Chapter 22 - The Empty Chair

Martin obtained an emergency welfare review.

Nora was found physically safe, but isolated from her telephone, financial records and independent legal advice. She believed the center had been accused of stealing homes and that Clara had forged her case documents.

Matthew had shown her the news reports.

“He said I had embarrassed him,” Nora told Elena. “He said the facility would keep me safe until I stopped making accusations.”

“Did you agree to transfer your house?”

“No.”

Nora’s hearing was postponed while an independent advocate reviewed her documents.

Matthew denied working with Bluebonnet or Alder Crest.

Then investigators discovered that his debts had been purchased by Meridian Elder Services. The company promised to erase them after Nora’s property transfer became final.

The pattern matched the Mercer Succession pages.

Find the relative under pressure.

Offer rescue.

Turn gratitude into entitlement.

Nora remembered one more detail.

Before entering the facility, Matthew made a telephone call and said, “The second birthday is ready.”

Garrick recognized the phrase.

Sabrina had used it as the password hint for a hidden cloud folder.

Under the terms of his cooperation agreement, Garrick gave investigators every old account and device he had used. A recovered password opened the folder.

It contained recordings Sabrina had made to protect herself from Nolan.

In one video, Sabrina sat in a parked car with Celeste.

“Elena’s mansion is only the demonstration,” Celeste said. “Once control changes, the Mercer trust becomes vulnerable.”

“What does the trust own?” Sabrina asked.

“Voting authority in properties, charities and investment partnerships Richard connected during the old investigation.”

“I thought Elena controlled everything.”

“She controls what she can see.”

Celeste instructed Sabrina to create evidence of Elena’s incapacity. Garrick would receive temporary authority. A hidden clause would then activate inside a digital copy of the Mercer trust.

But the authority would not pass permanently to Garrick.

It would pass to an emergency protector named Evelyn Cross.

Clara searched the original trust documents.

No Evelyn Cross appeared.

Martin contacted the bank.

The bank confirmed that it possessed a sealed instruction signed by Richard many years earlier. The document named Evelyn Cross as a temporary protector if Elena and the named attorneys became unable to act.

The signature appeared genuine.

Elena looked at Victor.

“Who is Evelyn Cross?”

Victor’s face had lost its color.

“She was the witness Conrad Pierce could never find.”
