Chapter 7 - What Was Inside

The investigators entered through the courtyard doors.

Sabrina did not run.

She did something more revealing.

She reached toward the fire pit.

An officer stepped between her and the stone rim.

“Please remain where you are.”

“My phone is in there.”

Garrick stared at her.

“What phone?”

Sabrina’s face tightened.

Elena answered.

“The phone registered to Bluebonnet Residential Holdings.”

Several guests murmured.

Garrick looked from Elena to Clara.

“You set us up.”

“No,” Elena said. “I allowed you to reveal yourselves.”

Martin Cole presented Garrick with formal notice that every previous authorization, legitimate or forged, was revoked. He also informed him that Elena’s financial institutions had frozen all transfers connected to Bluebonnet.

Sabrina recovered enough composure to laugh.

“This is ridiculous. She dropped my bag into a fire because of a birthday cake. You all saw it. She is unstable.”

Victor stepped forward.

“The fire pit contains a concealed evidence tray. Your property was not destroyed.”

Sabrina’s confidence disappeared.

The officer retrieved the tray after the outer mechanism was safely closed. The handbag was warm and lightly marked by smoke, but intact.

Inside were the secondary phone, a hardware authentication device, copies of Elena’s identification, a forged power-of-attorney document, and a handwritten list of security questions.

There was also a small flash drive.

Sabrina stared at it.

Garrick did not seem to know it existed.

Elena noticed.

“What is on that drive?” she asked.

Sabrina said nothing.

The investigators cataloged each item.

The phone contained access to Bluebonnet’s accounts and messages between Sabrina and Garrick. It also contained conversations with another man named Nolan Pierce, a property developer.

Nolan had agreed to purchase Elena’s mansion through Bluebonnet for less than half its market value. Once control was obtained, Bluebonnet would transfer the property to one of Nolan’s companies. Garrick and Sabrina would receive a private payment after the sale.

But the flash drive revealed a second plan.

Sabrina had prepared documents removing Garrick from Bluebonnet immediately after the transfer.

She intended to keep the proceeds with Nolan.

The bag had not only contained evidence of a crime against Elena.

It contained proof that Sabrina planned to betray Garrick too.

When Victor explained this, Garrick turned slowly toward his wife.

“You were cutting me out?”

Sabrina’s voice became cold.

“You were useful because you were her son.”

“We agreed to split everything.”

“You couldn’t keep a consulting company alive. Why would I trust you with millions?”

The guests watched in stunned silence.

Garrick looked as though she had struck him.

Elena felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

For months, she had wondered whether Sabrina controlled her son or whether Garrick acted willingly. The messages answered that question.

Sabrina had encouraged him.

But Garrick had chosen every step.

He had photographed Elena’s identification. He had copied the office key. He had contacted the medical consultant. He had collected Bluebonnet’s mail.

He had known they intended to take his mother’s home.

Garrick looked toward Elena.

“Mom, I didn’t know about Nolan.”

“You knew about me.”

“I never wanted you hurt.”

“You tried to have me declared incapable.”

“Only temporarily. Sabrina said it was the fastest way to protect the property.”

“Protect it from whom?”

He could not answer.

Sabrina began blaming Garrick.

Garrick blamed Sabrina.

Each sentence exposed another detail.

The officer finally interrupted.

“You will both have an opportunity to make formal statements elsewhere.”

As Sabrina was escorted toward the house, she turned to Elena.

“You think you won because you kept an old house?”

Elena looked around the courtyard.

May you like

The ruined cake remained on the ground. Guests stood among overturned chairs and scattered candles. Her son was being questioned beside the flowers chosen for her birthday.

“No,” Elena said quietly. “I won because I finally stopped confusing surrender with love.”
