Chapter 10 - The Second Black Wedding Gift

Three weeks after the canceled wedding, Adrian Cross was charged with fraud, identity theft, unlawful detention, conspiracy, and falsifying government documents.
Malcolm Vale faced additional charges connected to the Vale Trust, the disappearance of corporate evidence, and the creation of White Chapel Holdings.
The city clerk who filed the false marriage license agreed to cooperate with investigators.
Several members of the Vale board resigned before they could be removed.
The bank permanently blocked the transfer.
The forty-eight million dollars remained inside the trust.
Vanessa’s marriage to Adrian had never legally existed.
Lena began the process of reclaiming her name.
Mara Ellison received protection while preparing to testify.
Claire returned to Vanessa’s side, not as an employee, but as the friend Vanessa should have trusted before Adrian taught her to doubt everyone.
The public story appeared complete.
A corrupt groom had targeted an heiress.
A secret wife had survived.
A powerful businessman had betrayed his own family.
A canceled wedding had exposed them all.
The truth was more complicated.
Richard Vale was alive.
No hospital employee could explain how a body identified as Richard had entered his coffin six years earlier. The medical files had been altered. The attending doctor had moved overseas. Security footage from the hospital had been erased.
Black Wing Restoration had quietly maintained Richard’s properties, accounts, and storage units ever since his supposed death.
Yet Richard had not contacted Vanessa.
He had only watched.
Every search for him ended at an empty room, a disconnected phone, or another black box.
Vanessa reopened the Vale Conservatory under joint control with Lena.
The damaged wedding dress was placed inside Cabinet 2147 beside the false marriage license and Adrian’s passports. Vanessa wanted a permanent reminder of how beautiful things could be used to conceal a trap.
Helena stepped down from the trust temporarily.
She did not ask Vanessa for immediate forgiveness.
Instead, she gave Lena every letter, photograph, and payment record connected to Marianne.
It was not enough to repair the past.
But it was a beginning.
On the morning Adrian was scheduled for his first major court hearing, Vanessa stood outside the courthouse with Lena and Claire.
Reporters filled the steps.
“Vanessa, do you have a message for Adrian?”
“Will the Vale family settle?”
“Have you spoken to your father?”
“Is Richard Vale alive?”
Vanessa stopped before entering.
“Adrian believed he could turn trust into a weapon,” she said. “He believed women would remain silent because the truth was embarrassing, painful, or complicated.”
She looked toward the cameras.
“He was wrong.”
Inside the courtroom, Adrian appeared without the confidence he had carried into the bridal suite. He wore a dark suit provided by his attorney. His hands were restrained beneath the table.
When Vanessa entered, his eyes moved to the black box she was carrying.
It was the box from Richard’s storage unit.
The one labeled Adrian Cross.
Adrian leaned toward his lawyer.
For the first time, he appeared genuinely terrified.
The prosecutor requested permission to introduce the contents as newly discovered evidence.
Adrian’s lawyer objected.
The judge allowed the box to be opened privately before ruling.
Vanessa watched as an investigator lifted the lid.
Inside was a marriage certificate.
Not Adrian’s marriage to Lena.
Not the false license involving Vanessa.
This certificate was twenty-nine years old.
It documented a marriage between Malcolm Vale and a woman named Evelyn Cross.
Adrian’s mother.
Beneath it was Adrian’s original birth certificate.
Father: Malcolm Vale.
Adrian stared at the document.
“No.”
Malcolm was not merely his employer.
Malcolm was his father.
Adrian had spent years marrying women to claim their family identities while his own identity had been hidden from him.
The investigator removed a letter written by Malcolm.
Evelyn,
The child can never carry my name. Richard is already asking questions. Raise him away from the family. When he is old enough, he may become useful.
Adrian stopped reading.
His face collapsed.
Malcolm had recruited his own son without acknowledging him. He had shaped Adrian’s anger, promised him wealth, and sent him into the lives of women connected to the Vale family.
Adrian had believed he was earning a place beside Malcolm.
He had always been another disposable piece of White Chapel.
Vanessa felt no sympathy for the harm Adrian had caused.
But she understood why Richard had prepared a box bearing his name.
The evidence did not excuse Adrian.
It destroyed the final loyalty protecting Malcolm.
Adrian asked to speak with the prosecutor.
Within hours, he agreed to provide testimony about White Chapel’s accounts, false officers, government contacts, and private properties.
Malcolm’s organization began collapsing.
The result should have felt like an ending.
Vanessa had stopped the theft.
She had exposed Adrian.
She had found her sister.
She had reclaimed control of the trust.
She had forced the Vale family’s secrets into the open.
But Richard was still missing.
After the hearing, Vanessa returned to her childhood home.
Helena had left a message saying she would arrive before dinner, but the house was empty.
The front door showed no sign of forced entry.
Vanessa walked through the silent hallway and entered the library.
A black box rested on Richard’s old desk.
Unlike the others, it had no label.
Claire called Detective Pierce while Lena checked the windows.
Vanessa opened the box.
Inside was the silver watch she had placed in her father’s coffin.
It was still running.
Beneath it lay a recent photograph.
Richard stood beside Helena at a private airfield.
The date printed in the corner was the morning after Vanessa’s canceled wedding.
Helena had claimed she had not seen Richard in six years.
On the back, someone had written:
Your mother told the truth about Adrian.
She lied about why your father disappeared.
A small recorder lay beneath the photograph.
Vanessa pressed play.
Richard’s voice filled the library.
“Vanessa, by the time you hear this, Adrian will have chosen whether to protect Malcolm or betray him.”
Vanessa gripped the edge of the desk.
“I am alive because your mother helped me disappear. She believed it was the only way to keep you safe.”
Lena moved closer.
The recording continued.
“But Helena did not know the entire plan.”
A door creaked somewhere upstairs.
Claire looked toward the ceiling.
Richard lowered his voice.
“White Chapel was never designed to steal the Vale Trust.”
Footsteps crossed the floor above them.
“It was designed to identify the person who could legally inherit something far more dangerous.”
Vanessa looked at Lena.
“What could be more dangerous than the trust?” Claire whispered.
Richard answered from the recorder as though he had heard her.
“The Vale name does not belong to our family.”
A shadow moved across the library doorway.
Vanessa turned.
Helena stood there, pale and breathless.
“Mother?”
Helena looked at the open box.
“You were not supposed to hear that recording yet.”
“Where is Father?”
Helena did not answer.
“Who does the Vale name belong to?”
Before Helena could speak, every light in the house went out.
Vanessa’s phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a live video.
Richard was sitting inside a dark vehicle.
Someone stood behind him.
The person’s face remained hidden, but one hand rested on Richard’s shoulder.
A black wedding ring circled the stranger’s finger.
Richard looked into the camera.
“Vanessa, do not trust the person who brought you the second box.”
The video shifted.
For one second, the hidden figure’s face appeared in the reflection of the vehicle window.
Vanessa dropped the phone.
She had seen that face every day of her childhood.
It belonged to someone whose funeral had taken place long before Richard’s.
Someone who should have been dead for more than twenty years.
Upstairs, a door slammed.
Helena stepped backward into the darkness.
Then the front door opened.
A man’s voice entered the house.
“The bride has finally learned enough.”
Vanessa reached for Lena’s hand.
May you like
The silver watch stopped ticking.
And inside the black box, a second compartment slowly opened.
