Chapter 20 - Clara’s Signature
A forensic examination confirmed that Clara’s digital certificate had been copied.
The breach occurred during the center’s anniversary fundraiser, when an outside technology company temporarily managed guest registration and donations.
That company had disappeared six weeks later.
Within days, anonymous documents were delivered to local reporters. They appeared to show Clara authorizing questionable property transfers while working for an organization that publicly opposed elder exploitation.
The story spread quickly.
Television crews gathered outside the Richard Mercer Center. Commentators asked whether Elena had created the organization to control victims’ estates. Online posts accused her of using her personal family scandal to raise money.
The center’s board held an emergency meeting.
Several members wanted Clara suspended and Elena removed from daily decisions until the investigation ended.
Elena agreed that independent attorneys should review every case.
She refused to disappear.
“Someone expects shame to make us silent,” she told the board. “That strategy worked twenty years ago. It will not work now.”
Garrick offered to speak publicly.
“I can explain how Sabrina and Nolan used shell companies,” he said. “People should understand that Clara’s signature could have been stolen the same way my identity was.”
Elena studied him.
“A public confession will not restore your reputation.”
“I know.”
“It may make your employment harder.”
“I know.”
“Then why do it?”
“Because silence helped me believe I was less responsible than I was.”
Elena did not give him permission or forgiveness.
She simply said, “Speak truthfully.”
Garrick’s interview changed part of the public conversation. He admitted attempting to exploit Elena and explained how forged documents, false medical concerns and family pressure could be combined.
He did not blame Sabrina.
He did not ask Elena to defend him.
For the first time, she saw him accept humiliation without turning it into resentment.
Meanwhile, Clara searched Mara’s old financial records.
She found monthly payments to a storage facility under the name Margaret Vale.
The payments had continued for nine years after Mara’s death.
Someone was maintaining the account.
The facility confirmed that unit 214 remained active.
The same number written on the receipt from Richard’s empty bank box.
Security records showed the monthly fee had been paid that morning.
In cash.
