Chapter 16 - The Empty Box

The bank opened Richard’s deposit box under court supervision.
Celeste had told the truth.
It was empty except for an old envelope containing a receipt from a storage company that no longer existed.
The receipt bore no customer name.
Only a handwritten number.
Clara examined the document under the bank’s fluorescent light.
“My mother never mentioned any storage facility.”
“Would Richard have trusted her?” Garrick asked.
Elena looked at him.
“Mara helped prepare our earliest contracts. She was one of the few people your father trusted without hesitation.”
Garrick had been permitted to join them because the fraudulent bank signature used his identity. His release officer remained present throughout the visit.
The bank had destroyed its security recordings years earlier, but archived identification records remained.
The visitor had presented a copy of Garrick’s driver’s license.
The photograph was genuine.
The signature was not.
Someone had obtained Garrick’s identification before Richard died and prepared to access the box immediately afterward.
Elena remembered the threats Victor described.
A photograph of Garrick leaving school.
A copied license years later.
Her son had been used as a key long before Sabrina met him.
That did not erase what Garrick had done to Elena.
But it changed the shape of the story.
Outside the bank, Garrick stopped beside her car.
“Dad knew someone was watching me.”
“Yes.”
“Did he think I was part of it?”
“I don’t know.”
“I spent years believing he didn’t trust me.”
Elena faced him.
“Your father may have hidden things from you. That does not make your choices someone else’s responsibility.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
He accepted the question quietly.
Before they separated, Garrick handed Clara his phone.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
You collected the wrong envelope. Stop helping your mother before she learns why Richard chose you.
Attached was an audio file.
Sabrina’s voice played through the speaker.
“If Elena finds the box, tell her the danger was never outside the mansion. Someone who still works for her gave us the access codes.”
The recording ended.
Elena thought of Teresa, the gardeners, the kitchen staff and the security company.
People who had remained after Garrick and Sabrina left.
People she trusted.
When she returned home, Teresa was waiting in Richard’s office.
On the desk lay a small black device covered in dust.
“I found it behind the old intercom panel,” Teresa said.
Victor examined the device.
It was a network transmitter designed to record conversations and send them to a remote server.
The manufacturing date was less than two years old.

Someone had installed it after Richard died.
Someone who knew the mansion well enough to hide it inside the one room Elena believed was secure.
