THE BLACK WEDDING GIFT / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - The Name Her Mother Buried

They returned to the bridal suite after midnight.

The flowers had begun to wilt.

The broken pearls had been collected into a glass dish. Vanessa’s veil lay across the chair where she had left it. The mirrors still reflected occasional police lights from the street below.

Vanessa stood by the window while Helena remained near the open black box.

Lena, Claire, and Mara waited outside with Detective Pierce.

“This was your last chance to tell me everything,” Vanessa said.

Helena did not defend herself.

“Three weeks ago, I received a note.”

“From whom?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did it say?”

“That evidence would be delivered during the wedding. It instructed me to make sure you opened the black box before walking downstairs.”

“So you allowed it into the suite.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you warn me?”

“Because the note said Adrian would cancel the wedding if he learned about the box.”

“That would have protected me.”

“It would also have allowed him to disappear before the police could connect him to White Chapel.”

Vanessa turned from the window.

“You used my wedding as bait.”

“I believed the police would arrest him as soon as the recording played.”

“One of the officers worked for him.”

“I did not know.”

“My dress contained a tracking device.”

“I did not know.”

“Forty-eight million dollars nearly disappeared.”

“I did not know.”

Helena’s voice broke.

“I was trying to correct what I did know.”

Vanessa’s anger did not vanish, but it changed.

“What did you do?”

Helena sat beside the ruined dress.

“When Richard told me about Marianne, I was terrified. The company was already unstable. Malcolm convinced me that recognizing Lena would destroy the trust and leave you with nothing.”

“So you helped hide her.”

“I sent Marianne money and asked her not to contact Richard until the restructuring was complete.”

“Did she agree?”

“No. She returned every payment.”

“Then what happened?”

“Malcolm told me she had left the country. Richard became obsessed with finding her and Lena. He stopped trusting everyone, including me.”

“And you let him believe they chose to disappear.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked toward the black box.

Helena’s silence had allowed Malcolm to continue controlling the family. It had allowed Adrian to enter Richard’s office and build a plan around Lena.

Yet Helena had also spent years living beneath Malcolm’s threats.

Fear did not excuse what she had done.

But it explained why Adrian knew exactly how to control her.

“He used Father’s reputation against you,” Vanessa said.

“I believed protecting the family name would protect you.”

“It almost gave Adrian everything.”

“I know.”

Vanessa sat across from her mother.

“Who sent the note?”

“The handwriting looked familiar.”

“Whose?”

“Your father’s.”

Vanessa’s body went still.

“You believed a dead man sent you instructions?”

“I believed someone had copied his handwriting.”

“Did the note contain anything only he would know?”

Helena reached into her handbag and removed a folded piece of black paper.

The message was written in silver ink.

The bride must open the gift before the fourth bell.

Do not stop the ceremony too early.

Cabinet 2147 will return what you buried.

At the bottom was a small symbol resembling a bird with one broken wing.

Vanessa recognized it.

Her father had drawn the same bird in the corners of letters he wrote to her as a child.

No one outside the family had ever seen it.

“Adrian could have found old letters.”

“Yes.”

“Malcolm could have copied it.”

“Yes.”

“But neither of them wanted the box opened.”

“No.”

Vanessa examined the note more closely.

“Claire sent the box.”

“Claire delivered it,” Helena said. “Someone left it in her apartment.”

Claire entered after Helena called her.

She confirmed that the black box had appeared outside her door twelve days earlier with Lena’s flash drive inside. A message instructed Claire to hide the brass key in Vanessa’s dress.

“Did you know who sent it?” Vanessa asked.

“No. I assumed Mara.”

Mara joined them.

“I created the recordings with Lena, but I did not make the box. The flash drive was taken from my room two days before Claire received it.”

Detective Pierce examined the handwriting.

“We should compare it with Richard’s records.”

Mara opened the digital files from Cabinet 2147.

Among the documents was a list of the companies used by Malcolm and Adrian. One company appeared repeatedly but had not received any payments.

Black Wing Restoration.

The company had purchased the abandoned conservatory, Adrian’s apartment, and several White Chapel properties before transferring them to shell companies.

Detective Pierce searched the registration.

“It was founded six years ago.”

“The year Richard died,” Vanessa said.

The registered owner was Richard Vale.

Not Adrian using Richard’s new passport.

The original registration had been filed four days before Richard entered the hospital.

Attached was a handwritten authorization carrying the broken-wing symbol.

Mara found another document.

It was an insurance policy on Cabinet 2147.

The contact address led to a private storage facility near the river.

Vanessa, Helena, Lena, Claire, Mara, and Detective Pierce reached it shortly before dawn.

The facility manager recognized Richard’s photograph.

“He came here earlier this week.”

Helena gripped the desk.

“That is impossible.”

The manager turned the security monitor toward them.

“I spoke to him myself.”

The video showed a man entering through the lobby two days before the wedding. He wore a dark coat and the same silver watch seen in the bank recording.

This time, the camera captured his face.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

He looked older.

His hair was nearly white. A thin scar ran along the side of his forehead.

But the face belonged to Richard Vale.

Her father looked directly toward the security camera as if he knew Vanessa would eventually watch.

Then he raised one hand.

Between his fingers was another brass key.

The storage manager handed Detective Pierce a sealed envelope.

“He instructed me to give this to Vanessa after the wedding.”

Vanessa opened it.

Inside was a photograph taken outside the Vale Grand Hotel three days earlier.

Richard stood across the street watching Vanessa and Adrian enter the building.

On the back was a message.

I am sorry I could not stop the first wedding.

I will stop the second.

Vanessa read the sentence twice.

“What second wedding?”

Lena moved closer.

The storage manager unlocked Richard’s unit.

Inside stood dozens of black boxes.

Each was labeled with a woman’s name.

Vanessa recognized several from Adrian’s apartment.

Melissa Crane.

Sofia Ward.

Lena Vale.

Mara Ellison.

Claire Mercer.

Helena Vale.

At the end of the row stood one box that had not been labeled with a woman’s name.

It was labeled Adrian Cross.
