Chapter 5 - The Birthday Trap

Elena’s sixty-fifth birthday celebration had originally been Sabrina’s idea.

“A milestone like this should be unforgettable,” she said.

By then, Elena knew better than to assume kindness.

Still, she allowed Sabrina to plan the event.

It gave Garrick and Sabrina a deadline.

It also gave Elena an audience.

Clara initially objected.

“You do not need to expose them publicly.”

“They plan to portray me as confused and unstable. Witnesses matter.”

“So does your dignity.”

“My dignity does not depend on protecting their reputation.”

Victor approved of the plan, provided Elena followed strict instructions.

The bank would monitor her compromised account. Investigators would be present nearby. The mansion’s cameras would record the courtyard, office, and entryways. Elena’s attorney would prepare immediate revocations of every document Garrick might claim to possess.

Most importantly, Elena would not directly provoke an illegal act.

“We let them act,” Victor said. “We preserve the evidence, and then we stop the transaction.”

Elena disliked treating her own birthday like an operation.

But Garrick and Sabrina were already preparing.

A week before the party, Sabrina placed a cream folder beside Elena’s breakfast plate.

“It’s only an event-management agreement,” she said.

Elena read the first page.

The document granted Garrick authority over the mansion’s operating expenses and allowed him to negotiate with property consultants.

“I am not signing this.”

“You haven’t read it.”

“I read enough.”

Garrick entered the room.

“Mom, it’s for your convenience.”

“My convenience has become very important to both of you.”

“We’re trying to help.”

“You are trying to obtain authority you have not earned.”

Sabrina crossed her arms.

“This house is becoming impossible for you to manage.”

“The house is managed.”

“The staff barely listen to you.”

“They report to me.”

“For now,” Sabrina muttered.

Elena looked directly at her.

“Would you care to repeat that?”

Garrick stepped between them.

“Everyone is stressed.”

Elena pushed the folder back.

“My answer is no.”

That afternoon, Garrick called the medical consultant from the guest suite.

The conversation was recorded through a court-authorized financial fraud investigation arranged after Victor presented evidence to the bank and local authorities.

Garrick asked whether a family member could obtain emergency authority if an elderly person made an irrational public decision.

The consultant warned that one incident would not be enough.

Sabrina’s voice appeared in the background.

“Then we need more than one.”

Elena listened to the recording the following day.

Clara paused it before the end.

“You don’t have to hear everything.”

“Yes, I do.”

The rest was worse.

Sabrina suggested creating a scene at the birthday party. She would provoke Elena until Elena reacted. Guests would see an angry, unstable woman. Garrick would claim Elena had become dangerous.

Then they would present the false power-of-attorney document and begin transferring control.

Elena did not speak for several minutes.

“What scene?” she finally asked.

“They didn’t specify.”

Victor looked at his notes.

“They also discussed a transfer to Bluebonnet. Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”

“For what?”

“A deposit connected to the mansion sale.”

“They think they can sell my house with a forged document?”

“They only need enough temporary authority to create confusion. Once the money moves, recovering it becomes harder.”

Clara touched Elena’s arm.

“We can cancel the party.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“I spent months being treated like a guest in my own life. I will not hide from them in my own home.”

On the morning of the celebration, Elena dressed carefully.

She wore the white suit Richard had once said made her look like the woman who had frightened three bankers into funding their first restaurant.

Before leaving her bedroom, she placed his wedding ring on a chain beneath her blouse.

“I hope you would understand,” she whispered.

Downstairs, Sabrina was directing florists and criticizing the staff.

The three-tiered cake waited beneath the terrace.

Near the fire pit sat Sabrina’s cream handbag.

Elena noticed that Sabrina checked it repeatedly.

Victor had already discovered that the bag contained a secondary phone registered under a false name.

The device was linked to Bluebonnet’s banking access.

The bag was not merely an expensive accessory.

It was part of the crime.
