THE BLACK WEDDING GIFT / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - Beneath the Ballroom

They escaped through the apartment’s underground parking garage moments before the false officers entered the building.

Detective Pierce drove an unmarked car toward the hotel while calling the police commissioner directly. He no longer trusted the normal dispatch channels.

Lena sat beside Claire in the back seat.

Vanessa faced her.

“You are Adrian’s wife.”

“Legally.”

“Why did you marry him?”

“I was twenty-four and angry at the Vale family. My mother spent her life believing Richard had abandoned us. Adrian approached me with documents proving I was a Vale. He promised to help me claim what was mine.”

“Did he love you?”

Lena looked out the window.

“He loved access.”

After the marriage, Adrian used Lena’s family connection to enter Richard’s private office. When Lena discovered he was stealing information, she confronted him.

“He told me I had helped him create the perfect identity. A Vale relative no one knew existed. If anything went wrong, every record would lead to me.”

“Why didn’t you go to Richard?”

“I tried. The night before our meeting, someone forced my car off the road.”

Vanessa’s body stiffened.

“Adrian?”

“I believed so for years. Now I’m not certain.”

Lena survived but disappeared under another name. Adrian declared that she had abandoned him. Without Lena present, he began shifting her identity to Mara Ellison, the accountant investigating the Vale accounts.

Two women became one legal ghost.

“What happened to your mother?” Vanessa asked.

“She died before I learned the whole truth.”

“Did Richard abandon her?”

Lena met Vanessa’s eyes.

“No. Helena paid her to stay away.”

Vanessa said nothing.

She thought of Helena’s hidden knowledge, the unopened letter, and the way Adrian had said Helena would react whenever Richard’s name appeared.

“What else are you not telling me?”

“That depends on what is inside the second will.”

They approached the Vale Grand Hotel through an underground delivery entrance.

Above them, the canceled wedding had become a media disaster. Guests were being escorted out in groups. Reporters filled the main street.

Detective Pierce led them through the kitchen.

The wedding cake remained untouched beside trays of abandoned food. Staff members stood in frightened groups while real officers checked identification and sealed exits.

Claire found the service tunnel behind a refrigerated storage room.

The passage was narrow and lined with old brick. Pipes ran above their heads. The sound of footsteps from the ballroom echoed through the ceiling.

Vanessa’s torn wedding dress caught against the walls.

Lena offered to help, but Vanessa pulled the fabric free herself.

At the end of the passage stood an iron door.

The brass key fit the lock.

Beyond it, a circular room had been carved beneath the ballroom.

The foundation stone rested at its center.

A rectangular opening had been cut into the stone floor.

Mara Ellison stood beside it holding the black folder.

Helena was near the wall.

Adrian was nowhere in sight.

Vanessa rushed toward her mother.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Why did you leave the conservatory?”

“Mara found me before Adrian’s men arrived. She said the cabinet had been compromised.”

“You could have told me.”

“There was no time.”

“There is never time when you are hiding something.”

Helena looked at Lena Vale.

The two women stared at each other.

“You look like Marianne,” Helena said.

Lena’s voice became cold.

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You paid her to disappear.”

Helena lowered her eyes.

“Richard asked me to.”

“Why?”

Mara placed the folder on the stone.

“Because Marianne Vale was not Richard’s sister.”

Vanessa looked at her mother.

Helena closed her eyes.

“She was his first wife.”

The revelation silenced the room.

Lena gripped the edge of the stone.

“My mother told me they were married, but no records existed.”

“Richard’s father erased them,” Helena said. “Marianne came from a poor family. The Vale board believed the marriage would damage Richard’s future. They forced an annulment through documents Marianne never signed.”

“And then he married you.”

“Years later.”

“Did you know?”

“Not until after Vanessa was born.”

Vanessa felt as though every fact about her family had been built over another buried fact.

“If Marianne was his first wife, what does that make Lena?”

Mara answered.

“Richard’s legal heir.”

Vanessa turned toward Lena.

Lena appeared equally stunned.

Helena moved closer to the black folder.

“The second will must explain it.”

Mara broke the wax seal.

Inside were Richard’s handwritten statement, financial ledgers, and a legal document recognizing Lena as his daughter.

Lena’s knees nearly gave way.

“My father?”

“Richard discovered the truth two months before he died,” Mara said. “Marianne had hidden the pregnancy from him because she believed the Vale family would take the child.”

Vanessa stared at Lena.

They were not cousins.

They were sisters.

Richard had created the second will to divide the family assets between them and expose the board members who had stolen from Marianne.

“Why hide it?” Vanessa asked.

“Because the public release would have triggered control clauses inside the trust,” Helena said. “The board could challenge Lena’s identity and freeze everything.”

Mara opened the ledger.

“Richard planned to restructure the trust before revealing her. He died before he could finish.”

A voice came from the tunnel.

“That is the version he wanted you to believe.”

Adrian stepped into the room holding a gun.

He was no longer dressed as the groom. He wore a black coat over his white wedding shirt. Mud marked his shoes.

Detective Pierce moved in front of Vanessa.

Adrian pointed the weapon toward the floor.

“Do not be heroic. I need the folder, not a body.”

Lena faced him.

“You spent seven years hiding me.”

“You spent seven years refusing to understand your value.”

“You married me to steal my identity.”

“I married you because your name opened the first door.”

“And Vanessa?”

“The final door.”

Vanessa remained behind the detective.

“What is White Chapel?”

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

“The transfer of the Vale Heritage Trust to its lawful owner.”

“Lena?”

“No.”

The ballroom lights above them suddenly turned on.

Music began playing through the hotel speakers.

The wedding march.

Adrian smiled.

“Your guests may have left, but the ceremony has not finished.”

The stone wall behind him opened.

A man stepped from the hidden passage.

He was older, broad-shouldered, and dressed in an immaculate evening suit.

Vanessa recognized him immediately.

Malcolm Vale.

Chairman of the Vale board.

Richard’s older brother.

Her uncle.

Malcolm looked at the damaged dress and smiled.

“You look exactly like Helena did on her wedding day.”

Helena moved toward Vanessa.

“Stay away from him.”

Malcolm held out his hand to Adrian.

“The folder.”

Adrian did not give it to him.

“You promised the transfer first.”

“The account is frozen.”

“Then unfreeze it.”

Malcolm’s expression hardened.

“You were hired to complete a task.”

“I completed every task you gave me. I married Lena. I erased Mara. I brought Vanessa to the altar.”

Vanessa felt Claire’s hand close around her arm.

Adrian had finally named the person behind him.

Malcolm.

Her father’s brother.

The man who had helped raise Vanessa after Richard died.

The man waiting downstairs to walk her down the aisle in her father’s place.

Malcolm glanced at Detective Pierce.

“You should have accepted my offer, Detective.”

Pierce’s jaw tightened.

“What offer?”

“The one your former partner accepted.”

Malcolm pressed a remote control.

May you like

The iron door slammed shut behind them.

Gas began hissing through the ceiling vents.
