THE BLACK WEDDING GIFT / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Groom’s Second Life

The police searched the conservatory for forty minutes.

They found no sign of Helena.

One of the rear gates had been opened from inside. Tire tracks led from the garden toward an abandoned service road, but rain had begun falling and quickly blurred them.

Vanessa stood beneath the broken greenhouse roof as water darkened the shoulders of Helena’s coat.

Her wedding dress was stained with dirt. The torn lace dragged near her shoes.

She barely noticed.

Detective Pierce approached.

“We found a phone near the gate.”

“Whose?”

“Adrian’s.”

The screen was damaged, but Claire managed to access it using the passcode she had watched him enter months earlier.

The phone contained almost nothing.

No messages.

No photographs.

No contact list.

Only one map location saved under the name Home.

It led to an apartment building on the east side.

Vanessa looked toward the road.

“He let us find it.”

“Probably,” Claire said.

“Then he wants us to go.”

Detective Pierce disagreed.

“We secure the area first.”

“My mother does not have time for that.”

“We don’t know that she was taken.”

Vanessa held up the sapphire ring.

“She would never leave this.”

The detective’s expression softened.

“I understand.”

“No, you understand procedures. I understand my mother.”

They reached the apartment shortly before sunset.

The building was modern, private, and registered to a company called White Chapel Holdings.

Detective Pierce froze when he read the name.

“What is it?” Vanessa asked.

“The false officer from the hotel worked for a security contractor purchased by White Chapel Holdings six months ago.”

Adrian had built his own network of uniforms, access cards, drivers, and private investigators.

The apartment door was unlocked.

Inside, everything was white.

White walls.

White furniture.

White curtains.

No personal photographs or decorations.

The only dark object was a black gift box placed in the center of the dining table.

Vanessa approached carefully.

A card rested on top.

For the bride who asks too many questions.

Detective Pierce checked the box before allowing her to open it.

Inside were six passports.

Each showed Adrian’s photograph.

Each had a different name.

Adrian Kane.

Adrian Cross.

Daniel Cole.

Elliot Crane.

Marcus Ward.

Richard Vale.

Vanessa stared at the final passport.

The birth date matched her father’s.

The document was newly issued.

“This is how he reopened the account,” Claire said.

“He became Richard.”

Vanessa opened the remaining compartments.

There were photographs of Adrian with different women.

Some appeared to be wedding photographs.

A bride beside a courthouse.

A woman wearing an engagement ring at a restaurant.

Another standing beside Adrian near a private plane.

On the back of each photograph was a name and a number.

Lena Vale, access level one.

Melissa Crane, access level three.

Sofia Ward, access level two.

Vanessa Vale, access level seven.

Claire arranged the photographs across the table.

“They were not relationships.”

“They were assignments,” Vanessa said.

Detective Pierce opened a wall cabinet.

Inside were files documenting the women’s families, bank accounts, trusts, businesses, and relatives.

Adrian had studied each one before entering her life.

Vanessa found her file.

The first page had been created three years before their supposed first meeting.

He had known her habits, her charities, her travel schedule, and her closest friendships.

Beside Claire’s name, someone had written the word obstacle.

Beside Helena’s name was a different instruction.

Use Richard.

Vanessa continued reading.

The plan included stages.

Stage one: introduction.

Stage two: isolation.

Stage three: engagement.

Stage four: marital authorization.

Stage five: White Chapel.

The final page was missing.

A noise came from the bedroom.

Detective Pierce raised his weapon.

“Police. Come out with your hands visible.”

A woman stepped through the doorway.

Blonde hair.

Narrow eyes.

A scar near her chin.

The original Lena Vale.

She wore a hotel employee’s uniform beneath a dark coat.

She was the woman who had appeared outside the bridal suite.

“You ran from us,” Vanessa said.

“I ran from the officer beside you.”

“Pierce?”

“No. The younger one.”

Detective Pierce radioed his team and ordered the officer’s description checked.

Lena placed a phone on the table.

“I did not take your mother.”

“Then who did?”

“Helena left with the dark-haired Lena.”

Vanessa’s anger sharpened.

“Her name?”

“Dr. Mara Ellison.”

Claire recognized it.

“She was Richard’s forensic accountant.”

Lena nodded.

“Mara used my identity after Adrian destroyed her records. It was the only way she could move without being found.”

“Why would my mother leave with her?”

“Because Helena knew the second will was not in Cabinet 2147.”

“Where is it?”

“Inside the ballroom.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“The hotel ballroom?”

“Your father placed it beneath the foundation stone when the Vale Grand Hotel was rebuilt. He knew the board would eventually search his archives. He hid the real will where hundreds of people would stand above it without knowing.”

“Why hold the wedding there?”

“Because Adrian needed access to the foundation stone without attracting attention. The wedding allowed his people into every restricted area.”

The ceremony, the flowers, the musicians, and the hundreds of guests had hidden an excavation.

White Chapel was not merely a financial transfer.

It was a search.

“What does the second will contain?” Vanessa asked.

Lena’s face tightened.

“Proof that Richard did not own the Vale empire.”

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“Then who did?”

A video call appeared on Lena’s phone.

The caller was Adrian.

Detective Pierce attempted to trace it while Vanessa answered.

Adrian appeared in a dark corridor.

Behind him stood Helena.

Her hands were free, but her expression was tense.

“Mother?”

“I’m all right.”

Adrian smiled.

“She came willingly.”

“Let her go.”

“I will, when you return the brass key.”

“The cabinet is already open.”

“The key opens more than the cabinet.”

Helena shook her head.

“Do not bring it.”

Adrian moved closer to the camera.

“You have spent your entire life believing the Vale name belonged to you, Vanessa. Tonight, you are going to learn who it was stolen from.”

The camera turned.

Mara Ellison stood beside an open stone compartment beneath the hotel ballroom.

She was holding a sealed black folder.

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

“Unfortunately, she found the will before I did.”

Mara looked directly into the camera.

“Vanessa, come back to the hotel.”

“Why?”

“Because your father left instructions for the bride.”

A pounding sound came from Adrian’s side of the call.

Someone was trying to enter the underground room.

Mara looked over her shoulder.

Then she spoke quickly.

“Do not enter through the ballroom. Use the service tunnel beneath the kitchen.”

The screen went black.

From the apartment window, Vanessa could see police lights approaching.

Lena began collecting the passports.

“We have to leave before those officers enter.”

Detective Pierce turned toward her.

“They’re my team.”

Lena shook her head.

“No. Your team is still at the conservatory.”

The first police vehicle stopped outside.

May you like

The driver stepped out.

It was Adrian’s false officer from the bridal suite.
