Chapter 1 - The Temporary Key

Three months before Elena’s sixty-fifth birthday, Garrick arrived at the mansion carrying two suitcases and a story about bad luck.
His technology consulting company had failed after losing its largest client. The lease on his downtown apartment had ended. His savings were tied up in a legal dispute that he insisted would be resolved within weeks.
Sabrina stood beside him beneath the courtyard archway, wearing oversized sunglasses and carrying a handbag Elena recognized from a magazine.
“We just need somewhere to breathe,” Garrick said. “A month at most.”
Elena should have asked more questions.
Instead, she looked at her son and remembered the boy who used to run barefoot around the same pool. She remembered him at nine years old, bringing injured birds into the kitchen. She remembered him at seventeen, pretending not to cry at his father’s funeral.
Elena opened her home.
The mansion was large enough that she barely noticed them during the first week. Garrick and Sabrina occupied the east guest suite. They ate breakfast late, went out most evenings, and spoke confidently about new investors and future opportunities.
Sabrina was attentive at first.
She brought Elena tea in the mornings and complimented her silver hair. She asked about Elena’s charitable foundation and listened to stories about the catering business Elena had built with her late husband, Richard.
“You created all of this from nothing,” Sabrina said one evening, gesturing toward the mansion. “Garrick is so lucky to have you.”
Elena smiled.
“I consider myself lucky to have him.”
Sabrina’s expression changed for less than a second.
Elena noticed, but she did not understand.
Two weeks after their arrival, Elena underwent a minor procedure on her left eye. The surgeon advised her not to drive or spend long periods looking at screens for several days.
Garrick offered to handle her household expenses.
“You shouldn’t be squinting at bank applications,” he said. “Let me take care of the bills until you recover.”
Elena hesitated.
She had always managed her own finances. Richard had trusted her with every contract, every payroll decision, and every property purchase. After his death, she continued without help.
But her vision was blurred, and Garrick seemed eager to be useful.
She gave him a temporary household card with a five-thousand-dollar limit.
“This is for groceries, repairs, staff expenses, and anything the house needs,” she said.
“Of course.”
She also allowed him access to a tablet containing the household payment application.
“The code expires in thirty days,” Elena warned.
Garrick kissed her forehead.
“You raised me better than to take advantage of you.”
Standing near the kitchen doorway, Sabrina smiled.
That same night, the first unauthorized purchase was made.
It was only two hundred and seventy dollars at an upscale restaurant.
When Elena noticed it several days later, Garrick said he had taken the household staff to dinner as a gesture of appreciation.
None of the staff had gone.
Elena did not learn that until much later.
The next charge was eight hundred dollars at a clothing boutique. Sabrina explained that she had purchased new table linens and planned to return the unsuitable colors.
No linens appeared, and no refund arrived.
Then came salon appointments, imported wine, luxury car rentals, jewelry repairs, and payments to a company Elena did not recognize.
Bluebonnet Residential Holdings.
Each transaction was small enough to avoid immediate attention.
Together, they formed a pattern.
One evening, Elena found Garrick in Richard’s old office, standing beside the locked cabinet where she kept property documents.
“What are you looking for?” she asked.
He turned quickly.
“A charger.”
“There are no chargers in that cabinet.”
Garrick laughed.
“Then I’m looking in the wrong place.”
He closed the office door behind him and changed the subject.
At dinner, Sabrina complained that the mansion required too much maintenance for a woman Elena’s age.
“You could sell this place for a fortune,” she said. “Move into a luxury community where everything is handled for you.”
“I like handling my own life.”
“Of course,” Sabrina replied. “For now.”
Elena placed her fork down.
Garrick immediately began talking about the weather.

That night, Elena changed the office lock.
The following morning, she discovered that someone had attempted to enter the wrong code six times.
