THE BLACK WEDDING GIFT / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Bride Who Vanished

Vanessa left the hotel through the kitchen entrance wearing her damaged wedding dress beneath Helena’s long coat.

She refused to change.

The dress had been selected by Adrian, altered by his employees, and fitted with a tracking device. Leaving it behind felt like allowing him to erase what had happened.

Police vehicles formed a path through the crowd. Reporters shouted questions from behind the barriers.

“Vanessa, has the wedding been canceled?”

“Is Adrian under arrest?”

“Who was the woman in the bridal suite?”

“Was the marriage certificate real?”

Vanessa kept walking.

She gave them nothing.

Detective Pierce drove the first vehicle. Vanessa sat in the back with Claire while Helena followed in another car with two officers.

The Vale Conservatory had once been one of Richard’s favorite properties. The glass building stood beside a large stone archive surrounded by neglected gardens. Vanessa remembered visiting it as a child, running beneath citrus trees while her father met with donors.

After his death, the board declared the property too expensive to maintain.

Now metal fencing surrounded the grounds.

Claire examined the live signal on the laptop.

“It has stopped moving.”

“Is it inside the archive?”

“Yes.”

“Could Adrian have activated it?”

“Possibly.”

Vanessa looked through the window at the passing streets.

“Why did you believe Lena?”

Claire was silent for a moment.

“Because Adrian came to my apartment the night after you announced the engagement.”

Vanessa turned toward her.

“What did he want?”

“He asked what it would cost for me to disappear from your life.”

“And you never told me?”

“I tried. You said I was judging him because he wasn’t born into your world.”

Vanessa remembered the argument.

She had accused Claire of looking down on Adrian.

At the time, Claire had seemed angry and defensive.

Now Vanessa understood she had been frightened.

“What did you tell him?”

“That he could not afford me.”

Despite everything, Vanessa almost smiled.

Claire continued.

“Three days later, someone entered my office and copied every document connected to your wedding. After that, I began investigating him.”

“And found Lena.”

“She found me.”

The vehicles turned onto the conservatory road.

The property appeared through the trees, dark against the afternoon sky. Several glass panels had shattered. Vines climbed the iron frames. The old archive stood behind it, its green door partly hidden by branches.

Detective Pierce stopped at the gate.

“The lock has been cut.”

The officers entered first.

Vanessa followed despite the detective’s warning.

Inside the conservatory, dead leaves covered the tiled paths. Empty planters stood beneath the broken glass ceiling. The air smelled of wet stone and old soil.

The live signal led them through the main greenhouse and into the archive building.

The green door from Lena’s recording waited at the end of a narrow corridor.

Vanessa inserted the brass key.

It turned.

Beyond the door was a room filled with metal cabinets.

Most were open and empty.

One stood against the far wall.

2147.

Vanessa approached it.

The cabinet had no visible lock, only a narrow opening shaped like the brass key.

Inside were dozens of folders marked with dates from the final year of Richard’s life.

Claire opened the first.

It contained financial transfers from Vale subsidiaries into companies with no employees.

Another folder contained photographs of board members entering private banks.

The third contained information about Lena Rose Vale.

Vanessa read quickly.

Lena had grown up believing her mother, Marianne, had been abandoned by the Vale family. After Marianne died, Lena contacted Richard and demanded recognition.

Richard agreed to meet her privately.

Three months later, Lena married Adrian Kane.

Two weeks after the wedding, she disappeared.

Adrian changed his surname to Cross and left the company.

Helena found a sealed letter addressed to her.

The envelope had never been opened.

Her hands shook as she unfolded it.

Helena,

If Lena returns, do not trust the board. Marianne was right about what they did. I believed I could correct it quietly, but the money is only one part of the deception.

There are two versions of my will.

The public version protects the company.

The second version protects Vanessa.

Cabinet 2147 contains the path to it.

Do not let anyone file a marriage authorization in Vanessa’s name.

Richard

Vanessa read the final sentence again.

Her father had predicted the exact method Adrian used.

“He knew,” she said.

Helena pressed the letter against her chest.

“He tried to warn me.”

“Why didn’t you open it?”

“I never saw it. Someone placed it here after the archive closed.”

A faint sound came from the floor above.

Detective Pierce motioned for everyone to remain still.

The officers moved toward the stairs.

Vanessa heard a door close.

Then running footsteps.

She followed Claire through another passage while Helena remained with the files.

They reached a second greenhouse where a woman stood near a shattered window.

Dark hair.

Gray coat.

The Lena from the recording.

“Lena,” Claire called.

The woman looked back.

Fear crossed her face.

“Don’t come closer.”

“We saw your video,” Vanessa said.

“Then you need to leave.”

“Adrian is gone.”

“Adrian is not the person you should fear.”

A shadow moved behind the glass.

Lena turned.

Someone pulled her backward through the broken doorway.

Vanessa ran forward, but the passage beyond it was empty.

Only Lena’s gray coat remained on the ground.

Inside one pocket, Vanessa found a small recorder.

She pressed play.

At first, she heard only static.

Then came Adrian’s voice.

“You were supposed to destroy Cabinet 2147.”

A second man answered.

“I told you, Richard moved the original documents.”

“Vanessa has the key.”

“Then take it from her.”

“And after the transfer?”

A pause.

“The same thing that happened to the first Lena.”

The recording ended with a metallic click.

Claire took the device.

“Do you recognize the second voice?”

Vanessa did not.

But when they returned to the archive room, Helena had disappeared.

The cabinet stood open.

May you like

Richard’s letter was gone.

On the floor lay Helena’s sapphire ring.
