Claire is dead?
Ortiz obtained the original forensic files.
The body had been badly damaged by the crash and subsequent fire.
Identification relied primarily on dental records.
No DNA comparison was performed.
At the time, that was not unusual under the circumstances.
Daniel asked, "Could dental records have been switched?"
Ortiz replied, "Possible, but difficult."
"Who provided them?"
A dentist in Manhattan.
The practice had since closed.
The dentist died three years earlier.
Adrian felt almost numb.
Every trail ended with someone dead.
Margaret remained focused on Noah.
The boy had begun seeing a child therapist.
He slept better.
He still cried when hearing high heels on marble.
But he laughed more.
He ate normally.
He stopped hiding food beneath pillows.
That last discovery nearly broke Margaret.
Noah had been saving crackers.
The therapist explained that children who feared food deprivation sometimes did that.
Adrian sat outside the therapist's office afterward.
"I left him with her."
Margaret answered, "You didn't know."
"I should have."
"You know now."
Adrian looked at her.
"What if I don't know anything?"
Margaret understood.
His wife had deceived him.
His father had faked his death.
Claire might not be dead.
Even Noah's conception had been engineered.
Adrian needed something solid.
Margaret pointed toward the therapy room.
"You know him."
Adrian looked through the glass at Noah stacking blocks.
Margaret continued.
"Start there."
That evening police arrested Vanessa.
Victor's cooperation and financial records supported charges related to fraud and conspiracy.
Evidence concerning Claire's death remained insufficient.
Vanessa was released on bond under strict conditions.
She could not contact Noah except through approved channels.
Adrian expected rage.
Instead Vanessa seemed almost relieved.
Outside court she told reporters nothing.
But when she passed Adrian, she whispered, "Ask Margaret why Claire chose her."
Adrian stopped.
"What?"
Vanessa kept walking.
He immediately turned toward Margaret.
She looked confused.
"I never knew Claire."
But later that night Margaret remembered something.
A woman.
Years earlier.
Margaret had worked for a family in Boston.
A temporary weekend position.
A young red haired woman arrived late one night.
She was upset.
She asked to use the kitchen phone because her mobile battery had died.
Margaret made tea.
They spoke for perhaps twenty minutes.
The woman never gave her full name.
But Margaret remembered her eyes.
Could it have been Claire?
She searched old photographs online.
Her heart began pounding.
Yes.
It was Claire.
Adrian stared.
"When?"
"About five years ago."
"Before she died?"
"Three weeks before."
"What did she say?"
Margaret struggled to remember.
"She asked if I had children."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"Anything else?"
Margaret closed her eyes.
Then remembered.
"She asked whether I believed children could remember people they never met."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"I thought she was talking about grief."
Margaret continued.
"She asked if I would protect a child if I ever knew someone was using him."
Adrian stood.
"She knew about Noah."
"But Noah wasn't conceived yet."
"Maybe the plan already existed."
Margaret suddenly remembered one more thing.
Claire had given her a business card.
Margaret rarely threw cards away.
She kept old letters and documents in boxes at home.
Ellen searched Margaret's apartment.
Two hours later she called.
"I found it."
On the back of Claire's card was handwritten text.
If you ever work for the Cole family, trust the child before the adults.
Margaret stared at the message.
Claire had known.
Years before Margaret was hired.
Someone had arranged Margaret's employment.
Adrian contacted the staffing agency that originally recommended her.
The agency checked archived files.
Margaret's placement request had been marked as priority.
The referral came from a private client.
Name confidential.
Payment made in advance.
Adrian asked for the bank source.
The agency resisted.
Ortiz obtained legal authority.
The transfer originated from an account opened under the name Clara Benton.
Claire Bennett.
Margaret sat down.
Claire had paid to place her inside Adrian's future home.
Before Noah was even born.
Margaret whispered, "She chose me."
Adrian looked at her.
"Why?"
Margaret remembered the night in Boston.
The tea.
The questions.
Claire studying her.
Perhaps Claire was interviewing her without saying so.
But one mystery remained.
If Claire arranged Margaret's placement years in advance, then she believed she might not be there to protect Noah herself.
Or she knew she would disappear.
The next morning, a package arrived.
No sender.
Inside was a flash drive.
One video.
Claire appeared on screen.
Older than she looked in the recordings before the crash.
Alive.
The date embedded in the video was only three months earlier.

Claire looked into the camera.
Then said, "Margaret, if you are seeing this, Robert found Adrian before I did."
