Chapter 7 - captain's secret
The memory card contained eleven video files.
Adrian watched the first one alone.
Then he immediately called Margaret and Daniel into the room.
The footage appeared to have been recorded from a hidden camera.
The angle was low.
Possibly inside a bookshelf.
The date was five years earlier.
Claire sat at a table.
Across from her was Victor Hale.
The audio was imperfect but understandable.
Claire said, "These transfers happened after Robert died."
Robert Cole.
Adrian's father.
Victor replied, "Keep your voice down."
"Someone moved forty two million dollars."
Victor looked nervous.
"Stop investigating."
"Why?"
"Because the beneficiary records were changed."
"By who?"
Victor stared toward the hidden camera.
Then whispered one name.
"Vanessa."
Adrian paused the video.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel finally said, "We need to verify whether this recording is authentic."
Adrian nodded.
Margaret asked, "Why would this be inside Noah's toy?"
Adrian opened the second file.
Claire was alone this time.
She spoke directly toward the camera.
"If Adrian ever sees this, I need him to know I did not steal anything."
Adrian's eyes remained fixed on the screen.
Claire continued.
"Vanessa believes Robert promised her something. I don't know what. She has access to accounts that should have been closed after his death."
The recording ended.
The third file showed Claire arguing with Vanessa.
The room appeared to be an office.
Vanessa looked younger.
But the anger was unmistakable.
Claire said, "You're moving money through trusts connected to Adrian."
Vanessa replied, "You don't understand the arrangement."
"What arrangement?"
"It has nothing to do with you."
"You're using his name."
"He will benefit."
"Does he know?"
Vanessa stepped closer.
"You were supposed to be my friend."
"I am your friend."
"Then stop."
Claire shook her head.
"I can't."
The file ended abruptly.
Adrian sat very still.
Margaret could see the pain on his face.
Not because the videos proved everything.
They did not.
But they proved Vanessa had been hiding something long before they married.
The fourth file was the most disturbing.
Claire stood beside a parked car at night.
Rain fell.
The camera must have been inside another vehicle.
Vanessa approached.
There was no audio.
The women argued.
Claire tried to walk away.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
Claire pulled free.
Then another person entered the frame.
Victor.
He took something from Claire.
A folder.
The recording ended.
Adrian immediately called the police.
Detective Lena Ortiz arrived that evening.
She watched every file.
She asked questions for two hours.
"When did you find the card?"
Margaret answered.
"Today."
"Who had access to the toy?"
"Everyone in the penthouse."
"Could Vanessa have placed it there?"
Adrian said, "Why would she?"
Ortiz looked at him.
"Maybe she didn't."
"Then Claire?"
"Claire died before Noah was born."
Adrian stared at the memory card.
Someone else had hidden it recently.
Ortiz asked, "Did you employ anyone who knew Claire?"
Adrian shook his head.
Then Margaret remembered something.
"Victor."
Everyone looked at her.
"He was inside the penthouse yesterday."
Ortiz nodded.
"But why hide evidence that implicates him?"
Margaret thought about it.
"Unless he wasn't hiding it."
Adrian frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Maybe he was returning it."
Silence.
Ortiz leaned back.
"That's possible."
Adrian looked toward the footage.
"Then why put it inside Noah's rabbit?"
Margaret answered slowly.
"Because Vanessa would never search the child's favorite toy."
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"Or because Victor wanted you to find it after leaving Vanessa."
Ortiz stood.
"I'll bring him in."
But Victor Hale was already gone.
His apartment was empty.
His car was found at Newark Airport.
No flight reservation existed under his name.
By midnight, police issued a request for information.
Vanessa was questioned but not arrested.
She denied everything.
She claimed the recordings were manipulated.
She claimed Claire had been unstable.
She claimed Victor had contacted her because he was worried Adrian was trying to frame her.
When Adrian returned to the Park Avenue apartment, he looked exhausted.
Noah ran toward him.
Adrian lifted him.
Margaret watched.
This time Noah smiled without fear.
That should have been reassuring.
Instead Margaret felt uneasy.
Because Vanessa was quiet.
Too quiet.
And dangerous people often became most frightening after they realized control was slipping away.
Two days later Vanessa filed for emergency custody of Noah.
Her petition described Adrian as unstable, obsessive and emotionally abusive.
Margaret read the filing twice.
Then she found her own name.
Vanessa accused Margaret Bell of manipulating the child.
Of fabricating allegations.
Of stealing private property.
And of planting evidence inside the penthouse.
Margaret stared at the page.
Adrian said, "I'm sorry."
She looked up.
"For what?"
"For bringing you into this."
"You didn't."
"She could destroy your reputation."
Margaret closed the filing.
"Mr. Cole, I have worked for families who paid me to ignore things."
She looked toward Noah.
"I ignored too much in my life."
Adrian said nothing.
Margaret continued.
"I will not ignore this."
The custody hearing was scheduled for Friday.
On Thursday night, Margaret received an anonymous text.
ONE VIDEO IS MISSING.
She stared at the message.
A second text arrived.
ASK WHAT HAPPENED AT 11:42 PM.
May you like
Then a third.
CLAIRE DID NOT DIE WHERE THEY FOUND HER CAR.
