THE BLACK WEDDING GIFT / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Wedding That Became a Trap

Claire saw the ventilation controls first.

A red emergency lever was mounted beside the foundation stone.

She ran toward it.

Malcolm shouted at Adrian.

“Stop her.”

Adrian moved, but Lena stepped into his path.

For one moment, the legal husband and wife stood face to face beneath the ballroom where he had planned to marry her sister.

“You should have stayed gone,” Adrian said.

“You should have learned what a signature means.”

Lena seized the black folder from the stone and threw it toward Vanessa.

Adrian reached after it.

Detective Pierce struck his arm aside. The gun fired into the stone floor, the sound exploding through the chamber.

No one was hit.

Claire pulled the emergency lever.

The ventilation fans reversed. The hissing stopped as fresh air rushed into the room.

Malcolm pressed the remote again, but the iron door remained locked.

“You damaged the control,” he said.

Claire held up a severed wire.

“I planned weddings for six years. I know how to stop a door from ruining one.”

Vanessa opened the black folder.

The documents inside were not only Richard’s will.

There were copies of payments from Malcolm to Adrian.

Payments connected to false identities, private officers, city clerks, and security companies.

Malcolm looked at Helena.

“You knew those were there.”

“I hoped they were.”

“You always were willing to gamble with other people’s lives.”

Helena stepped toward him.

“You erased Marianne’s marriage. You stole her daughter’s inheritance. You used Richard’s grief to control the company.”

“I protected the Vale empire.”

“You destroyed everyone who might inherit it.”

Malcolm laughed.

“Richard destroyed it when he decided guilt mattered more than survival.”

Vanessa searched the folder until she found a document signed three days before her father’s death.

It removed Malcolm from every position inside the Vale Trust.

The document had never been filed.

Malcolm had prevented it.

“Did you kill him?” Vanessa asked.

Helena looked at her.

Malcolm’s expression barely changed.

“Your father was already dying.”

“That is not an answer.”

“He refused to understand consequences.”

Lena moved toward him.

“What happened to my mother?”

“Marianne took the settlement.”

“She never signed it.”

“She accepted what she was given.”

“You mean what you left after threatening her.”

Malcolm’s gaze became cold.

“Your mother could have lived comfortably. Instead, she spent her life teaching you to hate people you had never met.”

Adrian stepped away from Detective Pierce.

“Enough. I want the transfer.”

Malcolm turned on him.

“You no longer have leverage.”

Adrian pointed toward Vanessa.

“I still have the bride.”

Vanessa met his eyes.

For two years, Adrian had studied her responses. He knew when she became uncertain, when she felt guilty, and when she wanted to avoid conflict.

He expected the woman he had trained.

Vanessa closed the folder.

“You never had me.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“You signed every document.”

“Under a name that was legally incomplete.”

“The bank will correct it.”

“The account is frozen.”

“Temporarily.”

“The marriage license is fraudulent.”

“I have people who can replace it.”

Vanessa lifted the passport carrying Richard’s name.

“And your entire plan depends on using the identity of a man you never realized had two legally recognized daughters.”

Adrian’s face changed.

Richard’s trust required unanimous consent from all principal heirs whenever identity fraud was suspected.

Until Lena was officially recognized, Adrian believed Vanessa was the only heir.

The second will changed everything.

Vanessa and Lena looked at each other.

Neither needed to speak.

Lena took out her phone.

Before entering the hotel, she had sent copies of Adrian’s passports, the recordings, and the trust documents to three law firms and two news organizations.

Claire had connected the phone to the ballroom’s audio system.

Every word spoken inside the chamber had been transmitted upstairs.

Malcolm looked toward the ceiling.

In the ballroom above them, hundreds of guests had not left.

The police had moved them away from the doors, but many remained inside while investigators checked the building.

They had heard Malcolm admit that he erased Marianne’s marriage.

They had heard Adrian demand payment for marrying Lena and deceiving Vanessa.

They had heard everything.

Police struck the iron door from the other side.

Malcolm rushed toward the control panel.

Claire moved away from it.

“You wanted a public wedding,” she said. “Now you have one.”

The door opened.

Real officers entered with their weapons lowered but ready.

Malcolm tried to speak first.

“I am the victim of an attempted extortion.”

Detective Pierce handed the recording device to the commissioner.

“He confessed while unlawfully detaining six people.”

Adrian backed toward the hidden passage.

Lena blocked him.

“Where are you going, husband?”

For the first time, Vanessa saw fear in Adrian’s eyes that was not performed.

“You think this ends with Malcolm?” he said.

“No,” Lena replied. “It begins with you.”

The officers arrested Adrian and Malcolm.

As Adrian passed Vanessa, he leaned toward her.

“Ask Helena why she knew the black box would arrive.”

Vanessa stared after him.

Her mother had claimed she knew nothing about the gift.

The police led the men upstairs.

The ballroom had become silent.

Vanessa emerged from the underground passage beside Lena, Claire, Mara, and Helena. Guests turned toward them.

The wedding stage remained beneath an arch of white flowers. The officiant stood near the abandoned altar. Cameras from several news organizations had entered with the police.

Vanessa walked onto the stage in her damaged dress.

She did not cry.

She did not hide the torn lace or the dirt along the hem.

She took the microphone Adrian had intended to use for his vows.

“There will be no wedding today.”

Whispers spread through the room.

“Adrian Cross entered this hotel intending to steal control of my family’s trust. He used false identities, forged documents, and a marriage he never ended.”

She looked at Lena.

“He also helped erase a woman who had every right to stand here.”

Lena remained near the stage, uncertain.

Vanessa held out her hand.

After a moment, Lena joined her.

“This is Lena Vale,” Vanessa said. “My father’s daughter. My sister.”

Helena lowered her eyes as cameras turned toward her.

Vanessa continued.

“The Vale Foundation will open every financial record connected to Malcolm Vale and White Chapel Holdings. No board member, executive, or relative will be protected.”

Several people in the audience quietly stood and attempted to leave.

Police blocked the exits.

Vanessa looked directly at them.

“The ceremony is canceled.”

Then she looked at the untouched wedding cake, the flowers, and the guests who had come expecting a beautiful lie.

“But the truth has finally arrived.”

The room erupted with questions.

Detective Pierce escorted Vanessa away from the stage.

For one brief moment, she felt something close to relief.

Adrian had been exposed.

Malcolm had been arrested.

The transfer had been stopped.

Lena was alive.

The major secret was no longer buried.

Then Helena touched Vanessa’s arm.

“What Adrian said downstairs was true.”

Vanessa turned.

May you like

Helena’s face was filled with shame.

“I knew a black box would arrive.”
