THE BLACK WEDDING GIFT / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Voice Inside the Black Box

The woman’s voice came from the laptop just as police lights swept across the mirrors.

“My name is Lena Cole. Adrian Cross is still my husband.”

Vanessa Vale stopped breathing.

The bridal suite, which only minutes earlier had been filled with warm music, perfume, flowers, and nervous laughter, seemed to shrink around her. The chandelier lights trembled in the mirrors. White roses leaned from crystal vases. Pearls from her damaged wedding dress lay scattered across the carpet like tiny pieces of ice.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

For the first time since Vanessa had met him, the perfect calm had disappeared from his face.

His skin had turned pale. His eyes moved from the laptop to the open black gift box, then to the flash drive resting beside Vanessa’s hand.

Vanessa clutched the torn fabric at her waist.

“Why is your marriage certificate in my wedding gift?”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Claire forged it. Don’t believe her.”

Vanessa lifted the flash drive.

“Then why did you beg her not to play this?”

Her mother, Helena Vale, stood beside her holding a strip of torn lace. Helena was sixty-one, elegant even in shock, with silver-blonde hair pinned neatly above the collar of her dark blue gown.

“What else was on that drive?” she whispered.

Footsteps sounded outside.

Adrian took one step backward.

Then Lena’s recorded voice continued.

“If Vanessa is hearing this, Adrian failed to destroy the evidence. He will tell her Claire Mercer created everything. He will say I am unstable. He will say our marriage ended four years ago.”

Adrian lunged toward the laptop.

Vanessa moved first.

She slammed the screen closed and pulled it against her chest.

“Don’t touch it.”

“Vanessa, listen to me.”

“I listened to you for two years.”

“This is exactly what Claire wanted. She has been trying to destroy us since you removed her from the wedding.”

“You told me to remove her.”

“Because she was obsessed with you.”

The first police officer appeared in the doorway before Vanessa could answer. He wore a dark uniform and kept one hand near the radio on his shoulder.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

A second officer followed him. Behind them stood a tall man in a gray suit who introduced himself as Detective Rowan Pierce.

Adrian’s expression changed instantly.

The fear disappeared beneath a layer of controlled concern.

“Detective, thank God. Someone planted false documents in my fiancée’s bridal suite.”

“Fiancée?” Vanessa repeated.

Adrian ignored her.

Detective Pierce looked at the torn dress, the marriage certificate, and the open black box.

“Who called the police?”

“No one here,” Helena said.

The first uniformed officer stepped toward the laptop.

“We’ll need that as evidence.”

Vanessa tightened her hold on it.

Detective Pierce raised his hand.

“Not yet.”

The officer stopped.

For one strange second, the two men stared at each other.

Then Detective Pierce turned to Adrian.

“Mr. Cross, are you legally married to a woman named Lena Cole?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

“Were you ever married to her?”

Adrian hesitated.

“We separated years ago. The marriage was annulled.”

Detective Pierce picked up the certificate without touching the edges.

“This document was issued eight weeks ago.”

“It’s fake.”

“It has a verification seal.”

“Seals can be copied.”

The detective’s gaze dropped to Adrian’s left hand.

A pale line circled the skin beneath the place where Adrian’s wedding ring would soon have rested.

Vanessa had noticed that mark once, months earlier, while they were having breakfast in Rome.

Adrian had told her it came from a college ring.

She had believed him.

A muffled announcement sounded from the ballroom below. The orchestra had stopped playing. Hundreds of wedding guests were waiting for the bride.

Vanessa could imagine the scene. Her father’s former business partners. Members of the Vale Foundation board. Journalists invited by Adrian. Politicians, donors, investors, and relatives seated beneath golden lights.

Adrian had insisted on making the wedding public.

He had called it a celebration of their future.

Now Vanessa wondered whether it had been designed as a performance.

Detective Pierce spoke quietly.

“Mr. Cross, place your hands where I can see them.”

Adrian laughed once.

“You cannot detain me because of a wedding prank.”

“This is not about the certificate.”

The detective removed a folded document from his coat.

“We are investigating attempted fraud involving the Vale Heritage Trust.”

Vanessa looked at her mother.

Helena’s face had gone completely still.

“What fraud?” Vanessa asked.

Detective Pierce kept his eyes on Adrian.

“At four fifteen this afternoon, controlling authority over several Vale accounts is scheduled to transfer to a newly appointed marital trustee.”

“That’s impossible,” Vanessa said. “I never appointed anyone.”

“Your signature appears on the authorization.”

Adrian slowly moved toward the door.

The uniformed officer nearest him blocked the exit.

“Stay inside, sir.”

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“This is why I wanted you away from your mother’s lawyers. They’ve been manipulating you since your father died.”

Helena stepped forward.

“Do not speak about Richard.”

A sharp sound came from the laptop.

Although Vanessa had closed it, Lena’s recording was still playing through the speakers.

“There is something else Adrian will try to take,” Lena said. “Not money. Not the company. Something hidden inside the Vale family records.”

Vanessa opened the laptop again.

The screen showed Lena sitting in a dim room. Her dark hair was pulled behind her shoulders. She appeared tired but composed.

On the wall behind her was a faded green door.

“Adrian calls the operation White Chapel,” Lena continued. “The wedding gives him access. The marriage gives him a name. Vanessa’s signature gives him the key.”

The video suddenly distorted.

Lena leaned closer to the camera.

“Vanessa, the police at your door are not all there to save you.”

The uniformed officer beside the laptop reached for the flash drive.

Detective Pierce shouted.

“Step away from her.”

The officer pulled something from his sleeve.

The lights went out.

The bridal suite fell into darkness.

Vanessa heard her mother gasp.

Someone struck the table.

The laptop crashed to the floor.

A hand closed around Vanessa’s wrist.

She twisted away, feeling pearls break beneath her shoes.

When the emergency lights flickered on, Adrian was gone.

So was the uniformed officer.

The black box was empty.

And from behind the locked dressing-room door came three slow knocks.
